I believe this is why republicans find elections so vexing.
Or exhilarating.

They get to play identity racial and religious politics every time.

By the time the establishment is finished with Mamdani, he will be helping Iran build nukes to bomb Israel and Long Island.

They may also be expecting to do what the Black Mayor of Dallas did: get elected and then change his party affiliation to Republican.

Can you translate it?

Actually, as I understand it, among believers, when someone is speaking in tongues, there needs to be someone there who can "interpret" what is being said. If not, then the tongue-speaker needs to shut up. They apparently get this guidance from a scripture that St. Paul wrote in one of his epistles. At the moment I don't want to be bothered in looking up chapter and verse.

I really did look it up.

If anyone speaks in a tongue, two-- or at the most three-- should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God. --I Corinthians 14:27-28, NIV

Your memory is correct.

Interpretation is always sketchy on some of these things in the Epistles.

The thing that I always keep in mind is that the letters were intended to put out guidance to a bunch of churches that had gotten out of control in the new Christian religion. Corinth had a lot of gentile converts who were in conflict with Jewish Christians over what it required and what it meant to be Christian. There's also an implication that the Church of Corinth had gotten a little too "Pentecostal" and they were speaking in tongues in their public church services. Paul is trying to constrain the practice and put rules around it.

There's two things about that video that I found disturbing:
  • It's an example of how fringe religious behavior has become mainstream. More and more people are moving out of traditional denominations like Methodism and into these charismatic Pentecostal movements.
  • A generation ago, we were arguing about whether there should be religious prayers at secular governmental events. Now we have religion operating out of the White House. Without much controversy, Trump created a "Faith and Opportunity Initiative" and brought in a Florida Pentecostal church leader to run an evangelical outreach out of the White House. Biden got rid of that White House office in 2021 and Trump has brought it back again in 2025. And now they're speaking in tongues in front of the White House.

To bring it back to Corinthians... one has to wonder whether Paul was afraid that the Corinthians looked like a bunch of insane people babbling in public, which is why he brought it up in the letters to Corinth. And in fact, the people in that video look like a bunch of lunatics off their meds. But this is now what is "normal" in the Trump Administration.

Unfortunately, there's no Pauline figure around to try to reign these nutcases in.

I wonder if we could encourage religious wing-nut rattlesnake handling in the Oval office?

I would offer self-immolation as a better option.

I think we are devloping a pretty good profile of GQP voters in the US.

I wonder how Kirk would describe the first 90 or so justices who were installed on the court, obviously they are all white men so was it all merit or was there anything else going on?
