  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

A Gay Teen kills himself after being outed on the internet!

Society is to blame.

Lets say a male and a female having sex and the webcam is secretly turn on.
Is there going to be a suicide for this ??

There could be Telstra, but for different reasons.

I agree with you about the society part though.

please note that despite the names that are quoted there, JUB has no contact to or relationship with gawker.

That is what I thought but I thought I would point it out. The author seems sympathetic but you never know what kind of attention that will bring here.

Absolutely appalling. I saw the story in my local newspaper (which I believe is just taken from the NYT), and was going to post about it myself.

What seems to me to be particularly terrible, is that tragedies like this still happen, and young folk, hopeless and despairing, feel they have nobody to turn to. This is really a matter which deserves strong political action, but what pollie, I wonder, will have the guts to stand up against the conservative fundies?

Heartbreaking and unfortunate. My condolences goes out to his family.

I yearn for the day where being homosexual does not grant possible risk of suicide.

I've been torn up about this ever since I read about it on Yahoo news last night. I read the articles on Gawker and several other news reports and the original thread here on JUB.

The news reports say, if convicted, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei could get five years. The gay rights group Garden State Equality is trying to get the incident recognized as a hate crime. If so, the penalty will be more severe. Let's hope they succeed.

The original memorial page on Facebook has been deleted, and another one has been posted. I went there to look at it, and it's completely ruined with hate posts as well as a lot of hateful photos. Is there any way to report the abusers there?

I hate that you have to sign up for an account just to look.

Those photos were disgusting, and tasteless. I reported them, but I'm sure Facebook will just close the group down all together.

To report individuals, click on the 'flag' underneath their comment. You will be asked to select for which reason, and FB does opt for 'target based on orientation.'

As long as the U.S. and other countries don't properly teach about data protection and privacy (just watch Youtube...) and adapt the laws, this will continue.

R.I.P. cit2mo :( Too bad he wasn't able to take a step back from this and see it from a different perspective.
What other perspective? If you're out for mockery on the worldwide internet, you will be stigmatized for your whole life. There's no other option.

Interesting that many comments on the Gawker article are blaming the victim, which is fascist propaganda.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Why don't you help changing privacy laws instead?

it's completely ruined with hate posts as well as a lot of hateful photos.
Probably Encycl0p3dia Dram4tica, 4chan, Something Awful, Ebaumsworld etc.

But you U.S. people allow them to mock his death. You don't want to change your privacy/satire laws

Change your laws instead of praying.

Just learned about this today and it's tragic. That poor fellow.

Wow.....................

It brought me to tears seeing the hate pictures some people posted on the FB page. Here a young kid takes his own life and the haters cheer! I figured as much, but didn't want to post it earlier. We mourn, and others relish in the victory of one less faggot in the world. That's ALL they care about.

I am so disgusted to be identified as part of the human race. It makes me sick. I just want to leave the planet.

Btw, the story made the morning news here in LA. A good story, 10 minutes..... not just a quick blurb.

It's so sad that this happend.

This is why we need to ban together and start fighting each other so we can make it better for ourselves and the people out there who are scared and confused. Then we can mostly stop things like this happening.

It's tough to read someones emotional state from just text, I'm not the first on here to say that he had sounded like he was taking steps with Rutgers to fix this. He sounded pissed off, not suicidal.

I wish his family and friends my sincere condolences.

I just learned about this via my routine click on "New Posts". I, like others here, saw the original posts by cit2mo and did nothing. So often it's hard to reply to those posts without having enough information, at least by my standards. I'm pretty cautious. I now wonder if it's better to say something rather than trying to be sure of saying just the right thing.

It's not possible to point to the "worst part" of this horrible and sad event - the tragedy itself, the loss to others, the family's suffering, etc - but what comes to mind is the fact that there is little unique about this. I came out over 30 years ago and while I don't know the statistics, I know this kind of tragedy has been happening all along.

At the risk of repeating something here, I'll post the link to Metta's post with information on the Trevor Project, an organization focused on preventing these tragedies.
