The british 'royal' family exists only because of the lurid publicity and eyebrow raising attention that gains them both censure and sympathy. If they didn't have curb appeal for the the shallow minded celebrity worshipers and the middle class tradesmen who aspire to be noticed by royalty at some garden party event in order to validate themselves somehow....the entire lot of them would have been rendered invisible and proven their irrelevancy.

BTW. Germany used to have a royal family. So did Austria and Hungary. And let's not forget France. And Greece. And Russia. And China. And Belgium. And Czechoslovakia. And Italy. And Yugoslavia. And a whole bunch of others. That was reality too.

The british(german) royals do not exist as royals because they exist. They exist as royals purely at the pleasure and whim of the people. Victoria and QEII managed to make the royal house keep functioning and considered relevant as useful because of the wealth of experience they provided to the successive governments of the day simply because they were able to reign for decades.

But even in Victoria's time and then in Edward's time and before George took the throne just on the edge of WWII...the british monarchy has been under threat.

The greatest threat to the stability of the hanoverian/saxe-cobourg gotha dynasty will be the relatively short time that Charles will have on the throne....without the love of the people....he will be regarded as a stand-in functionary while everyone salivates over the possibility of the celebrity feeding frenzy once Wills gains the throne.

The merry house of battenburg-windsor literally only exists because of the celebrity they cultivate and convincing just enough fangirlboys to keep them as relevant as the Kardashians.
