Asians in the Library Youtube Clip - UCLA Girl going wild on Asians

Re: I sent my application to UCLA

The other kind of abuse in libraries are those kids with sinus problems and Ipods.

otitis_eustacian_tube.gif

Their ear plugs block their Eustachian tube which means they have to snort the mucous back and forth in their head. They can't hear the sound of all that snorting mucous because their ears are blocked.

They snort harder and harder so all their fellows on the surrounding tables can hear their mucous.

Re: I sent my application to UCLA

[BearBoi] Of course I've seen the "ching chong" representation as long as I've been alive, but I'm curious, what is the phonetic equivalent in Chinese for "imitating an English speaker"? Just curious, because I've never seen it before. Is it also said as "ching chong" for stereotypically imitating English? I'm also curious whether it's Chinese, or English, or some other language, which has the most different phonemes in it?

The few I’ve heard (in person, at Chinese friend’s houses) have mostly mumble this garbled gibberish with harsh phonic pronunciations of vowel collections that do not exist in Chinese. Also keep in mind that Chinese speech/music uses a Pentatonic Scale while Western speech/music uses Diatonic. So imagine traditional Chinese music trying to imitate (via sound and pitch) Western music. It sounds all wrong, but you can tell what they are trying to do.

This is distinctly different from a non-English speaker trying to phonically imitate the English language by repeating words. What I’m describing is literally gibberish, along the same line as “ching-chong”, only Westernized through their point of view.

It. Is. Hilarious!

So rudeness is worse than racism. Nice to know.

Hey Joan, I'm quietly watching you. I didn't like that thought-crime you committed last October. I'll have to inform the Thought Police if it reoccurs.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Chinese music uses Pentatonic? huh? western speech uses Diatonic? uhhh... What's music got to do with all this anyway?

And if all you hear is "ching chong" when you hear Chinese then I'm sorry you are an idiot. I don't understand Hindi but I can certainly make out more than 2 syllables.

Re: I sent my application to UCLA

You all seem to be attacking the messenger instead of addressing the problem -- Anti-social people annoying others and misusing public places.

Libraries are taxpayer-funded public places. Keep the Noise Outside.

I have no interest in that woman.

[-X

Except that the "message" is the opinion of this woman. Her opinion is racist. She is a racist. Validating her "message" is racism. She brought that opinion into the world and is rightly being judged by it.

Now, if there is a problem with individuals being too loud in the library, I'm sure the library staff can and will handle the situation if properly notified.

frankfrank asked how it sounds when non-English speaking Chinese people ‘mimic’ English.

For your benefit I’ll elaborate:

Chinese music uses a scale called Pentatonic. That is why Chinese music ‘sounds’ Chinese. Western/Most European music is based on the Diatonic scale, which is why it ‘sounds’ the way it does.

This is also true for the tones in which we speak, and sing.

This is part of why the languages sound so different. It isn’t just different words, but a different way of pronouncing and giving intonation to the words.

Now, for example, take two languages with a common root, like English and German. The words sound different of course, but not ‘foreign’ in the way English and Chinese do. That’s because they use the same scale, while English and Chinese do not.

And if all you hear is "ching chong" when you hear Chinese then I'm sorry you are an idiot. I don't understand Hindi but I can certainly make out more than 2 syllables.

"Ching Chong" in this context describes the general tone our [non-Cantonese/Mandarin] ears pick up on, without understanding what we are hearing. To contrast, when non-English speaking Chinese people mimic English, they mash together random vowels and tones that do not exist in their language, which to them ‘sounds’ English… but is really just gibberish.

But hey, I’m an idiot, right? It isn’t as if I’ve attended The Royal Conservatory of Canada, have learned to play Chinese music in the Pentatonic Scale and have a mentor who was born and raised in China.

No, certainly nothing like that at all.

Now, if there is a problem with individuals being too loud in the library, I'm sure the library staff can and will handle the situation if properly notified.

There comes a time when PC bullshit suffers and Epic Fail.

This is one of those times.

If the vast majority of incidences have involved Chinese students, than what is she supposed to say? Pretend that the issue isn’t disproportionately localized to one segment of the student body?

As for tossing around words like "racist": the people I’ve met who are the most racist against Chinese people are… other Chinese people.

Re: I sent my application to UCLA

Just b/c you have Chinese friends doesn't give you a free pass to be a bigot. We all have friends from different cultures and backrounds, but most of us don't use them as excuses for our intolerance of others.

Friends? I have FAMILY who are Chinese. Have you ever been to China? By Western standards many things that are acceptable to them are considered fucking RUDE to us. That’s just a simple fact.

On a side note: I love how quickly PC-loving cry-babies toss out the “b” word without nary a care as to context.

Why is this even relevant to the thread? So b/c some people in China were mean to your friend they're all bad? ](*,)

It was an example about what is considered acceptable there, and what is considered acceptable here.

It does work both ways, but that doesn't make it right for you or the girl in the video to start spewing out hate speech. Maybe take your own advice. if you don't like people calling you on your shit, be a better person.

“Hate Speech.” Stop it, I’m going to wet myself laughing.

She is studying for finals and she can’t hear herself think when [many of] their entire families pack into the complex every weekend to talk, yell, cook all day, hang laundry out the window, have the kids going crazy in the halls...

Maybe you should instead ask why this behaviour is tolerated when everybody is paying the same amount of money to live there for the purpose of going to school and learning, not operating a family-reunion every Saturday and Sunday. If they want to see each other so bad, go to a fucking park. Its MID TERMS and people are trying to work and study.

Granted, she could have phrased her points in a much more politic fashion, and her choice of some words were unfortunate, but I understand her underlying point.

I also wonder if she had been Asian if you’d be so quick to call her racist and a bigot. It’s easy to use those terms when the person has White skin, eh?

And feel free to fly out to Vegas anytime. I'll drive you out to the little China Town we have here. It's the cleanest place in this entire city.

Probably by law.

My city also passed a law when they got fed up with cleaning week-old produce out of the gutters, and the fact that the entire downtown smelled like dead fish.

She's supposed to say, "Excuse me, would you mind not being so loud in the library?" And she should aim this question in the general vicinity of the person that is being loud. None of which has anything to do with race. But that isn't what happened is it? No.
"Ching Chong" in this context describes the general tone our [non-Cantonese/Mandarin] ears pick up on, without understanding what we are hearing.

We may not understand what we are hearing from a speaker of Chinese, but it has been made very clear what is meant by the mocking of the language. The girl in this video could give less of a shit about the differences in the rhythmic structure of languages.

Re: I sent my application to UCLA

Sorry, i didn't realize you had family members that were Chinese. Well by all means please continue to tell us more about how they all act the same horrible way...

But it’s true. A lot of Asian people, especially Chinese (in general, but not all), are fucking rude.

Reading comprehension, much?

And I’ve since amended this statement to reflect the fact that it was comparative to North American standards.

Listen, before you fly off the handle at somebody, reverse the situation and ask yourself if it is still “racist.”

Let’s compare Japan and North America. There are LOTS of things North Americans do every day without thinking about it that are considered extremely RUDE in Japan; from the way you meet and address a stranger, to the tone of your voice when speaking to an authority figure, right down to putting a business man’s card in your pants pocket.

If I went to Japan and acted this way, even if my offences were completely unintentional, and they called me RUDE, even “fucking RUDE”, would they in turn be racist?

No.

And you’d never dream of calling them racist.

Because I have never once spoken about all Chinese people as a people, but rather to comment on the differences between what we find socially acceptable.

And on that level, yes, by North American standards certain things are considered rude here that aren't considered rude there.

Are you serious at this point? I used the term "hate speech" b/c you are using second hand knowledge to lump together an entire country of people into one tiny little stereotype that's convenient for you. Then you spend your time arguing with people here on JUB that almost all Chinese people(except the ones you like) are fucking disgusting to you. What about this do you not get yet?

There are routes she could have taken other than making a public video of her bigotry to solve the problem. Rude people are rude no matter race/culture/sex/etc.

You’re PC bullshit just don’t fly, man.

Let’s look at the China Town trash mess we talked about earlier.

Was it Greek Town that had the problem? No. Was it Little India? No. Was it Little Italy? No.

Get a grip; you can address a factual statement about an issue that is generally indicative of a particular group without being racist.

Actually I would have. Just b/c i'm white doesn't mean i can't be racist towards white people. Hell, Jub gives me enough reasons on the daily to hate all gay people, but the difference between you and me is that i don't let the few people that piss me off shape my views of the whole group.

No. You know what the difference is between you and I? I understand Chinese culture and people. At least, apparently, a hell of a lot better than you do.

A very good friend of mine was born and raised in China, then moved to Canada in her early 20s and went to work for the Canadian Foreign Service throughout Asia. A large part of her job was training non-Chinese to, in her words, “think Chink”.

We aren’t just talking about a few social niceties that are different. We aren’t even talking about language. We are talking about fundamental ways of thinking that are, in some cases, very different. It causes culture clashes which go both ways. That’s what’s happening here, IMO. Tossing around words like “bigot” and “racist” is just a petty knee-jerk response.

Why not take some time to do some soul searching rather than continue to prove my point through your hate filled responses. ..|

You can keep bating me, but I won’t bite.

OMG I love 12 Girl’s Band. The Guzheng is one of my favourite instruments and they feature 2! You almost never see that. Damn you for posting Clocks, now I have to listen to it. I also love their rendition of “Only Time” from the Eastern Energy CD. Do you have it? Fantastic stuff. I actually got a (partially ) autographed copy.

Thanks for posting those examples.

This is old news.

Alexandra was plagued with death threats and transfered out of the university. She did not dare step on campus during finals week as students had gotten hold of her final schedule and contact info online.

Saw this last weekend, could not believe it. She has withdrawn from UCLA, citing personal safety as the reason. It was reported, incorrectly, that she had been expelled.

It was interesting what happened next. She was condemned by some media outlets for her offensive and cruel comments, and for being extremely un-timely in light of the earthquake in Japan (although her comments would have been offensive at ANY time). Others defended her right to free speech and expressed concern over the intensity of the backlash, which has included death threats directed to her and her family.

Facebook, Twitter, blogs, YouTube and other means with which people can instantly communicate any thought to the world seems to have impaired people's ability to have an "inside voice," as insensitive and stupid as it may be. Can she think what she wants? Absolutely. If you decide to post those thoughts, you need to be prepared for what comes.
