Sometimes I wonder if barebacking advocates are part of a right wing conspiracy to get gay men to infect themselves. The more of us who die the less political clout we have and the easier we are to "manage." While I think some barebacking advocates may fall into this category (paranoid freak that I am), I think most people who like to bareback are driven by sheer lust, fetishization of cum, and defiance. I myself am caught between the strong desire to avoid HIV (having had a lot of friends die of it, and seen how poorly people live with it, even on the modern cocktail) and the desire to banish condoms from my life. The risk balance I have chosen is to bareback only in a monogamous relationship with someone I trust, after testing (which in turn must come after a monogamous window period).

But others choose to balance lust with risk in a different place. Their choice is their own, and they have a right to choose a different risk level than I do. That doesn't make them part of a vast conspiracy, either of right-wing people determined to kill gays, or of "condom nazis."

Should we make that a question on the census? "Do you bareback?" If the person says "yes," should the census taker have the authority to just shoot them right there? Once they are dead, should the census taker be able to claim their assets if there is no will, or should the assets go back to everyone else to fund education or health awareness? And how will we find out in years where there is no census?
