According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as the Tokyo and Japanese governments, participating athletes and officials will not need to be vaccinated. The IOC, however, is still encouraging countries that do wish to vaccinate their athletes to lead by example.

Probably the American athletes are okay because it's likely that they received the mRNA vaccines. What we're finding out is that exposure to someone who is infected does cause a positive COVID-19 test in a vaccinated person, even though they may be asymptomatic.

What we're about to find out the hard way is whether these asymptomatic vaccinated people are infectious. There's not enough studies to know for sure.

India's Pandemic Death Toll Estimated At About 4 Million: 10 Times The Official Count [NPR]

How many people have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began?

The official global total as of this week: 4.1 million.

But everyone agrees the true toll is far greater. A study released on Tuesday looks at how much of a disparity there may be in India, one of the epicenters of the pandemic.

The analysis, from the Center for Global Development, a think tank in Washington, D.C., looks at the number of "excess deaths" that occurred in India between January 2020 and June 2021 – in other words, how many more people died during that period than during a similar period of time in 2019 or other recent years.

Drawing death data from civil registries and other sources, the report came up with three estimates for undercounts. The conclusion is that between 3.4 and 4.7 million more people died in that pandemic period than would have been predicted. That's up to 10 times higher than the Indian government's official death toll of 414,482.

I can't even guess on what the final number will be or when we'll actually know how many millions of people died in India. From the acquaintances I have who have family in India, they are all saying that they know of someone who died- often an extended family member.

Don't be surprised if Brazil and the US also make revisions, too.

A week ago, the Missouri governor was asked by public health officials to begin planning for a field hospital to reduce pressure on hospitals in southwestern Missouri. Hospitals on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri line are under pressure with COVID-19 patients flooding their emergency room and filling up inpatient beds.

A week later, the governor is still "kind of" thinking about it.

Hell as usual, with the highest rates of spreading and newly infected, and approaching critical rates of hospitalization, but who cares: over half the population is immunized, and the current vaccination pace is finally catching up with the rate in the USA, that you all seem to find so disappointing.
