Was at sams club today. I got the last pack of toilet paper. There were people coming up to me asking if there was anymore? I had to tell them I got the last pack.

Never thought I would see sams club so empty. All I wanted to get was some chicken. All gone. Milk? All gone. Most things were gone. Cursed are those who panic bought all that stuff.

Sunday I walked around Walmart, SEEKING-OUT empty shelves...and looking at the tags to see what had been there. Some surprises, like seeing all the rice gone. I knew the toilet paper would all be gone (but, about that, WTF?? - I mean, do people need 14-month supplies?). But also some surprises like seeing a still-robust supply of diapers and feminine napkins, and no trouble at all getting soup. Ibuprofen shelves were empty, but I picked up some Friday when I could...just in case.

Test kits are only now STARTING to be deployed well, so the USA numbers don't tell the whole story. There are some people, who have recovered, who will NEVER know that they had it - unless routine blood tests, at some point, begin to include blood numbers for COVID-19 antibodies.

He forgot to mention that 68,000 of the resolved cases are the people in China who got sick between Dec and Feb. There's 127,000 known cases, 81,000 of which are in China.

Some people are saying that they were acutely ill for 2-3 days and their cough lasted for 2-6 week afterward.

The point is that yes, while the vast majority will recover just fine(though some who have recovered have shown 20-30% reduced lung function)but if we don't impose serious restrictions for public socializing, some will get very seriously ill and overwhelm hospitals and we have critical shortages of life saving ventilators and other vital medical equipment. People with mild or no symptoms can make others critically ill... better we manage the illness in a way that will protect at large and deal with inconeniences in the short run than we let it get out of control and the damage is just that much more expansive.

What DOESN'T make sense is the panic buying... milk lasts only so long and you really need toilet paper for a year or two? The grocery stores WON'T close unless the pandemic truly got severe it would be reckless to keep anything open but for absolute emergencies. You don't need to get everything at once, just keep well stocked for a couple of week intervals.

The greed and the selfishness are frankly surprising, but the virus isn't. It's not doing nearly the damage that the bad citizens are.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves as a society, why is it worth saving?

Maybe this pandemic is a gift horse. Maybe the society coming apart at the seams is overdue.

Why, for example, is the death rate in Italy ten times as high as in their neighbor Switzerland? Could it be a difference in the preparedness of the hospitals, having the proper equipment (ventilators, ICU, etc.) that actually can help in treatment of some of the SYMPTOMS (though nothing helps with the disease itself)?

Another solution to champion is voluntary self-quarantining of those at risk.

I'm doing that, though there's no evidence I've had exposure. I am less than three weeks into my "busy quarter" (which actually floats somewhere around the earlier part of the year, with no regard to arbitrary calendar months). This has me hunkered-down for 13 to 15 weeks every year. I get more than 80% of my income for the entire year during that period, though I'm assuming that results this year will be 25% to 40% below normal.

The timing of this year's cycle - which I run entirely from my home office - is fortunate. Actually, it's UNCOMFORTABLY LATE for me, uncharacteristically so, but I even just found out that I got a "break" that taxes to IRS won't be due until July 14 in lieu of the usual April 15...I was sure that the lateness of this year's cycle for me meant I'd have to file a hated extension, but of course the quarterly estimate will still be true, and probably the State return (which I probably WILL file an extension on).

Everybody, stay safe. I know that many of you cannot self-quarantine. Just lucky that I can, and I drive so I don't have to use the trains.

Italy's high mortality (nearing 10% of cases) has two direct causes: 1) They didn't act quickly enough and 2) the population in northern Italy is disproportionately skewed toward older people. I made a comment in an earlier post that about 50% of the coronavirus cases in Italian ICUs are people under the age of 60. That's because a large number of the Italians over 60 years of age never survived long enough to make it to the ICU.

Another factor that is also at play has to do with the Italian lifestyle where they spend a lot of time in social gatherings. There was many an evening in Europe where I spent 3 or more hours before and after supper socializing in a restaurant where the tables are much closer together than they typically are in the US.

We're probably going to find some other factors such as genetic susceptibility that are factors but we're not at the point that we understand enough about coronaviruses quite yet.

• At least 2 ED doctors in the US are in intensive care with COVID-19. States in the northeast reported that they had early 1,000 healthcare workers in quarantine. Planning has begun to redeploy doctors from specialties such as internal medicine to emergency rooms. Discussions are ongoing about whether to activate the US Medical Reserve Corps.
