Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Boris checked in recently.

But I'm sorry to learn of dynk's passing.

I'm fine here. Went to a disappointing concert last night that I don't really want to talk about.

There's a naked poetry reading tonight that I actually considered going to. But I think not.
There are rwo gay-themed Fringe events I DO want to go to. And...pre-season hockey Thursday! The Flyers host the Islanders, tickets are cheap, so why not go see the rookies?

And Jukebix the Ghost has been my favorite band for years now. This is from their third album, 12 years ago (they're now about to release #7). Love the dancing

OK, I went to the naked poetry reading

It was in a bad neighborhood, with a syringe disposal box in plain sight on the street. But it was convenient, near the Huntingdon El stop...and it turned out to be a clean modern artist studio. And just $10, such a deal.
Tommy the poet was a bigger guy with very big balls. He was naked all along. We talked and I liked him. His poems were from his experiences. I thought he doesn't take himself too seriously but he sees a lot quite clearly. He was an English major at Fordham so was affected by Catholuc education, and was married but lost his wife suddenly to illness 10 years ago
The crowd was small. But it included Mike, a fair-haired guy in glasses who was quite well-hung and who I found very attractive. We "flirted."
No "happy ending" but maybe pretty close. (Hey, it's JUB, I'm allowed to be sexual!)
When it was over we dressed, said goodbye to Tommy, and went on our ways. But I have a really good new fantasy now.
I'm glad I went.

Good Monday morning Gary, Thad, and Paul! (*8*)

Gary, I don't think I recall conversing with Paul (dynk) very much. I seem to have been a fairly recent arrival at JUB, and he must have stopped posting regularly by the time I came onboard. Though I'm sorry that he passed. I miss Billy too. But it seems we're in the age group where people leave this earthly plane. I'm a member of several groups (MCC, the genealogical society, the Prime Timers, the Rare Fruit Council) whose membership are heavily weighted toward the elderly, and regularly lose members to death. I'm sure you can feel lonely when those you regularly talked to and associated with are gone.

Thad, I like that Jukebox the Ghost video you posted. Also, I'm glad you had fun at the Naked Poetry Reading, and I'm sure you're glad that Paul prompted you to go. My ex is a nudist, and we went to lots of naked events when I was with him. Once we went to a nude costume party where he wore a Bill Clinton mask, and I wore a Queen Elizabeth mask, a set of plastic boobs, and nothing else.

Well, the municipal code inspector is supposed to come by to check out the new water heater on Wednesday. I hope they OK it, and that's going to be the last I hear of them for a while.

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing to me My Friend

I hope you have a fun and cool week , take care

Hi John! I'm spending a couple quiet days around home, not doing a couple things I should be doing. I hope I find motivation before Thursday. That's our trash collection day and I need to clear some clutter. Having it here another week, No.

Hope all is well with you! I like your stories and since they're new to me I eat them up.

Good Thursday morning Thad, Frankie, and Andrew! (*8*)

Tuesday afternoon I addressed postcards to people returning to society from prisons in Florida, advising them on how to get their voting rights restored. Florida is one of only a few states which essentially bars people from voting for the rest of their lives unless granted clemency by the board of governors, and they have to pay all their fines and restitution, etc. Supposedly there are one 1 million Floridians who are disqualified from voting. I actually felt good, in that I was doing something, rather than just allowing all those huge forces beyond our control decide things for us.

I finally got the municipal code inspector to look at my new hot water heater and OK it yesterday . So at least I'm all done with that.

Hurricane Helene is in the Gulf west of Florida, and it looks like it's taking a path similar to Ian, Idalia, and Debby. Right here the weather shouldn't be too bad, maybe a little wind and rain in a few squalls. But North Florida around Tallahassee and points east looks like they're going to get the worst of it, and the Tampa Bay Area will get some storm surge. It's going to be a real mess in some places.

(*8*) Good day, John.

Hope Helene stays on a course well away from you.

In my 80+ years, I have replaced many water heaters. Never have I ever had to have an inspector. Just bought one at a hardware store and installed it myself. Nothing to it. Guess us in the Wild West do not like authority.

I liked Jukebox the Ghost.

Still mourning dynk's passing. 😢 Now I am worried about our pastor. He is 79 with failing health. He was unable to do last Sunday's service. This week a pastor from Lake Havasu City will provide for us.

The heat has returned and yesterday it hit 112F. melt.gif

But on the good side, my cold water has cooled to the point I can have a pleasant shower.

Hey John, it's a little breezy today. I wonder why?

Good evening, John.
I never understood the election system in the USA, but the fact that people can be banned from voting is over the top. Wow.

I hope the new hurricane doesn't cause you much trouble.

Good Friday morning Paul, Dan, and Gary! (*8*)

Hey Dan, glad to see you on here. How'd you make out with hurricane Helene? It really wasn't too bad here, just a bit of wind in a few squalls, and some quick showers, not much to worry about. Otherwise it was pretty normal, with mail and garbage pickup as usual, and I went out and did my grocery shopping.

Speaking of Helene, I haven't heard much yet about damage. It had winds of 130 mph before landfall, but it went in at a relatively lightly populated area of north Florida. It sounds like it was a mess in the Tampa Bay Area, with one section of Tampa being told not to flush their toilets or drain their sinks due to a sewage backup. There has been rising storm water along the bays and barrier islands, and roads in those areas have been closed.

Gary, I never heard of needing a permit for a hot water heater before either, but I had a reputable company install mine, so I figured they knew what they were doing. It must be a new law or something. It's too bad that the heat has returned to the desert, though I'm glad your cold water has cooled down enough to take nice showers.

Paul, I had always heard all my life about how the United States is the best democracy in the world, in school, the media, people mouthing off, etc. But It's becoming more apparent that the real answer is not really. There are too many voter restriction laws, and tricks like gerrymandering and voter ID laws, archaic laws like the electoral college, etc. And it doesn't help that the media tends to do a poor job of educating the public about elections, candidates, and issues.

Thad, I noticed your remark about my stories. I'm not sure if you're referring to the anecdotes I post in the MSFW forum, or the erotic stories I've posted in the Gay Stories forum. In those stories, I try to write about things that turn me on, and I notice there's usually an undercurrent of humor in most of them, I even get snarky at times. I mean, you have to admit that the things that turn people on are often strange and weird, and laughing at ourselves and our foibles is part of being human.

^ Yes, both your fiction and the day-to-day stories in this thread.
Hey, if we can't laugh at and with ourselves, what's the point?
It's gray and cloudy here, but only sprinkling. I did stay in today.
Happy weekend!

Good Monday morning, Thad! (*8*)

Well, I didn't exactly have the best weekend. A nasty gastrointestinal bug hit me Saturday morning, and I had to spend half the morning on the toilet. It wasn't too bad the rest of the time, but I spent the whole weekend only drinking liquids, like iced tea, coffee, and ice water, no food, until it clears up. I added chicken broth Sunday. This morning I started easing back toward a regular diet, with a half glass of orange juice, coffee, and cream of wheat.

The backyard needs mowing badly, but I figured that it wasn't worth expending all that effort while I was sick, and the highs were 94 on Saturday, and 92 on Sunday, with the requisite Florida humidity. It wasn't worth killing myself.

Hi Johnnie , thanks for taking time to write to me

I'm doing same old as usual

I hope you feel better , take care buddy

Hi John! Happy October!

I hope you're back "on your feed." Bad joke, I know.

I woke up early this morning achy and decided to stay up and do things. Coffee has helped. It's 6 am but I feel OK now.

The Philadelphia Fringe Festival is over but I saw two shows the final weekend. Saturday was comedy, Sunday was "a solo queer noir musical, bitch." I know...I'm still wrapping my head around THAT. Both were entertaining.

I have nothing on my agenda today. Retirement can be amazing.

Hope your day goes well, lawn care or not.

Good Thursday morning Paul, Thad, and Frankie! (*8*)

Well, I've recovered nicely after this past weekend's minor ailment, and I'm back to eating fully anything I want. I did mow (most of) my backyard the other night. We're getting no break from the heat, so I waited until evening. But the days are getting shorter, so it got dark before I could finish. Oh well, there's just a couple of sections that I left, that I have to be careful of, because there are things in those areas I don't want to mow down. At least now I can go into those areas at my leisure.

I've been watching the tropics. Hurricane Kirk has become a monster storm with 125 mph winds, but it's in the middle of the Atlantic and not expected to bother anybody, and Leslie is right behind it. They keep saying that they think something will develop in the Gulf of Mexico, but so far it hasn't, and they're gradually lowering their probability for it. But they seem to think Florida will get lots of rain.

Speaking of the tropics, in the Pacific off Mexico they have tropical depression 11-E, which they think will develop into a tropical storm and go into the coastline. So far it's done neither. They have tropical storm warnings from Lagunas de Chacahua to Boca de Pijijiapan. Don't you love those Mexican names? They must have driven those Spanish linguists nuts trying to transliterate and spell native indigenous names into Spanish. And then English speakers with limited knowledge of Spanish pronunciation come upon those names and go, WTF? I keep looking at and looking at those names, trying to figure them out. I think the last one is pronounced something like "PEE-HEE-HEE-UPON."

PEE-HEE-HEE-UPON :rotflmao:
