Hey Jasun, I've been contemplating on whether or whether not I should post this question because of all the times I thought it would just make me look like I'm just trying to shamelessly promote myself but.....in the same vein, I cant think of another way to ask this question which I've been curious about for a while.....

One of my hobbies is writing, and since 2014 I've been working on an adult themed The Sims 3 web series on this site and one of the main characters in my story is a someone who works in gay porn as a side job. What I want to ask you is....Judging from one particular chapter in my book, Chapter 5, Is my portrayal of how the gay porn industry works at least somewhat realistic, or do you think that my idea of how gay porn works is just completely fantastical and can never occur in real life?

not even remotely anything close, no.

there is no mansion filled with hot men who are just paid to hang around. There are no butlers. The staff at Titanmen and every studio I've worked for are all just regular people... most had women working and a lot of straight men. There is no mansion with guys hanging out or working in thongs.

Most of the gay porn stars I know are either professionals who make gay porn for fun and an escape... the other ones are escorts who make porn for raising their profiles and asking prices. None of them are going to bother with doing lap dancing.

There sure aren't any gay porn stars working for studios like the one you described who are gay but pretend to be straight. Honestly, most of the gay porn stars who say they're straight really are straight and none of the ones who are really straight have a Facebook page. there certainly isn't a gay porn star that is secretly gay who's going to be bothered with a whole separate online fantasy profile. What would be the point of that? They don't make money from Facebook.

There would never be a gay porn studio like the one you describe that would give a shit if a gay star was going to come out... honestly, most of us would just think he was lame and not bother hiring him. Who needs all that drama?

A gay porn studio like you describe isn't going to be remotely involved with the public persona of a performer like that. We at Titan will help them manage their social media on the technical side... but not have meetings with them about "should I talk about politics on my Facebook page?"

The studios like Sean Cody and Corbin Fisher who do tell even the gay ones to play straight are nothing like what you describe and those performers aren't allowed to have social media accounts (and most wouldn't want that anyway). Sean and Corbin really do try to only work with straight guys because the gay ones DO want to go out and be a "gay porn star." The situation you're describing is... not going to happen in the real world.

But yours is a fantasy... have your fun. You have a Hugh Hefner character in your book... might as well have some fun.

Thanks for the critique I will admit that during the writing process for my book, I didn't really have the goal of "how do I portray the industry in the most realistic way?" Rather I wanted to create essentially the gay equivalent to Playboy.

Yeah that part is obvious just... story telling.

the thing that makes the least sense is that a mainstream gay porn studio like Raging Stalling, Titan, Hot House... any of them... would want their performers to pretend to be straight. There are a few sites like that that deal in that "straight fetish niche" but they're not run by gay rights activists. And they certainly don't have meetings like that.

That said...it's your story. At least you didn't depict everyone either being total assholes to each other (like they usually do) and everyone on drugs.

well.. we start at about 9AM.

Crew arrives on set (often we're staying in the same house where we're shooting but not always) and starts to set up the lighting gear, set up the cameras and set up the set itself... put chairs, boxes, benches in place... if we're shooting outside we have to put a big scrim together and suspend it over the action to dissipate sunlight or the video will look horrible.

Cast arrives about 10, we get paperwork signed, ID shots taken, I walk them through everything we'll need from them that day... I start taking still pictures for the DVD box covers, banners and promo materials while my crew continues setting up lights and preparing the cameras, drives, monitors and other gear we need.

By 11:30-12, I'm ready to shoot video. we use two cameras but I have to shoot every sexual position from 6 different angles so show off the whole action or the edited video will be boring to watch. Which means we have to get them doing everything the same three times... sometimes even four. We have to constantly adjust lights, adjust audio settings, move gear and deal with guys trying to get hard while all this action is going on around them. I also have to stop periodically to take "action stills" for the promotional packages.

Once we have a good 2 hours of video shot (on hour per camera), sometimes more, I'll usually decide we have enough for the finished scene and we then have to wait for cumshots... this means the actors who've been trying NOT to cum for 6 hours now have to make themselves cum. Some guys can just do it on order... some guys have to wait for their body to catch up with their brains so they can get turned on enough to cum...

Then we have to do our reshoots of things if we need and it takes another hour to tear down all the gear. A day that starts at 9AM often ends at 6 or 7.

I recently read some posts by a former model sort of whining about the industry and he said "a shoot takes 8 hours, it's not real sex" and I've heard this multiple times. Your explanation makes sense; your "8 hours" includes 2 hours of shooting, roughly?

Tops 2 hours, usually less. A good director isn't going to have to fart around trying to get good footage for longer than that.

Pretty much, yes. I'll put the guys under a scrim that's suspended over the action. But I still need a lot of bright fill lights.

That's it. That's your brightest light and unless you're going to say... shoot into the sunset and need to over-light your subject from the front... THEN you need a VERY bright light and a nearly closed aperture or you'll just get shadows and silhouettes.

There was a 70s porn company called Titan, but they aren't related to Titanmen (that's who I work for).

I'd really have to look into it. Joe Gage was making porn in the 70s and so were many, although back then they avoided prosecution by not registering their trademarks and publishing it.. so who owns it and who's still around from those days is dodgy at best.
