Anybody else refuse to tip ?

I can eat out in a fancy restaurant once a while but seriously I dont think i want to tip £2-3 because I see it as the money for food for my next day

and as for as working for a living counts..I dont get where u inferred that from but I have been working from since I was 16..from giving painting tuitions to small children..to working in a bar picking up glasses..and thats why I know the importance of the money I spend..

if you cannot afford to tip you cannot afford to eat out

if you can't afford to tip but are blowing your money at "fancy restaurants" than you do not know the importance of the money that you spend

eating out in a "fancy restaurant" is not a necessity - if the cost of a tip is too much, thrn you cant afford to eat there anyway, buy at the store and cook at home or go to a fast food place -

the wait staff is not there to make you feel like a big guy, they are working for their living -

maybe you can hum Lennon's Working Class Hero as you return all the tips you have gotten in your life

It is amazing the things you learn about people in threads like these.

Just keep them coming folks....

And nope, I've never waited. I wouldn't have the patience. It requires a certain social skill set to wait effectively, and I don't have it.

and after a post about the hard work of being wait staff

Oh come come come. SUREly you exaggerate. Why a TEN year old can do it.

nothing like having it both ways, huh?

if you've never done it you have no idea how hard it is -

and it is damn hard work and at the same time requires that certain skill set because of the top of the hard work and the social graces you get to be treated like a servant by assholes who don't tip

I think that most people who have been in the food industry will agree that the smaller the tip, the bigger the self-important demanding whiny ungrateful asshole

Joeyorklife is wisely staying away from this donniebrook, josher. At least, I hope he is (& will). And I said he was TRYING to usurp Don Rickles style, not that he was being successful. If we all go home, maybe he can make himself some din-din.

Oh LORD, and i thought i was a drama King. What the hell dose people thinking for them selves and putting actual thought at were there money goes, connected to the shallow-ness of human beings ? The end is truly near.

i'm sorry... you're right.

"shallow" is a poor choice of words on my part.

doo·fus n. pl. doo·fus·es
Slang An incompetent, foolish, or stupid person.

[Perhaps blend of doof, fool (from Scots) and goofus, fool (from goof).]

Noun1.doofus - a stupid incompetent person. dimwit, nitwit, half-wit

Don't worry. Someone will spit in his food soon enough!

There are so many people before me that made such excellent points but I'd like to add a few more things...

When I was in China last year on business the one thing I learned is that the Chinese culture does not generally accept or expect gratuities. They believe that they're getting paid to do a job and no one should have to pay them more then they're already receiving. It was a very odd thing for me to experience and something that I didn't quite like, especially since so many of the service workers went out of their way for me.

On my first stay I ended up leaving money with a note in my hotel room for the staff - thanking them for their help and whatnot. On my next visit one of the hotel workers who previously helped me noticed me as I walked into the hotel and ended up giving me a really beautiful room overlooking the lake. He also ended up going out of his way to making sure I was comfortable and enjoying my stay. After leaving on this visit I ended up leaving another tip in the room for the staff because they all went above and beyond.

Morale of the story, tipping just goes along with the territory in many situations and places. Even if you don't have to tip it never hurts to do so. Plus, service jobs aren't the easiest and something that so many people bust their ass to do and not necessarily because they want to have that sort of job but because they NEED to have a job. Plus, I've just always been taught that people should be compensated for their time, dedication, skill and service. It's just the right thing to do... a form of etiquette.

Why has this been the 7th reply that has brought up where i attend school ? What dose that have to do with anything ?
People that work out of places lets say humm K-Mart style kinda of place, DO have low self esteem.

I have YET to see anybody post why waiters DESERVER a tip. I will bet you 100 bucks that a one legged teenager can do what these guys do for a "living".
Waiter comes and takes your order, gives you your food, hands you bill.
WoW thats tough,truly challenging.

Half of the time i have to get up myself and find/flag down my waiter before i can get refills for my drink.
So unless that bitch went to the back and hand squashed those lemons for my lemonade i just don't see why they DESERVE a tip...

Oh and BTW, i only procrastinate when i have the luxury to do so.
Don't you worry about this coming week. Im SURE i will do more than fine.

Dude, first off, you write so much nonsense that if you are educated learn to spell!.."Dose" is NOT does, "there job" should be spelled THEIR JOB, "DESERVER"? what is that? All your posts have at least 3 of the easy words spelt wrong.

Second...you contradict yourself......if you have to "flag them down to get a refill on your drink" isn't that called SERVICE.......there is a difference between SELF -SERVICE..which you do at fast foods to FULL SERVICE.......

Thirdly, working as a waiter or waitress or K-Mart (your earlier post) has NOTHING to do with self-esteem.

Fourth, do you tip valets? Huh....bet you do cause you don't want something to happen to your car., Do you tip bell men? Do you tip cab drivers? do you tip barbers? etc. etc....SERVICE ....they are doing something to assist you..... someone that makes sandwiches at subway are far different than a waiter/ress....they make your sandwich then you are out of there....a waiter/ress is STUCK with you at least an hour well you sit, eat, talk, linger..........

Just don't go out to eat...good thing your pic isn't posted or people on this site that are waiters in your area would be on the lookout for you....:-)

Putting it like that, you seem to take credit for the chef's work. Maybe I should starting giving the majority of my tip to the chef.

And then there are the busboys who likely too are making just minimum wage. I should tip them for having a clean table when I arrive.

Yes I'm sure waiting can be hard work, and I usually do tip accordingly. But some people here are talking like they're doing all the work in the restaurant.

But the busboys do not make minimum wage even. They make more per hour than servers, but not even minimum wage. I make $3.30 per hour and they make somewhere around $4.50. Therefore, it is MY duty to tip out the busboy for their hard work. If they do a good job, I give 20% of what I make in a shift. If their work is okay I give 15% and if it sucks, I will tip less than 15%. Your tip to me actually helps the busboys out, in turn. Cooks do a good job with the food, but they also make a hell of a lot more than servers do. In the restaurant I work in, they make anywhere from $10 to almost $20 per hour. With money like that, tips aren't necessary. They also work sunup to sundown on many occasions, and I would never imply that I work harder than any cook.

WOW, you are really shallow, i would really like to see you do what these people do. They make 2.50 to 3.00 an hour and are expected to be tipped to make up for the difference. If you think its so easy get your ass out there and do it. I know the life of someone trying to support people on that kind of income. My dad left me and my brother when we my mom was still had him inside her, and i was like 18 months old. The only job she could find is as a waitress and she is the strongest person i know. She didnt worl there because she had selfesteem issues she did it because she had no choice. She was kicked out by her parents and left without anyone with 2 kids. She worked way over 40 hours a week. And she worked her ass off. and dont you dare say it was easy untill you do it. She was able to work her way up into district management makeing over $250K a year. Its a good thing everyone isnt as selfish and shallow as you tho. I doubt my family would have made out like we are if they were. You need to get off your high horse and realize that most people have to work for what they have, and if your lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family you should be happy to help people who have to stuggle to pay there bills. People like you get on my nerves so bad. I've been taken care of well off by someone who started as a waitress. I wont ever, ever forget that i wouldnt have anything i have if my mom didnt endure people like you trying to make other people life difficult because you have no fucking clue what you are talking about. if you tip or not its your choice, but being able to afford it and not tipping just shows how much of a stuck up dumbass you really are.

I have given this some more thought...and would like to add another two cents worth.

Yes, 90% of the wait staff, no matter what country, work their butts off. My rule of thumb in Australia is that I always add a minimum of 5% but for really good service that increases to around 15-20%.

Australia is slight different in that wait staff do not rely on tips...they get a reasonable wage and the tips are a bonus.

Whether or not waitpersons deserve to be tipped is irrelevant. Whether or not tipping is a practical and efficient manner of paying waitstaff for their work is irrelevant.

Tipping is simply part of the social contract, and if you don't like it, don't use the services for which you're expected to tip. Or move to a country where it's not expected. It's really that simple.

Not tipping is essentially the same as stealing. The waiter is working for you in expectation of a tip, and if you stiff him or her, you've stolen that service, same as if you'd walked out without paying the bill.

Ok here the thing, i was having lunch with this guy today and well basically we got into a short spat over if im going to tip or not, and i basically said, FUCK NO! So he deiced to tip himself, i had no problem with this.
WHY i didn't tip was very simple and clear cut to me. My waitress did her fucking job, thats all she did. Its not like she came out flip flopping from the back while her vagina quifed Mozart.

All she did was take our orders, refill our drinks and hand us the bill. big fucking whop, who knew it was just that damn easy to earn 10 bucks. If i am not mistaken i heard rumors that the house also pays them hourly JUST like everybody working individual in the United States.
So why should i be obligated to tip someone for doing there job ?

Now, i will say this, if i ran across a waiter that exceptionally went out of there way to make my meal enjoyable im all down with that. Ive so far in life only ran into one, and she more then earned what she had coming to her. But just for your every day average server, hell no. Its always bad enough my meal was way over priced, you want MORE money out of me ?

people as cheap as you should not be allowed near restaurants.

I'm a student who has "service" on wednesday evening. Basically its a requirement for my course to work at our schools restaurant. And might I say it changed my views on waiters... Yes it is true we get payed but its just minimum wage. And as our instuctor said we are lower thasn guard dogs... cause guard dogs are expensive to replace but its easy to replace waiters... Its hard to be a waiter because if the customer is always nagging or keeps changing orders or whatever the chefs get mad at us. And it is not easy carrying 3 or more plates without going back and forth. And tip big cause we treat you well. And the thing is in our restaurant WE DO NOT GET THE TIP!!! we give it to charity...

BTW charity is not the name of my friend... as in a real charity hehhehe i hope they give some to us though...

ohh and on my 1st day a customer complained about his food "This is too boney" and you know what he ordered? ???? A Duck!!!!!! i mean hello ducks really do have bones and its not like a chicken! and you didnt ask for a fillet!

In America, waiters require tips in order to bring their pay up to a normal level.

In America, we all tip our waiters. You can choose how much, but minimum is around 15% unless the service was horrible.

If knowing both of those things, and you still choose not to tip, you'll probably piss off the waiter. But more importantly, you'll reveal your low-class character to whomever you're dining with.

oh this surely has got to be a joke!

I haven't read much here.....but from working as a server for 9 years during breaks from college, I have to chime in.

Instead of ranting forever (which I could do on this subject) I'll sum it up for you with two main points:

You WANT to tip because:

1) Do you want bodily fluids or other objects in your food?:

If you plan on returning to that establishment for food, you best have a good tipping reputation. If you have a very bad tipping reputation (aka stiffing your server) get prepared for food that has been fucked with. (I have witnessed this first hand)

2) Do you want to end up paying 20 dollars for a burger?
If no one tips, prices will have to be raised to cover the cost of the servers' CORRECT wages.

Bottom line...never bite the hand that feeds you.

Also...watch out for karma....in your next life you might come back as an overweight, ugly diner waitress.
