So, I wished someone at work Happy Holidays on Friday. Another co-worker corrected me and said, "You mean Merry Christmas..."

I said, "No, I mean Happy Holidays because some people are non-believers, Jewish, or non-Christians."

She said, "Well, there are none of those around here, so it's Merry Christmas."

How the hell do you know? I was pissed, so i said, "Okay, how about Merry X-Mas..."

The keep Christ in Christmas alarm went off with her and I got a silly lecture. I smiled and walked away...ba humbug!

How petty is this? Seriously, correcting someone on a Holiday wish. SMH.

What do you tell people?

I wish I could find cards which said "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays." I HAVE *NEVER* SEEN A CARD LIKE THAT. Virtually EVERYBODY has more than one holiday during this "season" because New Year's happens during this period as well. Furthermore, many people go to at least one get-together, and even though it usually doesn't involve taking time from work (they're usually on weekends), they can be considered "holidays" as well - or, at the very least, a "holiday gathering" or such.

Observant Jews don't celebrate New Year's on January 1 (as it's about a "quarter" earlier...or, from the other direction, about three quarters later), however Jews just like anybody else will often get time off work on that date (and often New Year's Eve as well), so it is STILL a holiday. Likewise with whoever doesn't observe or celebrate Christmas, they usually have a HOLIDAY away from work. (I don't know which other religions, such as Islam or Buddhism, may celebrate the "New Year" at a time other than January 1, but those observers probably get 1/1 as a work holiday as well.)

Many people have three of four "holidays" during this period (only ONE, or even zero, of which is actually an OBSERVANCE of Christmas), so why NOT Happy Holidays?

I can't use Happy Hannukah, though - that just seems rather contrived, because (even though some observers do exchange gifts) it is generally a "serious" observance, in accordance with its important history. "Happy" isn't inappropriate, as much as it may simply be entirely neutral or not applicable to the observance. Furthermore, just like Merry Christmas, it's "non-inclusive" by ignoring the other holidays during the period, even without taking into account any religious differences and such.

Besides lamenting the complete absence of a "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays" greeting, what happened to "Happy New Year"??? I don't think they make "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" cards anymore??? How strange.

Sounds like some people need to get a life. Most PCers do really.

I think Happy Holidays are fine and people who have a problem with it are just selfish in their own beliefs.

To be honest, I have some sympathy for the lady. It's actually the PC brigade that has changed it from Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays, if you ask me. Last time I looked December 25th was Christmas Day, so why not just say it because that's what it is. These days it has more of a traditional, family significance than a religious one. Next thing, people will be wanting to ban Christmas carols in case it offends people. Lol.

It is not PC to recognize the fact that not everyone celebrates the same holidays. Personally I find it more respectful.

I say merry Christmas unless I know the person is not celebrating Christmas. I work with a few Jews and Muslims, but I don't do generic by default.

I think Happy Holidays is an Americanism by and large. It's not done much elsewhere; certainly not here in .za.

I rarely offer holiday greetings anymore, simply because the receivers do tend to be so stuck up and self centered that if it doesn't take into account their personal belief system (which is often times unknowable to the stranger offering greetings) they get all butt hurt and make a fuss. If you're going to get upset over simple well wishes because I didn't offer the "proper" one to you because I don't know which holiday you celebrate, then you don't deserve any seasons greetings. You have placed yourself in the group of idiots that, for whatever personal reasons, needs to destroy the holidays for everybody. If you get a Happy Holidays from someone who doesn't know what you observe, be thankful someone is thinking kindly of you and accept it for what it is, well wishes for you and your kin. Offer general greetings back, unless you know which holiday they observe. That is how I do it. Say a woman offers me a Happy Holidays, and I see a Star of David around her neck..... I'll likely offer a Happy Hanukeh(sp). If I see them with Christmas wrapping, or wrapped presents its Merry Christmas. There;s nothing wrong with the general Happy Holidays, as it does offer wide inclusiveness to all.

Well, perhaps New Zealanders are rather a disrespectful lot then because here if anyone greets another with Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas in these last few days before Christmas Day, people would think it was a rather odd greeting.

I admit I often write Xmas instead of Christmas because I'm an atheist and the Christmas Month has turned into an orgy of Capitalist Consumerism and Emotional Blackmail.

Sounds like some people need to get a life. Most PCers do really.
I must quote you on that. :)

I would've thought "Happy Holidays" was more PC...? It's very much an Americanism, though; I'm from the UK, we all say "Merry Christmas" here.

Christmas is the Holiest of all days, so 'Happy Holy Day' would be right.
But it does sound odd.
