Can we finally merge "Black" & American History?

Re: Can we finally merge "Black" & American Histor

There's no point in acknowledging it if it's going to be deflect with "well everybody suffers."

The same reason handicapped people get ramps, though the situation is a bit more intricate than that. If you read my OP at all, you'd see I'm not entirely pro-black advantage. I am supporting the retraction of Black History Month here.

This isn't about one person, it's about a group of people.

So are you only bothered by lack of professionalism when it's only minorities or are you convinced that minorities get jobs they don't deserve at a higher rate than whites?

Easier said than done. When people are discriminated against they don't take too kindly to it, do nothing and you upset one group, do something and you upset the other. I started this same thread on a black forum and you should see the hell I caught. If I were a weak-minded person I'd have hung myself at some of the things that were said about me, where I should go, and what should happen to my mother.

Anywho, there's a discordance here. You acknowledge discrimination and unfair practices, but you cherrypick how it's dealt with and who you recognize. People getting jobs they don't deserve is in no way limited to affirmative action or minorities.

Just look at corporate America which is FULL of rich people who are rich and have great jobs and education just because of who their dad is, where they grew up, or who they know. There is barely any legislation against that.

I'm not defending it, I just acknowledge that that's the way race works. Don't blame me, blame the faulty, inaccurate construct and decades of superficial guidelines.

I will sign myself over to you as a lifelong, no holds barred, anything goes sex slave if you can accomplish one of the following:

1. Find 5 articles or commentaries that portray Obama in a stereotypically white manner or play into his Irish heritage; jokes about him drinking a lot, comical pics of him with a golf club in one hand and Garth Brooks cd in the other, jokes about him paying his bills on time, bad dancing, etc....

He's been a public figure for years and every (not some, not most, EVERY) satire piece about him I've read plays to his black side. No jokes about casseroles or anything remotely identifiable as white.

2. Take this picture around and find 5 people who would guess that he's white, not black. I'll be nice and won't impose a time limit. Good luck.*snickers* Keep in mind the picture does NOT accurately portray his skin tone so if no one identifies him as white, there's gotta be another reason.

You're displaying the same indifferent attitude that created the need for this bullshit month in the first place. "Meh, they be aight" has NEVER worked. "It could always be worse" and "You're not the first to suffer" are $2 answers for $1,000,000 questions. It's intellectually lazy and socially irresponsible.

I was comparing disadvantages and response to said disadvantages. Some people would say it's a waste of time and resources building ramps so handicapped people can get into comedy clubs and restaurants, both of which are forms of liesure, not a need. The social, psychological, and economic damage of slavery is considered trivial though the effects are right in front of our eyes. (Assuming you even know and correctly interpret what you're looking at).

And then people bitch about the laws that are supposed to deal with it.

Oh okay, that solves that then. Except sexual orientation isn't protected under EEOC. A gay hotel worker was LEGALLY fired "for being gay." (Notice the direct quotes).

Re: Can we finally merge "Black" & American Histor

I completely agree that Black History and American History need to be merged.

It's like the whole "Separate, but Equal" thing. Do we want to be known as a society, together ... as a whole?

Or are we content each being separate, individual groups?

Re: Can we finally merge "Black" & American Histor

Because you're fixated on one aspect of the comparison. In both cases, the characteristic is a disadvantage. In both cases, there's a response to the disadvantage. In only one of the cases is the response met with scrutiny.

I agree, with Obama being elected out of left field, I feel like Americans are behind our own ideals. For decades we've claimed to be desegregated but we still segregate American history. Getting rid of this separation is one step closer to convincing Americans that we're all equal (which is something many still don't believe. Why? Because we still separate).

Inclusion would also subdue the STRONG, often-expressed sentiments that blacks haven't contributed to this country. Many people are only aware of what they see on TV, on Cops, they don't realize how many items they use that were invented by blacks, the assumption seems to be that any comfort in life, anything intellectual is rooted in white America. The bad stuff, the welfare, the crime, that's all black people.

This ain't shit. We went on a few tangents but this is the Garden of Eden compared to some of the threads above and below.

And at the risk of sounding predispositional, I'm glad everyone seems to agree with me. I made this thread on a black forum and they are hell-bent on keeping this baseless, pointless holiday, they enjoy being patronized and minimalized and segregated. It didn't surprise me, we Americans have a lust for empty traditions and cling to them like oxygen.

Seriously you need to see some of the responses, you'd think I proposed throwing blacks into gas chambers. What frustrated me is they completely fixated on the "no more holiday" aspect and ignored the fact that it's merging black history with American history AKA 8 months of "black" history as opposed to one.

black history month is outdated....its pathetic in my opinion....i can hand someone a book in november and they will learn more than in february....its pointless...no need for feeling powerful for a month

on the tangents in this thread.....some seem to think that dissent is just dissent..... and doesnt cause change

Re: Can we finally merge "Black" & American Histor

no need for feeling powerful for a month

I was with you up until that part. That one knocked the figurative wind outta me but I'll just assume I'm misinterpreting it.

Re: Can we finally merge "Black" & American Histor

Yay, semantics! Okay, I restate, slavery has presented unique CHALLENGES to the black community.

It's like people who wait 'til Valentine's Day to say "I love you" then resume taking their lover for granted on February 15th.
