Have you ever gotten up from your couch to go to the kitchen to get something, but upon arrival you have forgotten why the hell you went into the kitchen? Then as soon as you got back to the couch you suddenly remember.

This also applies to other settings. A couple days ago, I found that I had ran out of staples. I looked in my drawers and couldn't find any. So, I got up to go to the storage to get some more staple. When I got there, I honestly had no idea why the hell I went there in the first place. So, I went back to my office. As soon as I got back, I suddenly remembered why I went.

Apparently, your brain is pre-programed to reset the short term memory when you leave the old room and into a new room. It's an interesting phenomenon that actually explains a lot.

Ahhh...interesting...

I have been relying on other people my age insisting this happens to them too all the time....

No matter what anyone says..I keep thinking it is early dementia...

Evidently, it happens to lots of us. I hear lots of people say the same thing. It's normal.

You guys might want to get your names on the waiting list for Shady Pines. We all know someone there who might give you a good reference, unless they've segregated him from the rest of the population.

I sure hope Fabulouslyghetto doesn't notice I said segregated. You know how he gets his panties in a bunch so easily.

I believe it happens to pretty much everyone. The power of association d'idées is great.

Similarly, when we search for a word and can't quite get it, it's no used straining to remember it right away, but often it's better to think about others words linked by context or sentences where both are frequently used.

I think it's quite interesting to know of our 2 brains and how they work relative to each other :)

Short-term memory is just that: short term. Memories don't go directly into the long-term memory. They loll about in our short-term until you decide to file it in your long term. Think of it as a very small flash drive which, second by second, purges old memories to make room for new ones. Anything you don't need gets dumped.

That's why people with dementia can remember things from their childhood but often can't remember if they're waking up or just going to bed.

Think of it this way. If I asked you what you had for dinner last night, you could probably tell me. If I ask you what you had for dinner the day before yesterday, you would have to really think. You're not pulling that out of your long-term memory. There's no reason for it to be there. It's still tucked into a corner of your short term and, if you're lucky, you can pull it out.

People with no short-term memory cannot create new memories. They must be processed in the short-term memory first. That's why those people must write everything down so they will know what they must remember. (Taking medications twice could be seriously dangerous.) They used to do it on paper. I'm guessing a tablet would make that task much easier.

That is why i usually write things down what i want to buy.
Otherwise i will forget what to buy at the shop.

Fr too many people shutting their minds down and just coasting through life on autopilot. Might as well be zombies, the lot of you.

And they took away my hot plate!

You DO realize it starts with dropping vowels when you type, don't you?

I read once a few scientist or whatever believed a similar scenario was responsible for the deja vu feeling many get. Your brain does a quick reset, the previous thought, and subsequent thought come through as a "I've been here before, done this before"

I believe that is true. Much of what we perceive as eerie, other worldly, etc., are just anomalies or fluctuations the brain causes. They believe that whole going into the light sensation from people who were dead is actually the brain and its sensations.

Yes, I've had that problem. It is surprising that science is coming up with an explanation. That surprised me and now I can blame it on that and not senility.
