A Poll About Adding A New JUB Forum

Which forum would you most like to see added to JUB?? (if any)

I voted 'all of the above.'
Other??: Books [literature, current issues, groundbreakers]

But especially Science and Travel.

I would have voted for Science too but really like the food idea. I picked up a recipe a few months ago on HT that Mom wanted. Food threads keep coming up but I can never find them a few days later.

Oldermen and Travel are also nice.

I'd like the Science forum too. I'm applying to grad schools in two years and I'd like some tips on the application process.

i had to choose Travel. I like traveling and always prefer staying somewhere clothing optional - like the Island House in Key West. Would really like to be able to find out where others go, what the experience was (good or bad), and what prices are like.

I personally would like to see a Career forum: a place where those of us in the same profession can go and discuss ideas, etc. It would also be an opportunity:

(1) to network;

(2) to be a great resource for those thinking of changing careers;

(3) to find out the most gay-friendly employers.

I think it would be an invaluable resource for gay and bisexual men that is not already available on the internet (at least I haven't found one).

Having just read DutchECK's post perhaps any new science forum should be set up in the "no flame zone" to encourage serious discussion. Anybody seriously interested in science should be able to discuss it without flaming others.

Definitely!
Although the rules for no-flame need to be strengthened. At the moment it's just fine to drop into the religion forum and say, "The Bible and Quran are hogwash and believing in them is primitive and foolish", in the middle of a thread on any topic at all. It would be nice to not have to put up with posts on the order of, "Science is crap only nerds without a life get into" in the middle of wrestling with the importance of getting out into the asteroids to bring back metals so we don't have to screw up the environment here, or why Al Gore gaining weight is actually a benefit for the global warming problem.

As it is, I don't visit the other forums (besides Hot Topics) as often as I probably should. I'm afraid if interesting topics in science and so forth get segregated there, I would miss them completely. And Hot Topics would get even fluffier than it is already.

I like the way the no-flame zone works for the Coming Out forum, but I can't think of a lot of other stuff that belongs there. Androgyny, maybe, if people want that. Especially if you could think of a name for it that would include the guys at the other end of the spectrum.

I avoid Hot Topics like the plague, unless someone points me there, so I don't think I've ever seen a science thread on the board. Give us a separate forum, and I'd go there to look without having to wade through all the silliness in Hot Topics!

As for no-flame, the Religion forum lately isn't a lot different from the CE & P -- anything goes, pretty much, as long as it isn't a personal attack. So there might not be much point in making Science (& technology) no-flame... though if it really was no-flame, it would be nice.

I went with "other".

I would like to see an open forum to talk about some the interests and concerns of the older folks in our community, including myself. There are topics like retirement, housing, travel, finances and many other things which may offer some interesting discussions and, just maybe, help dispel some of the elder prejudice that, all too often, shows up on JUB.

I brought the idea up to the powers a year ago and was politely but firmly told that some other time might be more appropriate.

That could fit in a broader "Lifestyles" forum quite nicely, along with travel, etc.

Okay, I already have a string of posts, but....

It looks to me like two new forums would cover it all:

the Science (and technology) one
a "Lifestyles and Careers" one that would catch travel, food, military, etc.

I voted science, but I'd definitely drop in on one like the second I listed.

And by the way -- I'm assuming that science includes daydreaming about what we could be doing just over the horizon, too.

Definitely!

Wouldn't that be the 'non-hijacking' rule in the No Flame Zone?

I almost never pop into Religion so I'm not well acquainted with the flavor of posting there. Are you reporting these posts or contacting Ronboy?

My first inclination was “Science Forum: Science, Research, and Innovation,” but I voted for “No Flame Zone ‘Other Topics’- A place for all for any thread intended for serious discussion & no flames or disruptive postings.”

It just seems to me that a science forum plagued by flamers and their “drive-by posts” would become highly disruptive to individuals attempting serious discussion. I also agree with Kulindahr that the Religion and Spirituality forum tolerates far too many flippant comments which seriously detract from an otherwise valuable resource.

It may be somewhat ironic that I typically post in “the war zone” (CE&P), but I also imagine how nice it would be to have somewhere on the site to escape the anti-social bantering and idiocy. I understand that some people may have a systemic need to post wild and crazy BS, while others seem hell-bent to insult and destroy. I’m not sure how those individuals perceive that such “contributions” add value to the community, but I’ve certainly taken notice of various statements suggesting that “free speech” entitles that which is irresponsible. Nonetheless, it remains rather sad that some members seem to use their online anonymity to practice being less than they are – or perhaps more aptly “less than they are capable of being.”

A general “no flame zone” would be a welcome reprieve. pride:

clearly a science forum is best because it is well known fact that anyone who partakes in postgraduate science studies is insane and perfectly capable of holding a conversation with themselves therefore doubling or tripling the number of posters in the one forum

also it is a well know fact that most people who say "It's a well know fact" are usually speaking crap ;)

ohh in the time it has taken me to write this some one has voted for the science forum :D

I'd like to see a "no flame" science forum. We could have intelligent discussions without disruptions. That would be cool.

I voted for all of the above. Its nice to mix things up a little. Maybe some weeding and housekeeping is in order.

I never learned to speak crap -- can I get college credit for it? :p

But there's an idea -- what we need is a "Crap Forum", where all the stupid comments that drag things down can be moved. Drop them into random threads, since it's a well-known fact that people who speak crap don't care what conversation they're in.
