On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

I think this should be played on every screen forever! especially in MAGA world.

The idiots talked about there are mild compared to some of what's being said on right-wing sites. As a comment on some of those sites, it doesn't matter what the actual topic is, there are idiots who manage to twist it so they can talk about "evil Bi-den" and his "fascist vaccines".

Not surprising for Mississippi. Yet the story never mentions how covid infects the placenta. https://www.justusboys.com/forum/th...-2)/page63?p=11955564&viewfull=1#post11955564
Other than that post, why am I still hearing absolutely nothing about this? It seems like it would be considered a *VERY* big deal.

Oh, maybe the publicity would create a whole new group of "COVID-chaser" women in the red states, who have become pregnant and who want to get an abortion, with all other such options disappearing.

If I were not so old and retired, I'd attempt to move to Canada. But from what I've read, you can't just permanently retire in Canada unless you have a bazillion dollars, and even that I'm not sure about.
cityboy, I actually DID look at that intently in 2014 to 2016, and what I saw were definitely hurdles that were impossible. My Canadian options are very limited, for one thing, because virtually that entire nation lies above my "DO NOT CROSS!" line for winter living. Not much more than southern Ontario (perhaps to Hamilton at its northernmost) and the Vancouver/"Lower Mainland" and southern Vancouver Island in BC, would be acceptable to me.

Even if there were no immigration penalties, you'd need a bazillion dollars just to move to Greater Vancouver. It's hella expensive there. The logistics involved in such an extreme distance (from, at the time, western Illinois) were discouraging, let alone the customs hassle of importing TONS AND TONS AND TONS (literally) of vintage vinyl. The duty would be killer for sure.

ONTARIO had crazy penalties - when I checked those few years ago, you had to LOAN a few million dollars (OK, Canadian dollars...but, still) to show "good faith," I guess, which they would GIVE BACK TO YOU AFTER FIVE YEARS. I think residency also requires creating three full-time jobs or something. There's not even the illusion of any of this being possible in the most remote and exotic of circumstances.

The other option was a work visa, meaning I would be required to work FOREVER UNTIL I DROP DEAD, or risk (after the first two-year interval) being kicked out. Unacceptable in all ways.

So, yes, you're correct. When I quit my government job in 1978, I could have so easily moved to Canada, but I didn't. I'm not sure that the border conversation would have been much more intense than this:

CUSTOMS: What's the purpose of your visit to Canada?

USA guy: Oh, I'd like to move to Hamilton.

CUSTOMS: Are you carrying any firearms? Do you have access to funds that will support you for six months? Do you have a valid driver's license?

USA guy: Yes, I do. I have $1,320 cash with me, and I have three credit cards with unused credit lines over $17,000. [*shows no documentation at all, except ID/driver's license*]

CUSTOMS: OK, go ahead. They're hiring in the Hamilton area. Good luck.

By the time that I left the government, though, I already had two or three tons of vinyl records that would have had to go through Customs and Immigration. Less than a year earlier, a friend in New Jersey was going to move there (Niagara Peninsula), and he was taking about one-fourth as many records across with him, and Customs wanted to charge him $30,000 duty.

In that situation, I may as well have been trying to move to the Moon at that time.

Ivermectin: How false science created a Covid 'miracle' drug

The BBC can reveal that more than a third of 26 major trials of the drug for use on Covid have serious errors or signs of potential fraud. None of the rest show convincing evidence of ivermectin's effectiveness.

....not surprising. But depressing.

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-58170809

And of course, the hard core believers who rely on these 'studies' to prove it works will just say that this is all part of the global deep state plot to conceal the truth.

I guess all of these people never watched the movie, "Contagion"?

The 2011 film Contagion is even more relevant in 2020, and not just because of coronavirus [Vox]
Contagion argues that bad information is at least as contagious as the virus itself

Alan Krumwiede is a kind of character who still felt a little fantastical, as I recall, in 2011. He’s a blogger, a conspiracy theorist, a “freelance journalist” in the mold of Alex Jones, with 12 million devoted fans and a penchant for the spotlight. To his audience, Krumwiede peddles various theories about the virus, such as the idea that it’s been genetically engineered. He goes on national television to accuse CDC director Dr. Ellis Cheever (Fishburne) and the entire government apparatus of conspiring with Big Pharma to suppress a simple homeopathic cure, called forsythia, in order to profit off a vaccine.

I don't know why the BBC is only now reporting news which has been out there for almost three months. Mallen Baker dealt with this more thoroughly in his regular News Roundup on 16 July (you only need to watch the first 6 mins 30 secs).

The earlier video he refers to is out of date but still interesting because it explains how two meta-analyses which review the same studies can come up with contradictory conclusions:

Side note: YouTube uses Artificial Stupidity to stop Mallen Baker's videos from appearing in recommendations. They go out at 7pm UK time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Talking about unreliable studies, remember the story about smokers being less likely to get covid19? It came up in this thread in July 2020. Here's an article from February this year which picks apart the studies that gave rise to it:

In this article, we shed light on the process that resulted in the misinterpretation of observational research by scientists and the media. We also point out the methodological flaws of various studies on which hasty conclusions were based.

But here's a quite recent report about Japanese research which seems to show that there is some truth in it: Drugs that mimic effects of cigarette smoke reduce SARS-CoV-2's ability to enter cells. MedicalXpress is written by scientists for scientists. I understood the title and a few other bits. They give a helpful graphic for lay readers but it isn't all that helpful.

Has this been in the news? I haven't seen it. Maybe they're worried that it will encourage ex-smokers to go back on the fags.

Another in a series of sobering statistics from 2020-2021:

More than 120,000 US kids had caregivers die during pandemic [AP]
During 15 months of the nearly 19-month COVID-19 pandemic, more than 120,000 U.S. children lost a parent or grandparent who was a primary provider of financial support and care, the study found. Another 22,000 children experienced the death of a secondary caregiver — for example, a grandparent who provided housing but not a child’s other basic needs.

In many instances, surviving parents or other relatives remained to provide for these children. But the researchers used the term “orphanhood” in their study as they attempted to estimate how many children’s lives were upended.

Anything to own the libs I guess.....

In just the incredibly small slice of deaths that have been posted in the Karma thread, you can see that the lives of so many children are being destroyed because of the ignorance of one or too often both parents.

And it seems that for too many families, a Gofundme is the only backstop they seem to have.

Not to do a crossover promo, but I'm about to post a karma story that is another orphaned children story... with a twist.

your thoughts?
''Singapore gov who stubbornly refuse to use the more effective China vaccines,
while mistakenly believing in Moderna and Pfizer,
resulted in huge explosion of virus cases and deaths in Singapore as Moderna and Pfizer turn out to be non effective''

''Hungary ,one of the rare european countries using China vaccines, has a dramtic drop in cases of covid 19 virus ,and has completely got situation under control as seen at graph at''

I read that the CDC is telling those who got the Moderna vaccine that with both shots the protection is still as strong as from Pfizer with the booster.

That doesn't mean anything.
Facts and data counts.

The situation in Hungary is, and has been, exactly the same as that of the rest of Western countries, with the exception that they let the virus spread more freely, with comparatively no restrictions.

Hungary, with a population slightly smaller than Belgium, which is the poster child of covid disastrous management in Europe, has had even more deaths, as the data you linked us to very well show.

Besides, the current tendency is now set on an increase in the number of cases (as might be the case for Europe in the next few weeks) https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/hungary/ while still having a rate almost double than, say, Spain (74 against 46) https://x-y.es/covid19/hungria.pais which has bet mainly on Pfizer, Moderna and AZ.

So much for your Sino-Hungarian success story.

The problem with Singapore is that, like Australia or New Zealand, they had remained virtually covid-free, and NOW they have been invaded by the most infectious Delta variant that ravaged most of the Westen world during the past months.

There has hardly been any success story with this virus anywhere in the world and, as the date both you and I have linked to, Hungary is far from being one of them.

The difference between countries like Hungary and those like Singapore is that, while the former do not care much about the virus destroying a country in which there is, comparatively, not THAT much to destroy and, most importantly, with people not that stressed about death and economic chaos around them, in Singapore their whole social and economic machinery is wrecked by a single spot of dust.

That's that.

Just when I think you couldn't seem any dimmer....

How the frak do you think they reached that conclusion if not by "facts and data"?!?

Canadian officials are saying the same thing.

I was double-jabbed with Moderna. I don't need a booster.

And that's a FACT.
