Braids — Native Speaker (Kanine)

This group of longtime pals from north of the border mix the angular with the inviting, creating pop tinged with delightfully odd moments, stunning experimental flourishes, and idiosyncratic vocals. It seems like they’ve been getting buzz forever, so it’s high time we got a chance to check out their debut album.

Early 2011 is all Sam has told the press. If you go to his website you can download the EP for the first [non-]single "Pink Cloud" (there's a kickin' [NSFW] B-side as well). It's getting mixed reations from people because it's an instrumental [both songs are really] and the video is very "artistic" (think Jean-Paul Goude's work with Grace Jones). The fusion of pop music and art kind of went out of style at the close of the 1980's. So I think a lot of young people don't quite know what to do with it. And honestly, people want to hear that voice and some have feared the new album will be all instrumentals. But Sam has said that will not be the case.

UPDATE: Daft Punk Not Connected to The Third Twin

Amysterious collection of electronic music released under the pseudonym The Third Twin was rumored to be connected to Daft Punk, after Spanish newspaper El Periódico Mediterráneo reported last week that the French duo would be playing the Arenal Sound Festival as their new alter ego in August. However, Daft Punk's management has released a statement that decries the report and denies any link between Daft Punk and the new tracks posted online.

"It has been brought to the attention of Daft Punk's management that the promoters for the Arenal Sound Festival in Spain have recently issued a press release in which they claim that a band called The Third Twin is 'directly connected' to Daft Punk," reads the statement. "This is completely untrue. Recent press reports are based on rumors instead of facts. Daft Punk is in no way associated with The Third Twin and the promoters for the Arenal Sound Festival are promoting the show under false pretenses."

The report stated that Daft Punk created The Third Twin moniker as a way to release a batch of material that Disney rejected when Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were tapped to create the score for "Tron: Legacy." Mitchell Leib, President of Music and Soundtracks for Walt Disney Pictures and Disney Music Group, tells Billboard.com that the notion that Disney turned down any music that Daft Punk composed for "Tron" is completely untrue.

"We never threw out any of their material, ever," says Leib. "I want to dispel any of the rumors about that material by that alias group being any derivative of our 'Tron' music, because it's not at all. There's nothing about that music that has anything to do with 'Tron' or any of the original conceptual music that was done."

The "Tron: Legacy" soundtrack, the latest batch of actual Daft Punk music, has sold 277,000 copies since its Dec. 7 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

On April 12, Minnesota slowcore pioneers Low will release their new album C'mon on Sub Pop. The 10-song LP is the trio's first since 2007's Drums and Guns, and they recorded it in the same studio in a former Catholic church in Duluth, Minnesota where they made 2002's Trust. Matt Beckley co-produced and mixed the record.

Talking about the album in a press release, frontman Alan Sparhawk says, "With the last couple of records, we were grappling with something outside of ourselves. This one feels more like, 'Well, forget that. I'm looking in your eyes right now, and we need to figure out how to get through the next moment, together, as human beings.'"

Low plan to tour the U.S., but the only dates announced at the moment are SXSW in March and a set opening for Explosions in the Sky at New York's Radio City Music Hall April 6.

Bjork 'halfway through' new album and planning tour

Bjork has said that she is halfway through finishing her new album - and hopes to play live before 2011 ends.

Speaking to Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið, the singer said work was well underway the follow-up to 2007’s 'Volta' and alluded to a tour plan for later in the year.

"Hopefully I will be able to be on tour in the fall," she said.

She also said she was wary of giving too many details about the album away, adding: "I have had some bad experiences with a number of things before. I'm very superstitious. I go into the studio with a plan to go do what I have in mind, and then the idea is half dead."

The singer revealed one of her new songs is inspired by experiences she'd had after attending a conference organised by National Geographic magazine.

"I saw 100 talks and met eccentric people who had been in Africa for four years with lions and insects," she said. "Then one night after drinking whiskey with them I began to hear stories. This is one of the collaborations I can talk about."

Awesome, I love Low!

I'm still not even sure what to think of the last couple Bjork albums. I look forward to the tour though. I hope she comes my way.

It's been three years since Andy Butler joined forces with Antony Hegarty for Hercules and Love Affair's debut single Blind, the best slice of melancholy disco since pretty much anything Vince Clarke turned his hand to. Skip forward to 2011 and the New York band are back with their second album, Blue Songs, but this time with a few new recruits. Butler's still at the helm, but fan-turned-frontman Shaun Wright and Venezuelan singer Aerea Negrot now lead the vocals on standout tracks such as My House and Painted Eyes. And while Hegarty is missing, H&LA stalwart Kim Ann Foxman remains.

Speaking to Rosie Swash for the Guardian's Music Weekly podcast, Butler explained that the titular theme refers to the "blue period" of his adolescence, before music made him realise there were other people just like him out there. Perhaps this unashamedly emotional celebration of dance music, and all the strength and vulnerability it represents, may have the same effect on Hercules fans going through the same thing right now.

Macy Gray Aiming to Release Two Albums in 2011

Macy Gray isn't wasting any time getting to work on a follow-up to her 2010 album "The Sellout" -- and she plans to spend a lot more time working on new music in the future.

"I want to make a lot of records this year," Gray, who's had gaps of three and four years between her last three albums, tells Billboard.com. "I actually want to put out two records this year. I want to do a jazz record. I want to do a rock record. I have so much music in me, I'm kind of doing myself a disservice by not putting it out as fast as it comes."
