An unknown gunman opens fire during the screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, killing 14 dead and injuring 50.

There's some pretty heated incidents running up to the film's debut.

It will be remembered that some fans at Rotten Tomatoes threatened some movie reviewers, leading RT to close the comments section for TDKR.

Sadly it is the crazy season for guns.

threatened? why?

What a waste of human life. And again, I have to ask why are guns that fire off 30 rounds in less than one minute so easily available?

.
Small silver lining in the big cloud: casualty count has been downgraded from 14 to 12. :-)

I direct this question to our Canadian JUBbers: there are lots of guns in Canada, but Canadians don't shoot each other - as is the case of the U.S. Why not?

Part of the answer is that US has a much larger population, so a lot more of everything.

I think we'll find that the shooting took place @ the theatre because it would be a logical place to "take out" many people. I don't think the film will be the reason. I think it could have been any big premier.

As for assault weapons, they're needed for "hunting" according to the NRA.... Don't you know by now that deer attack in herds?

These mass killings piss me off to no end. How do these crazies get these guns?

According to what I just heard on the local news (Boston) CO has VERY liberal gun laws, even AFTER Columbine. Also, & this wasn't confirmed, although Holmes, the shooter is originally from the San Diego area, & has an apt in Aurora CO, his car has TN plates. I don't think gun laws are very stringent in TN either.

This post represents a total misunderstanding of what I said above. And you're a lawyer?

As I was asking...

The Supreme Court should be required to each attend every multiple shooting rampage. May they reflect on their 2nd Amendment decision with heads bowed.

It does happen here...perhaps not as often and you may not always hear about them. There was a mass shooting this week in a Toronto suburb and last month another in a Toronto food court at a large downtown shopping centre

Generally, in Canada, these shootings are gang attacks and, sadly, innocent bystanders often get caught in the middle

On a per capita basis??????

In 2000 Canada had a homicide rate of 1.58 per 100,000. The US rate was 4.55.

But sadly Chris.....Toronto has seen a savage new gang war over the last few months.

Gun violence is viral.

I read about it and this is sadly one of those cases where people around him knew he would "snap" but probably could not stop it. Such a shame he had to take it out on other people.

The way mental health laws are in this country, the only way to get someone committed these days is to wait for them to attack someone.
As for gun laws,Colorado law allows people to carry conceled weapons. Maybe the reason someone didn't have one is because they didn't think they would need to bring it to a movie.

Probably wouldn't have helped too much in this instance. The suspect had a Kevlar helmet, vest a gas mask and tear gas. You'd have to be an exceptional shot to neutralize this kind of threat.

I just watched the press conference and didn't get the answer I was looking for. I have to ask, did they think the man was just in costume to see the movie? The chief described what he was wearing and, while I know hindsight is 20/20, what on earth did they think was the reason for the getup?
