Batman premiere shooting, 14 dead

What if we make the rule of "to bear arms" that the rifle is like it was in 1776. Single shot, ram powder and ball down the barrel.

A cute and utterly useless talking point that some folks like to dredge up. For one the Amendment itself would prohibit such a restriction. Two, even if you use the most restricted interpretation of the amendment that gun control advocates embrace that it relates to the state's ability to form a militia only, the restriction would defeat the purpose, a militia formed today with such weapons would be almost totally useless.

you could of course just repeal the amendment. maybe even replace it with a "disarmament" amendment.

times change, as such laws often need to change. That's the whole point of this endless debate. Someone singlehandedly committing a massacre with a gun was unheard of over 220 years ago; it practically, and logically, was not possible with that type of weaponry. There was no reason for the founding fathers to consider that when ratifying the bill of rights.

Nobody is saying that today's "militias", or anyone, should be equipped with muskets only. . . isn't that obvious enough for you to avoid taking this "cute" argument literally? This "cute and utterly useless talking point" that folks dredge up obviously is making the point that this right is outdated and needs updated to specifically address civilian use of high powered weapons. The debate will always be endless as long as people insist on avoiding the fact that the second amendment is outdated. It was written for the late 18th century, not for the 21st century. I know that sounds blasphemous to some, but judging from our problems with today's reality, it is a simple fact. These problems did not exist 220 years ago.

So my question stands then. In modern day first world country, why does one need militias?

Ah yes, I forgot. Because random randomers always know better than government and actual institutions, always can do better and should always be involved with everything ever.

Well for one thing, using a militia model instead of standing armies, you wouldn't need a massive military industrial complex and it would be a LOT harder to invade foreign countries on a whim.

What would or could be doesn't matter. The point is there IS a massive military industrial complex. What's more relevant, there is strong police presence everywhere in the US. So again - why do we need militias?

Why ask the question if you going to ignore the answers? We don't need militias because we have a standing army, which the founders didn't really want. I simply pointed out a benefit of going back to a militia model instead of a standing army.

I am ignoring only the "because wouldn't life be beautiful if..." answers. Militias are pointless, unnecessary and almost vigilante in today's first world reality. Yet guns exist in disgusting abundance, and militias are given as an excuse for it. So...

So why are even following this line of discussion, given that chances of eliminated guns from American society is almost nil given both the numbers and social history, arguing that we need to get rid of guns in our society is essentially a 'wouldn't life be beautiful if...' debate.

Just watching Meet The Press, and they said that police arrived within 90 seconds ..............

and he still got 71 shot

jesus christ

My Dad was all pissed off!

"How could they let some fucker wearing a gas mask, a bullet proof vest, and what amounted to more than police riot gear into that theater?"

I had to explain to him that it was the "Mid Night" before "block buster" Friday, and that a lot of fans were wearing some sort of costume for the Midnight showing of the movie.

My Dad's response?

"Well that's fucked up...."

"...and so that we're clear I didn't approve of you wearing fishnets, blue eye shadow, a laced teddy, and platform shoes to that midnight showing of Rocky what the fuck back in the 80's either."

And my response?

"There ya go, you never know what's going to happen. Thanks Dad! Did that put things into perspective for you?"

And Dad was like, "Yeah, and you only turned out Gay, and not some fucker who killed a lot of people."

To quote Ceile in the Color Purple, "Dear God."

Actually he was wearing plain clothes when he went into the theater, after the show started he pretended that he receiving a cell phone call and walked down to the emergency exit in the theater, propped the door open and changed into the body armor and weapons he had cached outside.

That's the same argument that my Dad would have made.

Actually militias are quite useful. Even in large cities, police forces are fairly small compared to the population. So there is a need for an armed populace to assist in times of emergency. It's better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them.

This sounds very... crazy...

You have the police, the fire brigade, the army, all sorts of trained men and women whose job it is to deal with emergencies. Civilians have no business in this whatsoever.

No, it's better to not have them and therefore not make a situation where emergencies occur cause everyone is armed...

The last national emergency we had was 9/11, and if I recall correctly, the police, firemen, EMTS and military were the ones helping the survivors, clearing the rubble and finding the bodies. Militias didn't do jack shit.

I can't wait to find out how Pounds & Pounds of Ammunition was delivered to The University of Colorado in the Name of James Holmes and why it didn't raise any flags....

Some of his old friends say he was a Loner but did he ever have a girlfriend or boyfriend? He was very Smart in school, besides the Orange hair he's not a bad looking guy..You'd think he wouldnt have a problem dating and had enough going for himself to lead a productive life...
