Re: Should Bradley Manning aka the Shit Starter Recieve the Death Penalty?
The case of Bradley Manning is actually quite complicated. Before I begin, it's important to realize that everyone citizens is innocent until proven guilty.
If Manning supposedly leaked the infamous video showing US soldiers killing Iraqi civilians and medical workers, then his actions were absolutely valid. The killing of civilians is a serious war crime and we the people must be aware of our governments involvement. From this perspective, its the soldiers who committed these heinous acts that should be sentenced. I cannot emphasize the how important exposing the killing innocent civilians is. This is basically akin to our generation's My Lai Massacre in Vietnam.
Manning is also accused of leaking vast amounts of state department cables. The government claims that this is putting lives of US forces at risk, but the only damage the cables have done is to embarrass the US State Dept. Until there is some actual proof that the leaked cables have seriously threatened Americans lives, I think that calls for Manning's execution are way overblown.
I also don't appreciate the smear article ran by the New York Times outing Manning and over-emphasizing the role of his homosexuality as the reason for his supposed crime. It really cast a black eye on our gay soldiers and vets, many whom have served admirably with no record of misconduct.
In my opinion, I don't think he's guilty at all. However, the government is targeting a lot of Manning's support activists with unwarranted search and seizure, which I am not interested in being a part of. I only ask that my fellow jubbers make a careful and thoughtful decision regarding Bradley Manning. Things aren't always as black and white as they seem.
