Re: Should Bradley Manning aka the Shit Starter Recieve the Death Penalty?

The case of Bradley Manning is actually quite complicated. Before I begin, it's important to realize that everyone citizens is innocent until proven guilty.

If Manning supposedly leaked the infamous video showing US soldiers killing Iraqi civilians and medical workers, then his actions were absolutely valid. The killing of civilians is a serious war crime and we the people must be aware of our governments involvement. From this perspective, its the soldiers who committed these heinous acts that should be sentenced. I cannot emphasize the how important exposing the killing innocent civilians is. This is basically akin to our generation's My Lai Massacre in Vietnam.

Manning is also accused of leaking vast amounts of state department cables. The government claims that this is putting lives of US forces at risk, but the only damage the cables have done is to embarrass the US State Dept. Until there is some actual proof that the leaked cables have seriously threatened Americans lives, I think that calls for Manning's execution are way overblown.

I also don't appreciate the smear article ran by the New York Times outing Manning and over-emphasizing the role of his homosexuality as the reason for his supposed crime. It really cast a black eye on our gay soldiers and vets, many whom have served admirably with no record of misconduct.

In my opinion, I don't think he's guilty at all. However, the government is targeting a lot of Manning's support activists with unwarranted search and seizure, which I am not interested in being a part of. I only ask that my fellow jubbers make a careful and thoughtful decision regarding Bradley Manning. Things aren't always as black and white as they seem.

Re: Should Bradley Manning aka the Shit Starter Recieve the Death Penalty?

Coming from a eruopean country the United Kingdom removed the death penalty from the statute books in 1965 since that time there have been numerous public
pardons because later evidence has show that an innoccent person has been sent to the gallows.

I personaly know that i could not vote for murder by the state am sure that i will get the usual you dont even live here replies ,i am sorry but 2 wrongs dont make a right.

Oh but of course only those wimpy Europeans make mistakes. God's own country would never kill an innocent man.

Manning has had enormous personal problems, for which he could not seek help while in the military because it would have required him to reveal his sexuality.

It is entirely possible that this whole "Wikileaks" scandal would not have happened, had not the US military required soldiers to be dishonest.

Re: Should Bradley Manning aka the Shit Starter Recieve the Death Penalty?

Sorry, but anyone wanting Manning executed if guilty cannot under any circumstance bitch about Sharia law from now on.

I trust that some chaplains wouldn't have revealed it, but that would have been sort of gambling -- it wouldn't surprise me if right-wing chaplains have little regard for confidentiality or the traditional "seal of the confessional". A Catholic priest I knew always started counseling sessions with confession -- then didn't conclude the office/ritual until the counseling session ended, thus putting the content of the session not only under professional confidentiality but religious as well. But I suspect that such men are rare in the military.

Re: Should Bradley Manning aka the Shit Starter Recieve the Death Penalty?

As if the bible is any better or worse than Sharia law. Tomato / tomatoe.

So Manning leaked the Bible?!

Wow.

Not even the Republicans want to make the Bible the law of the land. Though if they were actually literate enough to read the thing, that wouldn't be a bad idea -- they'd actually have to take care of the poor and homeless and disabled and orphans and widows instead of pretending they do. Might be interesting to have a government that required them to love mercy, accomplish justice, and be humble.

And they sure wouldn't be calling for the death penalty -- at least, I never found a part that says, "Go, therefore, killing in My Name" -- but it does say, "the way you judge others is the way you'll be judged".

Not at all.

Has any of the leaked information caused anyone harm? No.

We should throw him a ticker-tape parade.

I tend to feel that way, too.

The Bible says, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." The principle remains the same: Manning and Wikileaks dumped us a lot of truth. We can't help but be at least a little freer for it.

I'm impressed, and even encouraged.

Father Jim was impressive. I don't remember the exact words, but I was present once when a policeman came to try to find out some things about one of the Roman Catholic students on campus. The officer said, "I'd like to know about [name]". Father Jim waited, saying nothing, until the officer said, "Excuse me, but I asked you a question." Father Jim's response was something like, "Actually, you made a statement. I appreciate you sharing that you'd like to know about [name]. I'll pray for you."

I've never heard a better way to tell a cop to STFU and get lost.

Re: Should Bradley Manning aka the Shit Starter Recieve the Death Penalty?

I don't think it's that important. After all, what Wikileaks said are no news for an informed non-American citizen. It's just a general idea of how much the US government likes to stick its nose in other countries' affairs, something which has been vox populi since at least the early 20th century. In Latin America in particular, we've known for over a century. Now, for the American public opinion, it can be news. It only shows that the US government aren't exactly cute little bunnies.

To be honest, it has always surprised me how uninformed of their own government's foreign policy Americans tend to be.

I think it also reveals just how much into secrets the government is, classifying crap that's about as interesting as the directions on a box of condoms.

Aren't you glad Bradley Manning's Ego Didn't Jeopardize OBL Death?

Yes, imagine if those leaks identified the capture or any intelligence used to locate OBL... some of the earlier wikileaks included names of informants and on-the-ground assessments of OBL's possible location from troops.

We can at least agree that his actions were futile and potentially dangerous to our mission I'm Afghanistan.

Ps: I know the intelligence stream starting in august 2010. However they learned the actual names of the couriers used to track OBL earlier.

They knew there were leaks within the pakistan gov't so this info was guarded above and beyond... I dont think he could have gotten the info, but if he had?

I believe you are right. In the end, if this had been leaked, he would have avoided being killed as he has done for ten years.

This seems to be the first ellement of success that Obama applied to the mission that the other two presidents who hunted Obama did not.... he assumed Osama had friends in Pakistan's millitary that were helping Osama and he cut their information flow off.

within a year of that decision, we had him.

It wasn't invading a nation that made this possible... it was just receiving and controlling information.

This was the first thing my dad said about this. (You should know that my dad didn't support the war in Iraq, was no fan of Bush, and generally does not like either party)

His words were: 'How amazing that in this day and age they were able to keep it secret. Can you imagine what would have happened had that little jerk Private, or that Wikileaks jackass would have leaked this? It proves that they really don't understand the consequences of leaking the information that they do'.

Now, coming from my dad, that is about as strong as you can get. He wasn't against earlier Wikileaks leaks, but the fact that they could have put over 10 years of intelligence in jeopardy with one leak really ticked him off.

Re: Aren't you glad Bradley Manning's Ego Didn't Jeopardize OBL Death?

It is an odd line between patriotically employing your right and duty to speak out against any wrongs you see in the military and by contrast not knowing what your doing and being manipulated by a media whore to the deteriment of your own country.

Perhaps that was another reason why they chose a SEAL team to execute. Those guys are the most secretive group of professionals I have ever worked with in the last 20 years.

I hope we learned that sharing every thought we have may not be the best idea.
