Washington State just published an analysis of COVID-19 cases in vaccinated vs unvaccinated people. They looked at relative risk in different age categories.

Summary:

Unvaccinated 12-34 year-olds in Washington are:
  • 5 times more likely to get COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 12-34 year-olds.
  • 23 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 12-34 year-olds.

Unvaccinated 35-64 year-olds are:
  • 5 times more likely to get COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 35-64 year-olds.
  • 17 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 35-64 year-olds.

Unvaccinated 65+ year-olds are:
  • 6 times more likely to get COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 65+ year-olds.
  • 11 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 65+ year-olds.
  • 13 times more likely to die of COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 65+ year-olds.

These numbers were before boosters and before omicron became predominant, but it puts clear numbers behind the anecdotal reports coming from emergency rooms and inpatient hospitals that the two-dose vaccination routine results in lowered risk of COVID-19 infection but significant lowered risk of acute illness and death.

It think we may already have known this.

It seems that the O variant is around 80% less susceptible of making you enter the hospital but, once you are there with it, you are as screwed as with the other variants...

As for vaccination, yesterday I happened, for once, watch live Spanish TV, and they were saying that Israel are preparing for a fourth booster, when only barely above 60% of the population there have two doses...

Oh, and restrictions again, facemasks in the street, curfew in Catalonia... O unchained...

...As for vaccination, yesterday I happened, for once, watch live Spanish TV, and they were saying that Israel are preparing for a fourth booster...
The planned fourth booster will be for healthcare workers and high risk patients.

One of the problems with those groups is they were targeted early for vaccination starting in Dec, 2020 which means they received their second dose in Jan-Mar of 2021 and their booster in the July-September, 2021. This will probably time out that they get a fourth booster 6 months after their last booster.

Given what is happening with Omicron and that about 4 in 10 of the people testing positive in Israel has had at last 2 doses, I won't be surprised if they expand the booster program to allow people over age 16 to receive a fourth shot in 2022.

...when only barely above 60% of the population there have two doses...
There's three reasons for that 60%:
  • Israel allowed a religious exemption. The ultraorthodox Jewish population of the country is known to vaccine-resistant.
  • Israel insists on a foolish position that they aren't responsible for immunizing Arab residents of Israel unless they work in the Jewish territories. This creates a second large population of unvaccinated people living in Israel.
  • Israel has one of the highest birthrates in the middle east and at 3 children per female resident, it's one of the highest birthrates of first world countries. The result is that about 1/3 of the residents of Israel is under age 18. Israel started immunizing children under age 16 later in 2021, so even though children age 12 and older are eligible for the booster, not many children are 6 months out from their second dose. When 33% of the population is under age 18, it's going to be hard to get above 70% until the Pfizer shot is approved for the 2-4 age group.

For all its efforts to avoid the high death rates in the US and Russia, Israel allows a large population in its borders to not be vaccinated while Russian and American tourists visit Israel.

And in the not-so-good-news department:

Omicron overpowers key COVID antibody treatments in early tests [Nature]
Doctors use artificial versions of natural antibodies to stave off severe COVID-19 in high-risk people who are infected with the coronavirus. But a slew of publications posted on preprint servers report laboratory evidence that Omicron is totally or partially resistant to all currently available treatments based on these monoclonal antibodies. The publications have not yet been peer reviewed, but some of the companies that manufacture antibody therapies already concede that their products have lower potency against Omicron than against other variants.

Monoclonal antibody treatments were used in acute illness in emergency rooms in order to lower the incidence of admission, primarily in unvaccinated and immunocompromised patients.

The US government stockpiled monoclonal antibody treatments from three manufacturers - GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Lilly and Regeneron. Research is showing that two of the three - Lilly and Regeneron are not as effective against omicron compared to earlier variants.

The somewhat good news is that early research is showing that Omicron, while more contagious than Delta variant, is somewhat less likely to result in acute illness and hospitalization.

I have close family members who will not get vaccinated, in spite of my pleading and attempts to reason with them. Even though they are young, I fear that it may end in tragedy. I am angry, upset, and frustrated. Perhaps if they don't care, I should not care, but I do. My last attempt to persuade them to get vaccinated was met with the response to "mind my own business".

I feel for you. It is hard to care about an individual and ask them to do right thing for themselves and those around them, but they refuse. It is especially hard when their reasons are so invalid and false. We have a couple of family members who are excluded from Christmas this year because they won't get vaccinated. Yeah, it's your choice to get the shots. It's also your choice to accept and bear the consequences of the that choice. One of those consequences, is being un-invited to Christmas. I hope another consequence isn't a cematary. Peace and Merry Christmas.

Happy Christmas to all. Stay safe and well. The restrictions here are less severe than last year, but I think its much quieter than last Christmas. Families are not gathering for Christmas dinner together, and pubs are basically deserted.

Well Tennessee...the deception was sure to be uncovered.

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/587069-tennessee-raises-covid-19-death-toll-by-thousands

COVID deaths are likely close to 10 times the numbers that were reported.

The other sources I've seen say that the new figure is ten percent higher than before, not ten times higher. They also attribute the difference to sloppy/lazy reporting by local authorities, not to any state-level deception. In fact reading your source I find the same thing: "Officials in Tennessee have increased the state's COVID-19 death toll by about 2,700 to 20,644 after a review".

My buddy isn't on the road because first one part of his family all [!] got COVID, and had to cancel, then the ones who were to be hosts to everyone had two cases out of four people, so he's not driving his mom to meet them and the ones who would have been flying in from back east were left in the lurch (I had to explain to his mom that they can cancel their tickets and get a refund -- but do it quickly!).

We've actually got snow for Christmas, the first time in at least twenty-five years, which has made it extra quiet outside.

And none of the usual restaurants with special Christmas dinners are operating.
