Although I wasn't around for WWII, I imagine it would have been uncomfortable for me being an Italian while the United States was fighting Facist Italy.

Likewise. There are six Muslims in my unit and I work closely with two of the six daily (married couple, actually) and we all get along just fine. The biggest arguments we've had are related to British soccer, of all things, because they are both staunch MAn U fans against the rest of us who are not.

Of course, as a general rule we don't talk about raising children, politics or religion, so that probably helps. The guide to etiquette - is it the Emily Post book? - has those three as big "do nots" anyway to avoid creating a scene anywhere, so they are quite possibly words to live by.

Throughout history, humanity seems to have had an innate need to hate someone simply for being who they are, through no fault of their own. I wish I could sympatize with you, but I cannot. I've never been in that position before. I've been despised for being gay, but I've never experienced hatred because of it.

Sadly, the acts of a few cast a general shadow over the rest for the sole reason that 'you look like them'. That's like saying, "I don't like broccoli, so I hate all vegetables."

Even more sadly is the fact that I can't think of a single thing that would help change things. No-one has found an answer in thousands of years. I don't expect anyone ever will.

Just know that not everybody hates you. I certainly don't. You've never given me a reason to.
