Bush tax cuts extended for two years.

I love the "let them eat cake" attitude from some of these people.

Republicans claim to subscribe to the "Christian" way of thinking, but not when it comes to making sure the poor and working class get a break. That's when their true nature rears it's ugly head. It's every man for himself.

It's the American way of thinking now. As long as I get mine, then fuck the rest of you.

Weren't the right wingers screaming to anyone who would listen about the deficit before the elections? Now they've forgotten about it.

Which is why I wonder if the best method government and financial leaders could apply to address the inadequacies in the economy is to change the economic landscape to make investments in the 'instruments' less desirable over investing in manufacturing and actual production. Wealth redistribution through taxation does not seem to be the best method.

It's wealth redistribution only if it's used to actually do something; at that point it's only wealth redistribution in an indirect sense, since it's being paid as wages and for purchases.

Who said anything about redistributing wealth?

We have bills to pay! The Bush tax cuts for the riches caused a net loss of $700 billion.

Stardreamer, the tax cuts don't pay for themselves!

A certain amount of wealth distribution may be a good idea, if for no other reason than that it can keep people in a condition to be able to work when work is available -- an effect one could compare to the Laffer curve for actual effectiveness (my bet: it's useful in a broader range of conditions).

But really, it isn't wealth redistribution until the deficit is gone and the old bills -- the debt -- are being paid down at a rapid rate.

They also reveal that they're not conservatives. Conservatives would first do what was necessary to balance the budget, then seek to slash spending, putting the results against the debt -- because conservatives don't believe in having debt.

So, stealing money from the rich, to give to the poor slobs who don't contribute a whit to society, and who will spend it on rent, Pepsi and Cheetos...

That will solve society's ills.

Thank you, amateur economist.

YES, that will stimulate the economy far more than giving it to the rich will!

That's why the non-partisan CBO said extending unemployment benefits will have the largest short term impact on economic health of any option available.

That is because the poor are almost guaranteed to spend that money in the economy, creating demand (and therefore jobs) for products and services.

The rich are nowhere near as guaranteed to spend it.

The poor will spend it or pay bills. I saw an article recently where some people admitted that people paying bills actually does help the economy, it just doesn't get goods moving -- what it does is make it easier to get goods moving.

At this point, giving everyone who's behind on a mortgage a free one-month payment for Christmas would do wonders for the economy, too.

BTW, let's be honest -- it isn't "giving it to the rich", because it was taken from them. But it does constitute granting them a windfall.
