50 Most Loathsome People of 2008

You constantly refer to me as a Koolaid drinker

This drives me crazy. First of all, it's spelled Kool-Aid, and second, the phrase is a misnomer, because in Jonestown they actually drank Flavor Aid, a different product. Marion Barry unfairly maligned Kool-Aid when he said that, but then he's not exactly a good guy.

As for the list, please note that it's a countdown. They consider Barack Obama the 50th most loathsome person in the US in 2008. While I certainly disagree, I don't think Sarah Palin is #1 either. While she's certainly a scumbag, a liar, and an idiot, I think several people out-loathsomed her this past year. If I were Der Kommissar and in charge of The Wall, she wouldn't be first against it, or even in the first 10.

This is political humor, but I'm beginning to wish I'd marked it On Topic. Marley and NickCole, do you have to use every thread you disagree on as an excuse to carry on your mutual vendetta? Why don't you snarl at each other by PM? Are you trying to impress us? It doesn't impress anyone any more. And do NOT start telling me "He started it." I'm not listening.

I'd be much more impressed by intelligent commentary about the nasty, meanspirited (when it's about people we like) and/or brilliant, insightful (when it's about people we hate) writing in this piece.

Just a question but how come the 50 most loathsome people of 2008 all appear to be residing in the U.S.A or did the original question only relate to that country?.

By the way, I voted for Hillary in the primary. I thought she hung on too long, but I was wrong. Because she did, she kept the media focus on the Democrats, and the GOP didn't have a shot at catching up.

Downside of the GOP's winner-take-all primaries: the candidate is anointed early, and in some environments (like the one that prevailed in 2008) this is a huge disadvantage.

Of course, neither Hillary nor Barack really considers homosexuals human beings. Human beings, when they're also adults, have the right to marry whom they choose (when the choice is mutual). All the candidates for both parties opposed same-sex marriage. So I was conscious of choosing between evils. I chose Hillary because I really wanted her to get a shot at being President, and I knew Obama would get his eventually...whereas she'll be too old in 2016.

Yeah, the actual title is "THE BEAST 50 MOST LOATHSOME PEOPLE IN AMERICA, 2008." Where 'America' is used in the conventional sense of "the USA."

Otherwise...well, without being at all controversial, I think we can all agree that Robert Mugabe would be high on the list. In fact I'm hard pressed to think of anyone else whose immediate death would improve the lives of so many so quickly.

Seriously. Is there any Republican left who's not a sexual hypocrite??

Yeah, they are. They are actually called Moderate Republicans. Surprisely, they seem to like me to have conversations with non-partisan folks like me as on key issues. Though most of the issues are stuff that are more local that does affect the national Republican platform...

The really need to form a new party. True conservatives don't have a party any more. The Democrats are conservative by any reasonable standard, but won't admit it, and a few of them are actually liberal. The Republican Party has become a stinking midden where true conservatives suffocate in the effluvia of right-wing ideologues, as I've said before. Even if that stopped being true, its reputation for thugocracy (e.g. the past eight years) will not be so easy to get rid of.

I suggest that the true conservatives walk out and join the Libertarians.

The Libertarian party isn't really conservative either. They want to overthrow the structures that make society possible, in favor of some imaginary Randian paradise. Most of them wouldn't last 20 minutes in that kind of world.

There are Libertarians who have realized that the Libertarian party isn't what they want, though. There's one blog in particular that's consistently thoughtful: Unqualified Offerings. But forming a party is a lot of work; it's going to take people more willing to be organized, and take orders in the process, than the typical Libertarian is willing to be.

So maybe they should form the Liberty Party, and absorb the Libertarians who are tired of not getting anything done.

Libertarians are really just Goldwater conservatives.

What's wrong with that? I've still got my Goldwater tie clip.
