A Gay Teen kills himself after being outed on the internet!

I imagine police and prosecutors are assembling a timeline, trying to establish if Tyler had any other contacts. they are probably asking them not to talk the media.

a case against the roommate and friend, beyond invasion of privacy, will be difficult to prove. It wasn't like they were taunting him on a cliff - even his last posts on this site show anger, but not despair.

and, even on this site, there seem to be no shortage of guys willing to call this KID unbalanced, stupid, crazy, etc....So if you can't find complete compassion for this MISGUIDED KID on a gay message board, then what will you find on a jury?

Remember there are jerks everywhere. But also, look at the post counts on some of those people. At least a few of them are brand new and have come here just to say those things.

One other thing: jurors are vetted for prejudice against groups containing the defendants and victims. So in this case the defense will bounce anyone with a prejudice against Asians (South or East), and the prosecution (if they have any brains at all) will bounce all homophobes.

I wish Tyler had read this posting.

You may or may not have heard about the NJ college student who killed himself last week because his room-mate had posted videotape of him having sex with another guy. A terrible, senseless tragedy.

My mommy job requires that I remind you of two essential things:
One:
Nothing ruins your life forever. NOTHING.
Two:
Nothing ruins your life forever. NOTHING.

If that young man had only waited a couple of weeks nobody would have cared- he'd have gotten past it. People have short memories- life would have gotten better, much better. His parents and friends? They loved him prior to the tape- they would have loved him afterward too. A few awkward moments and then life goes on.

That's always the thing about the very young and these situations. They often don't have the life experience or perspective to see how much bigger their lives can be.

That's why I like the It Gets Better project.

When will there finally be class actions against schools?

Hopefully all the posters on this thread have gone to the Shepard Foundation site and taken a few moments to donate $100.00 to be matched by the JUB site owners.

If not. Please do. Make Matthew's and Tyler's pain count for something.

Help fight back against hatred and homophobia.

When I first read about Tyler's suicide I was amazed how badly I felt about someone I did'nt know. People described him as being shy, and a loner. I went back and read his older posts. What a funny, smart, thoughtful young man he seemed to be. It made him more than just a news story.
What a loss he and the other kid's are.

This is really sad. I remember when I read it first time. Well, in my country there are plenty of reasons to be suicidal cause of gargantuan homophobic society. I had problems when I was 17 y.o. (5 years ago) and I wrote a blog about it. I didn't try to kill myself but I was blackmailed and attacked with a gun. Take a look:

I originally posted this in it's own thread, but I think it really belongs here. The Time letter is in response to the cover story on bullying. The link is to another religious type making up, at best, inane theologies:

"This was an enlightening and desperately sad article, but I believe it overlooked one major factor. As long as the churches, the putative moral leaders of the community, preach that homosexuality and homosexuals themselves are sinners or intrinsically disordered and their love making, acts of grave depravity, there is little schools can do to stop such bullying."

And so it continues (with the explanation more heinous than the sin):

Two students accused in Tyler Clementi case withdraw from Rutgers

By KEN SERRANO and RICK MALWITZ • STAFF WRITERS • October 28, 2010

"Two Rutgers students charged with invasion of privacy for the alleged use of a webcam to broadcast an intimate encounter between fellow Freshmen Tyler Clementi and another man days before Clementi's suicide have withdrawn from the university, an attorney for one of the students said.

Steven Altman of New Brunswick, the attorney for Dharun Ravi, Clementi's roommate, said the withdrawals of Ravi of Plainsboro and his co-defendant Molly Wei of Princeton, both 18, mean neither face university disciplinary hearings.

"They were given the option of withdrawing and they can reapply,'' Altman said. "Realistically, they couldn't go back no matter what. He definitely plans to go somewhere else.''

Altman said both students withdrew earlier this month, but he did not have an exact date.

He was unable to comment on what Ravi has been doing since removing himself from school.

Withdrawal was raised as a possibility by university officials during phone conversations in early October, Altman said.

In the wake of Clementi's suicide, people within and outside the university called for Ravi and Wei's immediate expulsion. Neither student was suspended, Altman said.

E.J. Miranda, spokesman for the university, declined to discuss Ravi and Wei, citing federal privacy laws. Wei's attorney, Rubin Sinins of Newark, did not return messages left Thursday. Sinins previously released a statement saying the first-year pharmacy student was innocent.

"Molly committed no crime. Her remarkable reputation is being unjustly tarnished by uninformed and incorrect assumptions,'' that statement read.

After learning that the images were posted, Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22. The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said it is investigating the possibility of bias crime charges against Ravi and Wei. The investigation is continuing, said Jim O'Neill, spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office.

Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, the largest gay rights group in New Jersey, has called for hate-crime charges against Wei and Ravi.

"If Rutgers asked Mr. Ravi and Ms. Wei to withdraw, that seems like an entirely appropriate request,'' he said.

On Wednesday night, however, a group of about two dozen students community held a rally at Brower Commons on College Avenue criticizing what a spokesperson called "a rush to judgment'' in the swift condemnation of Ravi and Wei.

"There were people calling for them to be expelled. There were people who wanted manslaughter charges,'' said Lauren Felton, a senior from Warren. "A lot of the details are not known yet.''

"While we do not condone the actions that Ravi and Wei are alleged to have taken, neither can we stand aside and watch the Rutgers community lay the entire blame on two 18-year-olds,'' according to a statement by the group "Queering the Air'' that organized the rally.

The group also condemned comments made on several websites that mentioned the two students' Asian background and posted messages that urged the two to "return to their countries,'' according to Felton.

"We are against the crucifixion of two individuals for the sins of the larger society,'' said Robert O'Brien, an anthropology instructor and one of the leaders of Queering the Air.

According to Felton, the group, and other organizations on campus that represent gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, have "re-claimed'' the word queer, once considered an offensive slur.

Among the chants led by O'Brien Wednesday night were, "Queer liberation. Human liberation. It's all one struggle.''

In a press release, the group condemned Garden State Equality, an advocacy group that demanded Ravi and Wei be charged with hate crimes and receive "the maximum possible sentence.''

Goldstein, the director of Garden State Equality, the largest advocacy organization in the state for gays and lesbians, called Queering the Air a "radical fringe group.''

"They stand with (Ravi and Wei). We stand with Tyler Clementi,'' said Goldstein
While the students chanted on one side of College Avenue, three self-described "street preachers'' preached loudly to students waiting at the bus stop in front of the gymnasium.

"You say you were born homosexuals, you need to be born again,'' said Robert Parker of Old Bridge. "Education without salvation is damnation.'' Parker later went across the street and preached similar messages while members of Queering the Air continued to chant."

I hope Ravi can't get into college anywhere.

As for Wei, there's a LOT of doubt about her involvement, which I hope will be resolved soon. Until it is, though, I really think it's unjust to condemn her.

I remember posting this poor guy an encouraging message at the time of his post.
For what it is worth it is really hitting all the news channels in the UK.
I dont know what else to say as all of my fellow jubbers have said it all so beutifully RIP buddy (group)*wave*:mad:

So I just saw an article that said he was a member here?! Omg.

I feel so bad for him. In the posts I've read by him here he didn't seem as upset about it although it's hard to gauge from just seeing words. I can relate to his story a lot, because even though I'm in the closet still...I still sort of imagine that if I'm ever found out that I suicide would be a possibility. Idk. =/ I wish he would have just waited some time longer but I can see how overwhelming something like that would be and not knowing how to deal with it.

The post where he said he was going crazy looking for other hidden cams in the room makes me particularly sad. No-one should ever have to feel that scared to be in their own room...

I wonder what the guy he was inviting over thinks about all this though.

Now I feel awful. If only had posted in that thread. Maybe I could have saved a life!

Unlikely. If you read that thread, you'll notice he got lots of good advice, and didn't seem particularly depressed. It was a shock to everyone.

Good. I hope he's acquitted of the harassment charges and convicted of the witness tampering and obstruction charges, and goes to jail for 35 years.

(I don't actually hope he's acquitted of the harassment charges. It would just serve him right to go to jail for the coverup alone.)

On one hand I'm thrilled that this kid may be punished for his bullying actions that caused Clementi to take his own life. On the other I feel sorry for the kid who never intended for this to be more than a practical joke (albeit a malicious one) who managed to ruin several lives including his own.
