Anybody else refuse to tip ?

So long as the stupid loophole in US tax law where the service industries can get away with paying staff less than minimum wage based on the expectation of making up the shortfall in gratuities remains unclosed, tipping will remain necessary there.

So if you want that to change, you need to get Congress on your side.

Oh wow, now i get it. Because some low class individual doesn't have enough self esteem she had to lower her self to work at a low end paying job and expects me to pick up his/her slack in life ? I think not!
Do you hand that bitch at subway 10 bucks just because she made your a sandwich and drink ? In essence thats what waiting is. They do nothing more if not less than any other working individual. Do you tip your teachers, Macdonald employees, the bitch who opens the door for you at the bank, the hooker who takes your bags up to your room at a hotel ? So why should anybody be obligated to tip a person that dose a job a 10 year old can do ?

You're comparing apples and oranges and obviously know nothing about the restaurant business. If you think waiters and waitresses are supposed to cater to your every whim for nothing, eat at home. When I was a waiter, working my way through college, I used to love running into people like you, for the pure satisfaction of throwing a glass of water in your face. Stay home and eat. Your money is no greener than anyone else's.

You know Comrad, I might believe that you are an intelligent and sophisticated individual if you didn't have such horrific grammar and spelling skills.

To answer the question, I always tip. No one would want me to be their waitress, I probably couldn't carry the food w/o dropping it and I certainly wouldn't be able to put up w/ bitchy customers. Obviously not everyone could perform the job well.

Rent this movie...go on :-<

I would SO get fired if I did that, or anything remotely similar. Even if someone stiffed me on a huge check. My ass out the door.

who asked you to give $10 for tip?
If everyone has "high self-esteem" like you, an "UCLA student" who won't try to understand life, then there would be no waitress/waiter to serve the food, I wonder what would customer do?

eh procrasting from finals works. since you claim to go to ucla you should know that 40% of the students here are low income and on major financial aid, most of them working such a "low class low self esteem" job because they dont got a fucking choice. not everyone has mommy and daddy paying their way, maybe we do, but most of our classmates are busting 20-40 just to scrape by. show some respect.

I didn't either. ;) For people like those, they are going to get to wait much longer for their food and drink. Normally, the waitress/waiter will treat these ignorant people like "low class individuals" as Mister UCLA-student Comrad here put it

the poster's attitude is not representative of ucla btw, which is generally a smart tolerant middle class school. its actually closer to usc, filled with rich kids who look down on anybody different

Why has this been the 7th reply that has brought up where i attend school ? What dose that have to do with anything ?
People that work out of places lets say humm K-Mart style kinda of place, DO have low self esteem.

I have YET to see anybody post why waiters DESERVER a tip. I will bet you 100 bucks that a one legged teenager can do what these guys do for a "living".
Waiter comes and takes your order, gives you your food, hands you bill.
WoW thats tough,truly challenging.

Half of the time i have to get up myself and find/flag down my waiter before i can get refills for my drink.
So unless that bitch went to the back and hand squashed those lemons for my lemonade i just don't see why they DESERVE a tip...

Oh and BTW, i only procrastinate when i have the luxury to do so.
Don't you worry about this coming week. Im SURE i will do more than fine.

THen don't tip them!

you won't win many friends (unless you transfer to U$C, where this kind of attitude is common) but who are we to change your mind?

problem solved.

Your right, i DON'T represent for everyone at ucla, i never claimed to be a representative of the damn place. UCLA is in fucking Westwood. The only reason USC has that title as if is just because there a private university. Other than that USC and ucla are damn near identical.

I always tip, i theyre a bad waiter ill tip lower

In Australia we tip if we want to...I usually tip if the service has been good but if the wait person has an attitude then they will get a lesser tip.

Tipping in Australia is not mandatory but to a certain extent it is expected.

I realise that wait staff in the US are paid a low wage but tips are given for good service...if the service is not there then why tip?

Ok here the thing, i was having lunch with this guy today and well basically we got into a short spat over if im going to tip or not, and i basically said, FUCK NO! So he deiced to tip himself, i had no problem with this.
WHY i didn't tip was very simple and clear cut to me. My waitress did her fucking job, thats all she did. Its not like she came out flip flopping from the back while her vagina quifed Mozart.

All she did was take our orders, refill our drinks and hand us the bill. big fucking whop, who knew it was just that damn easy to earn 10 bucks. If i am not mistaken i heard rumors that the house also pays them hourly JUST like everybody working individual in the United States.
So why should i be obligated to tip someone for doing there job ?

Now, i will say this, if i ran across a waiter that exceptionally went out of there way to make my meal enjoyable im all down with that. Ive so far in life only ran into one, and she more then earned what she had coming to her. But just for your every day average server, hell no. Its always bad enough my meal was way over priced, you want MORE money out of me ?

Two things I suggest: 1) We sow what we reap. If you are good to others, including people that depend on tips, you will reap in other areas of life. Remember that. I'm in college myself again and always take into consideration my classmates that are busting their a----s trying to pay their way through school as well. What's a buck or 2 dude? 2) I get excellent service wherever I go: the multiple Starbucks, normal restaurants, pizza delivery (ALWAYS hot), hair salons, and especially bartenders. Why? Because I treat them like human beings and tip them. After they meet me once they go above and beyond to make sure I keep coming back. It feels pretty good to walk into a place and know that I and whoever is with me is going to be very well taken care of.

My b/f and I vary on this to an extent; he has an automatic $2.00 tip for ALL service, unless it was really terrible.

Whereas I have a sliding scale on tips.

We hang out at a local Boston Pizza quite a bit, so much so that almost all of the servers know us there and have memorized small bits of our order (when we don't shake things up).

There is a particular waitress there that goes above and beyond the call of duty, always spends extra time talking with us if it's not busy, comps us our drinks now and then, and looks after us really well. I've given her a $7.00 tip once just because of the personable service she provides. Also, not to mention, that she "ups" the Air Miles on our bill, so despite only having a $24 bill, we often get around $100 in Air Miles...

But yea...If the service is that great, I reflect it in the tip. If it's average, 1-2 dollars is fine. If it down right sucks, or is something I think wasn't up to par (waiting too long and such) then I'll stiff them.

When I was a waiter I did not just take your order and give you your food. You know the people who ate before you? I had to clean up their shit or you would be eating on top of their plates. That silverware that was rolled up you eat with? I had to roll that. The salad you were eating? I had to make that. The ranch you might have on that? I might have even had to make that for you. The refill you need for your soda? I had to do that. The other 10 tables I stop by when you are eating? I am probably not just saying hello. I do the same thing for them. Sounds easy? Sometimes it is. You try keeping numerous amounts of people happy with all the soda/beverage they want. Bring them the condiments you want, and be prepared for anything wrong to be taken out on you. I've had to deal with some pretty ignorant customers when I was a waiter. The worse part is when you have a table of 20 people and they leave you a dollar.

I wasn't begging for money, and if I did a shitty job I expected you to pay me little or even nothing. I went out of my way to make sure everyone had the waiter I would want. Also, just for the record, I am a very happy person.

Yeah, it's also a "karma" thing. Don't expect the universe to give you much.......

My sister is a teacher who also works two or three nights a week at an upscale Italian restaurant. She works her ass off providing a pleasant dining experience for her customers...15-20 per cent tip isn't exorbitant at all for doing her job, which is providing good service in a friendly and helpful manner.most who work in the restauraunt service industry don't do it as their primary source of income, but as a supplement. Many happen to be working their way through college...but they provide a service that makes dining out as pleasant experience.Really good service I'll go 25% for a job really well done, going out of one's way to truly provide an outstanding dining experience. They often work damn hard for the money, and I'm going to show my appreciation and thanks by rewarding them.

A couple of times I have been poorly served, resulting in me tipping 5-10%,but that has been few and far between.I am happy if I leave 20% or more because most times the server really is attentive, courteous and helpful.

well when I think about it no, why should I tip, I mean yeah Im paying them to do their job pus my food.

But, most of their money comes from tips, and I know that their job probably sucks...everyday, and tipping doesnt cost that much really, especially in a grup we just chip in like 3 or 4 dollars extra cash each...sometimes, list but they still get a big tip (lots of times i go into resteruants with 13 people or over when its me and my friends, only on certain occasions, like in high school after one of our performances in Drama, we went out as a cast to dinner, tons of fun) so the waitress or waiter got a huge tip from us, but most restraunts spilt their tips between all the workers which i think is stupid, because then the dip shit bitchy waiters and waitresses get them too!...lol
