Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Good Tuesday morning Frankie, Thad, Loner, RM, and Eaglex! (*8*)

Well, I got the crowns from the dentist. She used the temporary cement on the tooth that was hurting me, with an appointment in two weeks to see how it's doing. It has been doing better, but I had to take an ibuprofen yesterday when the pain acted up again.

I hope all of my fellow American friends enjoyed Independence Day. I'm sorry, but I just couldn't get into it this year, feeling that it celebrates a country that no longer exists. :( I eventually made myself go out and watch the municipal fireworks, since they set them off close to where I live.

Well, my mangos are almost done for this year, with only a handful left on the tree. I'll probably do the annual fertilizer application next week, putting out a special 0-3-16 fruit tree formula next week. It has no nitrogen, and nitrogen fertilizers are banned in Florida from June 1 until September 30 to prevent algae and aquatic growth in the waterways. Besides that, my mango trees are fully grown, and I don't want them to get any bigger. And I don't apply nitrogen fertilizers in the spring when the fruit is developing, since that supposedly negatively impacts the flavor.

I ran my lawn mower last night, when it finally got cool enough to do it. There was only a little gas in the tank, so I figured that I would mow the tallest grass until the fuel ran out. There must be a second, hidden gas tank in that mower, because I was able to mow the whole yard. Also, there are large areas where tall grass and weeds grow because of plantings where the lawn mower can't get to. The other day I cut lots of tall grass and filled a whole can of yard clippings. That can must have weighed 40 pounds when I filled it up.

Good Sunday evening, Gary! (*8*)

Wow, that's some kind of heat! I wouldn't even go out to get my mail in that. But then again you've lived out there for years, and you know what the weather is like in the summer.

Well, I was going to give you some rants about things that have been aggravating me in the past week or so, but I can't seem to make myself write a book about them. So I'll just give a short summary.

Rant #1. I called Comcast to see if I could cut my bill. Instead I get this SOB trying to hard sell me on switching my cell phone service to them, and acting like getting a more frugal package was an annoyance. I nearly hung up on him. The thing is, they never tell you what's in their packages and bundles, so you can't make an intelligent decision on what you need and don't need. I finally got a slight reduction, but I don't think it will be enough. I'm thinking I'll have to cut out television entirely and go with internet only.

Rant #2. I've been trying to help out with volunteering at the MCC Food Pantry. I called the guy that runs it on the morning, only to find out that he had canceled it AGAIN! Mind you, he's kept that thing closed for a month, with the shelves stocked. His excuse, again, was that we were going to have "hurricane rains" again. Bullshit! I know the weather patterns here, and I could tell that we probably wouldn't even get rain at all that day.

Rant #3. I'm supposed to get the permanent cement on the crown of the one tooth that has been hurting on Thursday. The pain is still acting up, and I'm still having to take ibuprofen from time to time. That probably means a root canal. More work, and another big chunk of money. Ugh!

Oh no! I trust SOMETHING good is happening to offset the bad!

My ex used to work for Comcast/Xfinity in NJ. He said to ask specifically for "retention" if you want to keep your service but get a better deal. They have more power.

I'm fine! I'm kinda wasting the day today but it's all good. And I get money tomorrow.

Good Friday morning, Thad! (*8*)

Mango season has just about wrapped up, but not to worry. My guava tree and my carambola/starfruit tree have both started to give me ripe fruit for breakfast. I need to get out there and give all my fruit trees their midsummer fertilizer. I can only use my no-nitrogen fertilizer at this time of year, which is fine, since I now have mostly mature trees, and I certainly don't want to encourage them to get any bigger. Though I still have several young saplings still struggling out there which could probably use the nitrogen boost. It seems that with my soil and climate, everything either struggles until it gives up, or has explosive growth like crazy, no in between.

Well, I did go to the dentist this week. I was pissed at them because they changed my appointment from Thursday to Wednesday without contacting me first. I went ahead and took the Wednesday appointment, since I happened to be free. Of course you can never guarantee that.

So, I told the dentist that my tooth wasn't as bad, but it still hurts at times. So she didn't do the permanent cementing, but filed down the crown further, which was not a pleasant experience, with an appointment to come back in two weeks. Since then, my tooth hasn't been hurting, but there is enough feeling there, as the tooth is on standby, as in, I don't hurt now, but I'll be sure to let you know the instant I feel pain. So, I'm hoping it will go down, so I won't have to get that root canal.

Interestingly enough, the appointment change left me open to volunteer at the food pantry. Maybe that's why it got changed at the higher level, who knows? Anyway, the pantry was actually open, so I helped put together packages for the clients. As it turned out, all the younger gay guys showed up to help, and oh, I overheard some juicy gossip from them. I'm finding out that it's like As the World Turns with that crowd. As for the guy that runs the food pantry, I wondered why the weather was OK that morning, when there were showers around that morning, but not OK the other day when he insisted that it was going to storm but it didn't. I figured he just doesn't want to tell us what was really going on.

And yesterday I got a strange request. As I was leaving the food pantry, a young guy, a real cutie, drove up in his pickup. He asked me to go to some courthouse hearing for him. As I understood it, he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, with them claiming his permit had expired, but he insisted that it hadn't. Apparently he was in the vicinity of a local Pride Fest, which I suspect was what this was all about, they probably wouldn't have bothered anywhere else. They were probably justifiably worried that some crazy would attack. Anyway, he's a sweet guy, though he seems a bit childlike, and made me think, how well do I know him anyway? That made me realize that I really know very little about the law around concealed weapon permits, and besides, the other young guys know him a lot better, so they could vouch for him at the hearing.

As far as the Comcast bill, it came out about $21 lower than the guy on the phone quoted to me. It's still a bit more than I'd like to pay, but I'll try to swing with it for now.

I did a little gardening this morning after my last post. Someone had halfway broken off a branch off my Yucca elephantipes, so I cut it off and planted the separate piece in the ground. Then I dug up some tall grasses. But it was hot and humid with the sun shining strong, and I got tired and sweaty, and had to quit before 10. There is a heat advisory today, but I hadn't even reached the time it went into effect.

Passiflora #1.jpegPassiflora #2.jpeg

This is a passion flower vine which volunteered in my yard. It seems to be some wild variety, and is clearly not any of the edible kinds. It will form bright red 1" capsules with seeds, but there is no flesh inside. But it does have a nice fragrance. It must be an annual or short-term perennial, in that from what I've seen it will eventually die. But it's nice to have something unexpected like this to grace my garden.

Hello Johnnie

Have a fun weekend . those are pretty flowers

Good afternoon, John.
A few weeks ago I took a Yuca someone had left at the trash containers. At the moment I'm not seeing any changes, I'm not sure it will survive. Any tips?
First I kept it inside, 2 days ago I moved it outdoors to the balcony to give it more sunlight. Am I right?

Hi John!1000000063.jpg
I did go to Atlantic City for the car show/organ spectacular. I took pictures. They gave a tour of the organ shop where restoration is happening, too.

Good Sunday morning Thad, Paul, Frankie, and Loner! (*8*)

Thad, that Atlantic City arena looks like a good venue for events. I can see how they had a minor league hockey franchise there. I'm glad you got to enjoy the vintage car show and organ recital. But it looks like they have the electrical main mixed in with the organ pipes. Yikes! :bartshock

Paul, I think you're doing the right thing with your Yucca elephantipes plant. It's probably struggling because the previous owner neglected it in a poor spot indoors with little sunlight. Moving out on the balcony where it can get sunlight should be good for it, and the plant is tropical, so it should love your Spanish summer heat. Make sure you give it plenty of water (but don't overdo it, since that's a common way people kill house plants). Also make sure the pot it's planted in has drain holes, with a shallow pan. If it's too large for the pot it's in, you might step it up to a larger size. And maybe a small amount of fertilizer will help. Just be patient with it, and give your Yucca some time to respond. I have found them to be tough, resilient plants. It should do well for you once it has a chance to recover.

(*8*) Good morning, John

Still here. I sleep most of the time and only get out once a week for pew duty. Do not have much to say except to give weather reports.

That Atlantic City organ is a monster. There was a TV special on the restoration. I would love to hear it.

Well. it's time for my weekly excursion to town for pew duty and then shopping at Wallyworld.

The temperature has dropped a little. Only about 108F today.

Time to shower and get to church.

Hello Johnnie
Thanks for the Birthday message

I Hope you have a pleasant New Week

Hi John!

I had brunch yesterday in beautiful Pitman, NJ. It's a sweet small town with shops, restaurants, and a theater along Broadway in the downtown. Even the BAPTISTS there are LGBT alliés.

I hadn't been there in years, but I want to go back soon. The bookstore and Gentle Giant Coffee Shop weren't open Tuesdays. And there were other restaurants I want to try!

Good Friday morning Thad, Loner, Frankie, and Gary! (*8*)

Thad, Pitman New Jersey sounds like a delightful little town. In the North they have the American Baptists, which is more mainstream, almost a completely different denomination than the Southern Baptists, so I'm not surprised that they are welcoming. There are some nice small towns in the South, but if you're gay your enjoyment of them is somewhat limited, as you have to remind yourself, they are not our friends.

Gary, I'm glad you can get out for pew duty and for shopping on Sunday. You need to break your (mostly staying at home) routine once in a while.

This week has been pretty quiet, mostly. I did help out yesterday at the food pantry, which went pretty well. We even had a couple of women come in off the street and offer to volunteer. The young guys came in to help, and it turns out that all charges were dropped against the young man in the concealed carry incident. It sounds like there might be lawsuits coming out of this, including against a local gay rag notorious for sensationalist journalism.

It has been a typical hot, muggy Florida summer. We got a storm Tuesday afternoon, and then it didn't rain on a couple of days that it was predicted to. But there was a good rain early this morning. I haven't done much gardening this week, it's just been too hot to do it. Fortunately the pain in that one tooth is diminishing almost to the point that I'm hardly even aware of it most of the time. So maybe I won't have to do anything else with it after all.

Today is hot here, too ..an excessive heat warning is on until 9 pm. It's currently 93°F but feels like 102°.
I was out early to buy milk at the local Wawa. (Has Wawa come to you yet? I know they moved into FLA.)

Good evening, John.
Thanks for your advice regarding the yuca. I already transplanted it to a bigger pot, and keep it outside.
Actually this summer isn't very very hot here, and we have some storms.

I hope you have a good week (*8*)
