  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

A Gay Teen kills himself after being outed on the internet!

I now wonder if it's better to say something rather than trying to be sure of saying just the right thing.

I don't think anything any one of us could have said would have changed the outcome. As has been mentioned often in this thread, he sounded well-grounded and in control. Something changed and we may never know what it was that prompted him to end his life.

I read the thread and I though of it immediately when I heard of the Rutgers case. I never got the connection until I read about it on Towleroad this afternoon. This all just makes me sick. I wish that someone could have intervened.

R.I.P.

I remember reading that thread...when I heard this story last night I immediately thought of it, but didn't put two and two together till I just watched the Early Show clip and they showed the thread from JUB...

this has got to stop.

When i heard this story this morning - i got this sick feeling - i had made a minor comment to cit2mo on that thread. The feeling was - I hope it wasn't that same person i was communicating with. Then i dawned on me - what difference does it make if it were the same person or some other one in similar circumstances? (unless there was some hint at what he had planned, and i had a chance of stopping him).

I don't know if i'm allowed to post links. Just looking for information on this story, i came across a blog by Forbes that cites this website and that thread:

The original memorial page on Facebook has been deleted, and another one has been posted. I went there to look at it, and it's completely ruined with hate posts as well as a lot of hateful photos. Is there any way to report the abusers there?

Here's the link:

I think its just a bit difficult to get to as there seems to be a couple. This is the link I used http://www.facebook.com/pages/In-Honor-of-Tyler-Clementi/153517964681258

How horrible. I read the story this morning and automatically thought of the earlier thread. And I just posted the other day because I wanted to know what the latest update was. May you find peace.

And I agree with the other posters, there was nothing that anyone could have done. From reading the thread, it did seem everything was alright with him. It seemed like he had taken action and was working on the next steps. We don't know the full story about what happened.

in the comments of the article, someone posted a link to a post that he also made on Yahoo:

This shit has to stop! The invasion of privacy we all have suffered in the past 20 years is stark and ridiculous! I'm sick to death of money grubbing assholes winning the fight over privacy. Frankly, I don't care if you made a tape knowingly or unknowingly. But it is your image and your body, and so the second you decide you no longer want your image on the 'net you should have the right to have immediate compliance with it being removed!

Europe is so much more advanced than the US in protecting privacy rights, which is tragic. The US allows companies to sell your info and data willy nilly to anyone and everyone. Even the medical HIPAA law is a joke that essentially informs you that you have no privacy, nor right to expect privacy.

As far as the topic at hand I don't care if the kid was closeted or out, or in between. It's his body being shown! He should have the right to dictate when and where it can be shown, or not shown at all! Why should a foolish decision to allow someone who promised to keep a video private to "tape" a sexual encounter at age 20 mean one has to keep dealing with repercussions from it for the next 40 years in his professional / work life? That's unfair and frankly, Unamerican!

It is too late now, but I wish people would not have posted the link to the cam site. I'm concerned that his family and friends will see that and I'm sure that he would not have wanted his family to remember him for that, even though there is nothing wrong with that. It was posted in his own thread and I don't think it adds any important information to this. I find it to be a little disrespectful.

Gesh...now I see that gawker posted it as well. :(

Good point, and thanks. I had forgotten most of the details of that thread. One reply won't matter much, but collectively... hard to say. Just something to consider when deciding if I should reply to a post.

Re: Gay Teen Kills Himself After Unknowingly Being Internet Broadcasted Having Sex

We have the sad news to break also that he's a JUBber. He was called cit2mo.

He discussed his problem on the forums earlier, and the steps he took with his university. It has been closed and moved into the Moderators area, as it could be use as evidence in the criminal prosecution of the two accused.

I send my deepest condolences to his close family and friends, and hope that JUBbers here will join with me and make this thread about remembrance, and not to speculate on the circumstances about his suspected death.

Thanks Star-Warrior,
You are one well grounded person, and I am glad for what you do here on JUB.
That this man was one of us a JUBber does not miss a point. It saddens me as one who took Mathew Shepard's name for my Username, that when others decided to out us or do other unspeakable acts against it, it leaves at times a terrible trail of brokenness.

I join with you and all my fellow JUBbers in sending condolences to his family and friends as they grieve. Finally, I hope justice is pursued and the persons, or for now believed to be two persons who took the video and posted it on the WEB are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

It is another sad piece of evidence, that many in this world are tormented about what to make of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual. It is so sad, but it causes hope to rise anew that things will continue to get better.

For what it is worth, my own experience seems to indicate that fifty, forty, thirty or even twenty years ago, this story would have been buried or not even reported and we would never have known. I for one like to know what has happened. Let it get better!
Shep+:cry::(

I used to post on JUB years & years ago, but eventually life intervened and I stopped. When I tried to log in today, I had to re-register, so I imagine my account was deleted (and understandably so) after the long period of inactivity.

I've been following very closely the stories in the news this week about Tyler, and the other three teenaged boys (one of whom was from the same town where my ex-boyfriend grew up) who've taken their lives recently due to harassment and humiliation, and when I read in one of the articles today that Tyler was a member of JUB, it spurred me to come back here.

Four bright, talented, beautiful boys gone from this world because of the cruelty of others. My heart breaks for the families of each of these young men, and they have my deepest sympathies.

New MSN article also talks about him being on JUB.

I can't believe the maximum sentence for those two criminals are only 5 years. They should be locked for at least 10 years. Of course, they're probably going to be doing about 100 hours of community service as punishment.

Disgusting.

Most of the major media are now covering it - and we've even had it reported over here in the UK. This coverage is going to be around for the next couple of days I feel, and JUB will also be under scrutiny and see extra traffic coming to the site.

The one good thing that could come of this is that other people in a similar position discover that there is a site 'out there' called JUB that offers a sense of community to those who have none, and a wealth of support and advice for those that need it.

We may not be able to prevent further tragedies such as Tyler's, but we can at least try and show young people that it DOES get better, they CAN be stronger, and NO-ONE is really on their own.

I am interested to know if there are any memorial or funeral plans. I would like to send my condolences and bring a bouquet of flowers.

A

How could you just see Clementi as a "gay kid"? It'd be horrible if it happened to anyone.

This is a truly tragic event and I hope the cyberbullies get their full sentence of 5 years in jail.

They went too far with this prank.
