Batman premiere shooting, 14 dead

Probably wouldn't have helped too much in this instance. The suspect had a Kevlar helmet, vest a gas mask and tear gas. You'd have to be an exceptional shot to neutralize this kind of threat.
Indeed..but you wouldn't know that from all the John Waynes out there. I'm well aware of the 71 year old man who had a weapon and knew how to use it stopping a robbery last week. THis is a heck of a lot different from that.

My Heart & Prayers go out to all the Aurora citizens...When I heard the news early this morning I got sick on the stomach. I'm a Lifetime Movie fanatic and I've gone to many Midnight showings. I know the anticipation they felt before the movie started. For years now It has NEVER crossed my mind that an Insane individual would think about terrorizing a theatre full of movie-goers...

I'm not going to let this horrific incident stop me from going to Midnight showings in the future but you better believe I will be more aware of my surroundings and observe people a bit more than usual...

.
Small silver lining in the big cloud: casualty count has been downgraded from 14 to 12. :-)

I direct this question to our Canadian JUBbers: there are lots of guns in Canada, but Canadians don't shoot each other - as is the case of the U.S. Why not?

Yeah sure - shooting in Toronto lately ..happens here too but not on the scale of the states. Colorado for some reason has more than fair share of these attacks.
I don't have an answer to your question though it may have to do with urbanization??

No evidence The Tea Party had any thing to do with it. ABC was forced to back down.

It's even worse than had been first reported. He even had ballistic shinguards and one on his throat. He was essentially armored up head to toe. Nothing that comes out of a handgun would have had much effect on him. You'd need a rifle round to pierce his defenses. Most folks don't go to the movies with rifles, so there was precious little that even someone who was legally armed could have done.

And I saw that clip of the old guy shooting the bad guy in the ass! That was great!

The Teabaggers and the NRA are nowhere to be found. I said it, when they do their destruction, they MIA when people are killed.

They had nothing to do with it. The dinosaur media immediately floated the Tea Party angle, claiming some 55 year old Hispanic gentleman may have been the shooter. They've been made to look like fools, just as those who claimed Loughner to have Tea Party ties did a year and a half ago. But please, keep trying. You may get it right one day eventually.

I just watched the press conference and didn't get the answer I was looking for. I have to ask, did they think the man was just in costume to see the movie? The chief described what he was wearing and, while I know hindsight is 20/20, what on earth did they think was the reason for the getup?

He had dyed his hair red or orange and told the police he was the joker.

The only politics behind this tragic event is the easy availability of firearms to just about anyone without restriction.

"In America, there has been, for so long now, the belief that guns designed to kill people indifferently and in great numbers can be widely available and not have it result in people being killed indifferently and in great numbers. The killings will go on. The cell phones in the pockets of dead children will continue to ring."

-Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker

I think I will delay my plans to see this movie for a week. It would be just to depressing to go see it this weekend, so soon after this horrible event. Give the chance for the crowds to settle down too.

The shooter was a post-graduate medical student in a Neurosurgery doctorate program at the local university. He was a unusually quiet student according to his professors and had no record of legal or mental problems. The only legal issues he had was a speeding ticket. He had recently voluntarily withdrawn from his classes. He was wearing body armor and a gas mask, set off tear gas or some other irritant weapon and/or smoke grenades before he started shooting. He died his hair red and told the police he was The Joker, the arch-nemesis of Batman. He had wired his apartment with what appears to be a sophisticated high explosive or chemical device so the police haven't been able to enter it yet.

When I first started hear the details of this story I said, the shooter is going to be some nut who thinks he is a super villain. Turns out that seems to be right. He seems to be an intelligent person who went, to use the medical term, freaking whacko nuts with little or no warning signs.

I think we'll find that the shooting took place @ the theatre because it would be a logical place to "take out" many people. I don't think the film will be the reason. I think it could have been any big premier.

As for assault weapons, they're needed for "hunting" according to the NRA.... Don't you know by now that deer attack in herds?

Agreed. When you pick a place to make a statement or get your 15 minutes you go for effect. Now where else in the suburbs of Denver are more people packed late on a weeknight in the summer if not a midnight movie release? The type of film matter not.

Contrary to boss blow hog Rush trying to unite Bain the bad thing in the movie with Romney cause the comic with bain goes back to the 1990's.

I'm not for taking away guns but logically there is a problem only a non-critical thinker couldn't agree when you look at the murders done routinely at Postal facilities, McDonald's, Jewish day care centers, Ft hood, etc.............
We realize we need cars however look at the effort to stomp down and make drunk driving a sinister crime but we don't out law cars just make it more difficult to get away with committing crimes best we can with tough laws.
This will never happen with gun laws though which in a incident like yesterday can take out more at a time then most drunk drivers would. They should be equal.
A car is a proper machine, and cars don't kill people like guns, well maybe they do?

Ride that johnny reb flag and out out dated 1700's bullshit. Now is not then. Things should change and we in the USA could still keep our guns. The conservetard dinosaur must die out.

Teabaggers and the NRA are against any type of gun control which probably could have saved a lot of lives if this nut never got the guns LEGALLY in the first place.

Do you remember the Columbine Shooting, which happened pretty near today's shooting? Not even a week later, the NRA commenced a trade show nearby to sell guns.

They're completely destructive.

The media here interviewed personnel at a theater here and was told about the exit doors. They are solid steel and built into a Concrete wall. There is no way for anyone to bust it open from the outside.
Little did they know he was in the theater and took a phone call, from what I read, and went outside from the exit door. Propped it open and came back in when he was loaded.

if this nut never got the guns LEGALLY in the first place.

As reported by CNN: "Law enforcement sources said the weapons were purchased legally by Holmes at sporting goods stores in the Denver area over the past six months."

No doubt he is a nut. But so far authorities are having difficulty finding any kind of dirt on his past.

If employers can give an MMPI (a psych assessment) to applicants, gun shops should do the same to gun owners. You can't game an MMPI. These questions and their answers give you the likelihood of mental illness. It will ask you a question like, "Do you prefer hardwood or tiled floors?" People who are depressed, bi-polar or have another significant mental illness choose one over the other more often than not. This or a similar test should be administered to gun applicants.

What a waste of human life. And again, I have to ask why are guns that fire off 30 rounds in less than one minute so easily available?

It's needed go animal hunting, of course! Deer and bear trophies look much better when they're covered with dozens of bullet holes, you see.

(If you believe that, I also have a tower in Paris to sell you)

It is too late to dig dirt about people's past.
Gun sellers have to ask why people need these guns, but they won't ask, they want to make money. Very strict gun law is the only way to reduce mass killings.

That murderous little fartknocker wants to pretend to be the Joker? Fine. Let's throw him in a dark room and get a guy in a black rubber bat suit to beat the living shit out of him.
