Record Obama Crowd, the Size of a City

By Matthew Mosk
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sen. Barack Obama has seen his share of large crowds over the last 15 months, but his campaign said they have not approached the numbers gathered along the waterfront here right now.

The campaign, citing figures from Duane Bray, battalion chief of Portland Fire & Rescue, estimated that 75,000 people are watching him speak.

The scene suggests this is not an exaggeration. The sea of heads stretches for half a mile along the grassy embankment, while others watch from kayaks and power boats bobbing on the Willamette River. More hug the rails of the steel bridge that stretches across the water and crowds are even watching from jetties on the opposite shore.

This article made me think... where's Hillary?

This is phenomenal! Go Oregon! I haven't seen CNN's reporting on this, but I've heard they haven't been showing the crowd at all. Is that true?

Just checked CNN and there was no news about this.

This article made me think... where's Hillary?
No it didn't. It made you think, "Look I can use this to stir trouble with the Hillary supporters instead of just posting it for the wow factor alone! Sweet!"

Okay, so the "sweet" may or may not have been part of your thought process, but I'm quite sure the rest was. It's sad that you're still trying to attack someone you're so sure is out of the race. What are you going to do after the convention?

^^^ Actually, there was a cable tv/broadband outage with Comcast this morning and evening which is why I didn't post this AM/early PM.

Asking what a candidate is doing now means "stirring shit up". If I would have asked where McCain was today, I doubt Chance would have taken it to heart.

A little defensive eh?

I knew you wouldn't have taken it personally. I guess it's something with the Hillary supporters being defensive.

Here in Arizona, they have McCain's every move tracked. I like the man... well the one before running for president.

He wasn't as slimey as his Republican buddies. Now he's catering to their small-mindedness for votes.

He hated Falwell. He ridiculed Bush's foreign policy non-stop. He worked on immigration reform with Senator Kennedy.

Now all of a sudden he's a traditional Republican.

McCain never ran on fear while serving as a senator to this state. Now, he's scaring older white people about Obama. What a turn-coat.

Truth, he was for talks with Iran. Now he's dead set against it.

That's rotten.

My advice to McCain---be YOURSELF. People will like you.

I think the the same thing happened with his last really big rally. So much for the Obama loving media.

I'm tired of CNN. But CNN beats Fox News. And MSNBC is too biased to the left that I can't consider them credible even though I like their favoring Obama.

Wolf Blitzer has a hard on for Clinton.

LOL, speaking of hard ons at CNN. Have you see that joker Lanny Davis on Larry King Live? He has his head so far up Hillary's ass he can tell you what she ate for lunch.

He's funny.

I'm not being defensive, Lost. I just can't understand why you can't create a thread about your boy without dragging Hillary into it. Are they joined at the hip or do you just have synaptic misfires and can't separate the two?

I didn't know it was 75,000, but I knew quite a number of people who were there. I didn't go -- I think rallies are boring, and it was too hot.

Anyway, the odd thing is that a lot (maybe most) of those 75,000 have already voted (as have I).

Both Clinton and Obama are still running ads out here, although I don't think Clinton has a chance at all. Bill and Chelsea Clinton were in the state today, too, but not in Portland; they were in Salem, Eugene, and Medford.

Actually Bill and Chelsea spent the morning in downtown Portland. They even ate at a restaurant not too far from Waterfront Park, where crowds were already gathering. I wonder what they thought LOL.

Really? I stand corrected. I guess I've got to stop using my roommates as news sources. :)

As far as Lanny Davis goes... I haven't been able to stand him since he started appearing on Sean Hannity's radio show years ago (this was back when he was just in the local New York market). Hannity dubbed him as the only liberal with sense, or something like that, and how they were good friends, and blah blah blah. David continually played the Alan Colmes role as the ineffectual, non-threatening liberal.

I normally don't post pics this large...

But I thought this occasion warranted a couple. Hope I didn't piss anybody off.

Also, from one Obama supporter to others: Don't be jerks, guys. Come on.

Thanks so much for uploading the pics, Lv99Slacker. Really amazing!!

LoL! I'm not familiar with him. I'll definitely hunt down a clip.

Edit: Just saw the other thread devoted to this!

Yes, the Clintons went to Mama Mia's in downtown Portland. The restaurant belongs to Lisa Schroeder. Cool lady, I've met her on more than one occasion.

An amazing crowd. I would have loved to have been there. I had a dream the other night that I shook Obama's hand.
