Asians in the Library Youtube Clip - UCLA Girl going wild on Asians

the first time i saw that video...i broke my laptop over my knee. someone really needs to teach that girl to stop being ignorant. she just doesn't understand that due to cultural differences (family values/speaking volume), people from different countries just tend to do things differently and it's not her job to force them to change :P

People from different countries need to learn to adapt to the culture of the country they're in. When Americans go to foreign nations, people talk about how insensitive and ignorant we are about other cultures. But when people come HERE, they're just different and no one should get them to change? That's a terrible double standard. The issue with the video is her rampant generalizations made in bad taste; her actual points were quite valid, as it is very rude to talk loudly in a library and having lots of family members running around a dorm could get really obnoxious.

This is old news.

Alexandra was already plagued with death threats and transfered out of the university.

That's really a shame. A bad mistake, a few ignorant comments, and she deserves to die? What the hell is wrong with people? Teach her what she did wrong, call her a stupid bitch, but honestly, running her out of town with death threats? That's terrible.

Change to what? American culture? Last time I checked, American culture was the idea that we are free to do as we please, including keeping up traditions from other cultures... Besides what would you have them do? Model themselves after who? American culture... :rotflmao:

As much as we might like to think so, American culture is definitely NOT based on the idea that we're free to do as we please. Speaking loudly in a public library is not a "cultural tradition," it's just something that is acceptable other places and not here. So yeah, if they're going to live in America, they really should model themselves after our culture at least enough not to piss everyone around them off with their culturally rude actions.

As hilariously terrible as you may consider the U.S. to be, we are still a nation with our own culture and own norms of politeness that shouldn't simply be ignored because "America is stupid and terrible," which is unfortunately a common sentiment among its citizens and foreigners alike.

 Where is it acceptable?

But then again, this isn't about libraries at all...

And more about the fact that a "foreigner" doesn't have to defer to you or anyone...

And....
American culture is definitely NOT based on the idea that we're free

 I've been lied to!

I love the song

"ching chong ling long ... under ponds of make up with blue eyes .."

Oh, I see how it is.

It actually surprises me how many Americans seem to support the idea of freedom and liberty while at the same time wanting to censor and hide away things they don't like. That goes for both republicans and democrats, liberals and conservatives alike.

the problem is she seems to blame ALL asians ... which is not nice.
Look at the video again.

Since you "see how it is", please tell me what it is I'm trying to censor or hide?

If this girl was concerned about people being loud in the library, the correct action would have been to confront the people being loud, or notify the library staff. She did neither.

What you fail to grasp is that America is about freedom... Yeah, that girl has the freedom to say whatever she wants. We know this and we heard her. But know also, that the people she is talking about are equally free to talk in the library, bring relatives to the dorms, and practice any cultural deviation they so choose.

So now tell me again, who is the one being "Un-American"... The person doing what they do, or the one telling them they can't or shouldn't...

How the hell are you equating non-American culture (in this case Asian) = being loud? Just because an Asian dude being loud in a library doesn't mean all Asians are loud. If you want to put it that way then I must say: if there's a loud Asian, there's just an equally loud white or black or hispanic person.

I'm not even going to go into the whole "OUR culture"

What you said is just stupid.

I loved the song. Very satirical and catchy as well. Nothing beats a bit of good satire to get your point across and making UCLA girl look quite stupid (ie she doesn't know the difference between Asian and Japanese).

If you'll read up, it was actually swimmerguy27 who said that being loud and having a lot of relatives around was a trait of Asian cultures, and that the girl should learn to accept their cultural differences.

I replied, saying that if their culture condones being loud in libraries, that doesn't mean it's an acceptable thing to do here. I don't understand how that's stupid. I don't have any idea whether or not being loud in public places IS something that is acceptable in some Asian cultures... it doesn't seem like it to me, but I could be wrong.

I was actually changing the subject there, since your overuse of sarcastic smilies and short, uninformative rebuttals seemed like an obvious attempt at trolling. I guess you were just honestly being annoying.

I am not condoning the girl or what she did. I AM saying that she has a point, and that talking loudly in libraries is rude. Sure, people have the right to do it. People have the right to be assholes in general. Does that mean they should be? No, of course not. It's obnoxious, in my opinion, to be rude just because your native culture is different than the one you're living in. If an American went to Japan and started breaking their cultural norms of politeness, many people (and possibly you) would criticize them for being insensitive to the Japanese culture. It should go the same way for American culture. Yes, a lot of our ideals are based on the notion of being "free", but "freedom and liberty" do not equate to "do whatever the hell you want."

I'm fast becoming a fan of this guy. He does everything !

That's awesome. How he had the time to compose that, write lyrics, and then film each individual part is beyond me... I wonder if he has that on iTunes or something.

The problem is that it is NOT Asian culture to be loud in the library and the assertion in the video that it is is both ignorant and racist.

I was just going off of what swimerguy21 said.

And you know, it could very well be more acceptable to speak on phones in public places in Asia, since their use of cell phones is more widespread and mainstream, with cheaper plans with more unlimited data use. In the U.S, a lot of adults don't even have cellphones, cellphone plans are comparatively expensive and limiting, and using cellphones in public or social situations is considered rude in general.

So yeah, it could well be a cultural thing, I just don't ACTUALLY know. Making an observation based on what you see is not racism, but getting upset at an entire race and then being rude about it is in worse taste.

Re: I sent my application to UCLA

The OP didn't literally apply to UCLA. Decisions came out early, several days before the 14th, this year.
