On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

We should be panicking. We're not getting the whole story from Xi Pooh. But look at the economic damage; they've shutdown half of China, are building giant contagion hospitals in like 2 weeks, nearly all major airlines aren't flying to China. Trump cannot be trusted to deal with this hitting America. It's gonna be a blood bath.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

2-Feb-2020: Today's stats:

2019-nCoV stats:
Cases reported: 14,628 - about 98% of the reported cases are in China (up from 14.551 yesterday)
Deaths: 305 (up from 304 yesterday)

For comparison - the WHO estimates that a typical flu season kills about 389,000 people worldwide.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

If there is any good news, it may be that the increase over 24 hours has been relatively small?

And mortality rate actually lower than in the early days, so hopefully that means that treatment is more effective.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

3-Feb-2020:

2019-nCoV stats:
Cases reported: 17,391 - about 98% of the reported cases are in China (up from 14,628 yesterday)
Cases reported in the US - 11 (up from 10 yesterday)
Deaths: 361 (up from 305 yesterday)

For comparison - in 2002-2003, SARS had 8,000 reported cases and 774 deaths.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

The gay community didn't take AIDS seriously, either.
At least, not in 1981, when it was first announced.

It took until 1983 for many people to realize it was serious. Even, then, many people (in San Francisco and in the gay community in general) thought a cure would be found within a year or two. They were still not taking it seriously. I remember warning my friends - who were still going to the baths - "You have GOT to stop. This is going to come back on you." They scoffed at me. Every last one of them is dead. ALL.OF.THEM. I still miss my friends. I thought we'd grow old together.

32,000,000 deaths later...

Draw your own conclusions. The ignorant always sneer first. Until it happens to them.

that is hardly a fair analogy - they DID watch ALL their friends drop dead just like I watched all mine - they were not "ignorant" - they were terrified to death - most thought it was already to late and yet afraid to get tested because of the bias and hate - the easier path was just to intoxicate yourself and live in oblivion for a few months until it was your turn then to put your friends and family through the ordeal - after all you would be dead in a few months and then the truth could be brushed under the rug....

2800+ new cases in a day not good....I suspect that the number of deaths by the time this is suppressed will far outstrip SARS.

Canada is looking to repatriate people from Wuhan, but will quarantine them at a military base for at least two weeks when they arrive home.

I wonder if doubters are starting to take this more seriously now....

What's more concerning is an article I read from public health officials in Hong Kong who believe that the Chinese have under-reported the numbers. Apparently there was a delay in Chinese healthcare facilities being able to test for the virus. So, many of the "colds" that were seen may have been 2019-nCoV but were not tested. And because of the load on the Chinese healthcare system, they're only testing people who have pneumonia- which is estimated to be about 20% of the total cases.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I had read a report that that there could be as many as 90,000 cases and that was from over a week ago...but without credible sources and given the hyper-secrecy of the Middle Kingdom.....I had just passed it over.

Today I see though that a doctor who had warned of a massive outbreak before it happened...thinking he was seeing an outbreak of SARS...was pulled into the police station and forced to sign a letter of criticism for 'disrupting social order' as a fearmonger. And of course, he now also has tested positive and will be out of action.

With over 45 million people quarantined in China and other countries...........we now have to hope that people respect the need to not break rules and interact with others outside their households.

It's been a mixed bag.

On one hand, China has been more open with 2019-nCoV than they were with SARS in 2002.

On the other hand since 2002, they have centralized power to the point that the local health authorities were paralyzed and fearful. They didn't acknowledge that there was an outbreak until 31-December. The central government declared an emergency around 22-January.

China's central bank just put $173 billion into the economy which gives you an idea about what they are anticipating.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I just was listening to a report on the radio that if this goes on for 2 more weeks that it could become a global economic meltdown - they were citing things like "there will be a 100,000 million people in quarantined within 2 more weeks" and that companies like Nike don't just manufacture wares in China - but that about 50% of merch produced is sold in China - they are already expecting 4,000 Walmarts to temporarily close and 10,000 Starbucks - and depending on how long it takes to rebound it could lead to mass global economic destruction.... the US stock market has already dropped over a 1000 points since the epidemic started - 600 points just last Friday - this could get real scary.....

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I'm reading of the possible economic meltdown that is a very real possibility. Should I start to worry now?

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Meanwhile my coworker was talking about how some lady with a face mask at the post office freaked her out & I kindly explained that was the most responsible thing a sick person could do. However, Jill with the fucking flu, has been coughing & sneezing throughout the damn office for days after we told her ass to stay home. Now, 4 people are out with the flu. I hope this virus doesn’t really hit America because these nasty fucks would be too concerned with insignificant reasons not to take proper precautions like washing their nasty ass hands. Hell, when I’m at the gym I wash my hands before & after I piss.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I have a feeling that the situation is already far worse than we are being told.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Well fuck.

CNN has a story on their website today about how the Chinese government is micro-managing information about the epidemic and what happens when someone talks without government approval.

This Chinese doctor tried to save lives, but was silenced. Now he has coronavirus [CNN]
On December 30, Li Wenliang dropped a bombshell in his medical school alumni group on the popular Chinese messaging app WeChat: seven patients from a local seafood market had been diagnosed with a SARS-like illness and quarantined in his hospital.

Li explained that, according to a test he had seen, the illness was a coronavirus -- a large family of viruses that includes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)...

Soon after he posted the message, Li was accused of rumor-mongering by the Wuhan police. He was one of several medics targeted by police for trying to blow the whistle on the deadly virus in the early weeks of the outbreak. The virus has since claimed at least 425 lives and sickened more than 20,000 people globally -- including Li...

On January 3, Li was called to a local police station and reprimanded for "spreading rumors online" and "severely disrupting social order" over the message he sent in the chat group.

You mentioned something else that is another misconception about infection control.

During the SARS epidemic, it became fashionable for people in China to wear surgical face masks. That fashion trend has continued for the past 18 years and you'll see people on the street and in public places wearing colorful face masks.

Those face masks are paper or cloth. They are designed to keep germs and spit from the person's mouth from being exhaled. They are to protect the patient from the person wearing the mask, not the other way around. They offer little protection to the person wearing the mask. That person at the post office might have had a cold or the flu and ideally, she should have been at home resting. If she was wearing the mask thinking that it would protect her from contracting a cold or the flu, she was probably wasting her time.

The actual masks that healthcare workers wear for protection are N95 masks that are much heavier and are designed to completely cover the nose and mouth. They're also hot and uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.
