Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Update...The Rochester, NY St. Patrick's Day Parade was cancelled!

https://www.rochesterfirst.com/around-town/status-of-rochesters-st-patricks-day-parade/

I heard on the news this morning that Rochester has its first reported case...the first in WNY. As of today, the St Patrick's Day Parade in Buffalo is still on. I'll be going to a Parade on Saturday, but won't be going to any bars. In the past they've been so overly crowded that it's just not worth taking the risk.

Damn it! They've now cancelled both parades here! :shamrock

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

And yet another close call... this time one of the Mar-A-Lago guests from this weekend...

Bolsonaro aide tests positive for coronavirus days after Trump meeting [Axios]
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's press secretary tested positive for coronavirus days after taking part in meetings with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo reports and multiple American outlets have confirmed.

The latest: Bolsonaro is currently being monitored, according to Brazilian media. Fabio Wajngarten, the aide, was photographed with Trump on Saturday.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that he's "not concerned" about Wajngarten's diagnosis.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) both said they will enter self-quarantine after being at Mar-a-Lago with the Brazilian delegation last weekend.

A far-right populist, Bolsonaro had dismissed the alarm around the virus as a "fantasy" spread by the media as recently as Wednesday.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

My local school district has closed effective immediately. On their website, they say they were notified this afternoon of a local case. However, I can find no reference AT ALL on the County or State information channels, including the running total on the Denver media outlets. Hmmmm...........

In other news, the State of Colorado opened ONE drive-up testing facility on Wednesday. On Thursday, the line was so long they turned cars away. The whole thing is a little unclear, I'll direct you to a news link instead...

Seems that Spain shares with the US the highest R0, 1.9 to 5.6 for Spain, 1.9 to 5.9 for the US.

Cases reported in the US - 1,701 cases (up from 1,323 yesterday), 40 deaths

The number of cases and deaths almost doubled in Spain overnight. Germany's cases went up 50%.

Global coronavirus cases in major countries:
  • Italy - 15,113 cases (up from 12,462 yesterday) - 1,016 deaths.
  • Iran - 11,364 cases (last reported 10,075 cases) - 514 deaths
  • South Korea - 7,869 cases (no reported change from 7,869 cases yesterday) - 66 deaths (South Korea has tested over 230,000 people)
  • Spain - 4,073 (up from 2,277 cases yesterday) - 92 deaths
  • Germany - 3,059 cases (up from 2,078 cases yesterday), 6 deaths
  • France - 2,882 cases (up from 2,284 cases yesterday), 61 deaths
  • UK - 593 cases (up from 459 cases yesterday), 8 deaths
  • Australia - 128 cases (up from 128 cases yesterday), 3 deaths
  • Canada - 152 cases (up from 117 yesterday), 3 deaths

United States: now in 43 states and the District of Columbia
  • Spain, with one of the fastest-growing outbreaks in the world, has declared a state of emergency, allowing the government to restrict movements and ration goods.
  • An Australian official who recently met with Attorney General William P. Barr and Ivanka Trump has tested positive.
  • With expanded testing, there is more evidence that many people who are infected with the virus are asymptomatic and unaware they are infected. Of the 3,700 passengers on the Diamond Princess, over 700 people tested positive. Most of the people who tested positive (>50%) were asymptomatic and unaware they were infected. Seven passengers from the Diamond Princess have died.
  • The FDA has approved the first commercially developed COVID-19 test. Roche Molecular Systems received approval to begin distributing the test. This is not a point of care (bedside) test, so it will require a specimen be collected and sent to a commercial lab for processing.

Since China is the 1st country to have COVID19
why is China excluded or not mentioned here ??:confused: it looks crazy to me :?

Because China blocks access to JUB, so we don't have enough Chinese members to be worth mentioning here.

China considers the disease so much under control up there:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china/

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...onavirus-crisis-escalating-outside-China.html

that the Chinese have started sending material for relief in Europe.

On Thursday only 70000 people of an inland town in the Barcelona province were asked to remain confined... on Saturday, it may be the whole 7.5 million in the Catalonia region...

Does that add up?

Not to be overlooked and probably a subject for the CE&P thread... the Chinese are sending doctors and medical supplies to European countries hit hard by the virus.

America is blaming Europe and stopping travel to/from Europe.

Americans have short memories. The rest of the world doesn't.

Cases reported in the US - 2,174 cases (up from 1,701 yesterday), 47 deaths (the US has tested only 19,000 out of a population of 330 million people)

Cases in Spain and Italy are still increasing after social isolation measures were instituted. This indicates that mass transmissions occurred before social isolation measures were implemented and the number of daily cases has still not reached its peak.

Cases in Europe have increased across the board. Increases were seen in countries around the Baltic sea.

Global coronavirus cases in major countries:
  • Italy - 17,660 cases (up from 15,113 yesterday) - 1,268 deaths.
  • Iran - 12,729 cases (last reported 11,364 cases) - 611 deaths

  • Australia - 200 cases (up from 128 cases yesterday), 3 deaths
  • Canada - 193 cases (up from 152 yesterday), 1 deaths

United States: now in 46 states and the District of Columbia
  • New York state has 325 cases and has implemented mass testing programs. Washington state has 457 cases. Massachusetts has 108 cases.
  • Many television shows with live audiences have stopped production. A few night-time talk shows continued production and were putting staff and employees in the audience. Theme parks have closed. Sporting events are either canceled or are being conducted without an audience. The Boston Marathon is postponed to Fall.
  • Churches, mosques and synagogues in several States and the District of Columbia have canceled in-person church services.
  • Runs on staple goods continue at supermarkets and big box retailers.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The governor in Ohio asked that all meetings of 100 or more people be cancelled. I was looking forward to the Cleveland International Film Festival starting on March 25th and running for 12 days. Over 100,000 people attend during the 12 days including people from out of town and out of the country. They put out a brochure of over 200 pages giving information on the over 200 films they were going to be showing. I spent hours reading most of the 200 pages and picked out 47 films I might be interested in and narrowed it to 29 and then to 21 films. I even created a spread sheet to help determine conflicts of time between different movies. Thad1527 was coming for a weekend and we were going to see some films and maybe the Cleveland Indians and a neighbor and I were going to see some films. Needless to say we are all disappointed. Besides that most theater shows and museums are closed. Of course all sporting events are cancelled as well. Churches are exempt from this but the Catholic Church said that we don't have to go to church on Sundays during this crisis. I am not too worried about contracting the virus, but it sure is affecting my life. I am also worried about some elderly relatives and relatives with weak immune systems.

Dewine deserves credit because he got the big picture.

Because we're not testing, most of the carriers of the virus don't know they're infected. Ohio has multiple urban areas, so by taking aggressive action now, he's avoiding the mistakes made in Seattle, Boston and NYC.

Fortunately, most elderly people don't go into crowds or mass gatherings with the exception of trips to grocery stores and church services.

You can do them a big favor by running errands for them and buying their groceries. And washing your hands and encouraging them to do the same.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Question for someone who might know. From the time you are exposed to coronavirus, how long is it before the test will return a positive result? An hour? A day? A week? It seems like testing too early would return a false negative. During that time, before symptoms develop, are you contagious to others?

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

^ From two weeks to over one month: hence the two-week confinement policy.

Honestly, we don't know. We've had cases where people were asymptomatic but when tested, they had the virus in their nose or throat, so we don't know when they were exposed. On the other side of that, some of the cruise ship cases were negative for several days while in quarantine and them showed positive after several days of being "isolated".

Add to this that it takes 1-3 days to get the test results back. There's no "point of care" test that gives immediate results like we have for influenza and HIV.

^ From two weeks to over one month: hence the two-week confinement policy.
That's more related to the incubation period. Because it may take up to two weeks to show symptoms of an infection, they are trying to decrease social contact for a couple of weeks to slow the spread of the virus and "flatten out" the peak of the number of cases. Spain is really on the upswing of the curve, so most of their cases were transmitted in early March and are just now showing symptoms.

If someone actually tests positive for the virus, they're supposed to stay in isolation until they have two negative tests conducted on separate days.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I have a 102 year old aunt who is living in assisted living and they have the building in lock down. No visitors are allowed. Just before it went into lock down, and not knowing it was going to, I had delivered a Burger King breakfast sandwich and a couple of jigsaw puzzles to her. I'm glad that I did. It gives her something to do during the lock down. She says that they feed them skinny food there so once or twice a week I take her a breakfast sandwich and some desert pastry. I also have a cousin who had cancer treatment and, although the cancer is in remission right now, she has a weakened immune system. I am worried about both of them. My brothers and sisters and cousins and I are all in our 60's and 70's, but mostly in good health.

That's right, but even now it's very confusing to get definite information, because nobody seems to quite know about how the virus works and the disease flows, so that incubation periods, symptoms, latency... seem quite mingled in the reports. Then, like in everything with their due exceptional cases, there seemingly are people who do not show any symptom, or very light ones, after being infected, and in China up to 80% of the infected did not need any special treatment.

However, I found some pretty definite info about how long can survive the SARS-CoV-2 in different surfaces... It can remain active floating in the air up to three hours, on plastics during 16 hours at half its contagiousness power, with remaining traces up to three days; on copper up to four hours; on steel, at 50% of contagiouness power, after thirteen hours, with traces remaining up to two days; on cardboard its capacity remains after 24 hours, even at half its capacity...
