Computer Upgrade Help!

Hello I'm back, I've been dying to ask this question.

Okay I came to the conclusion that I need memory, a video card, and possibly a power supply.

I'm afraid to even open my computer. But I was mainly wanting memory at first, I searched and it told me I had two 512MB PC2 4300 (266MHz) memory sticks, which came up to 1GB of RAM. 256MB of memory was used though for the Integrated video card. So I thought okay all I need to do was find those type of memory sticks and insert like a two 1GB memory sticks o I can have 3GB of memory. That would come up to like over 100 dollars.

Then I needed a video card, a PCI-Express video card, when I looked online for them, they said they it requires a 400watt power supply, and I looked online for information on what type of power supply I had, I read a review somewhere about my computer that inside the computer contained a 330watt power supply. So I looked everywhere for one and this is where I'm stumped.

I pretty much need to buy a Powerful power supply in order to upgrade a nice video card into my system? I've seen video cards that were 256MB PCI-Express video cards and they say that I need a 300 watt power supply, so would that be a good choice? Can anyone recommend some video cards that aren't over 200 dollars that will be able to work on a 300watt power supply?

i would say get rid of that ram and get some DDR2 667mhz or 800 mhz 2 1 gb sticks

as for the graphics card nvidia 8600 gts would be good but you will need a bigger power supply but they are quite cheap i would go with 550 w since you may want to upgrade in the future

since i know you have an AM2 board and cpu you should be able to upgrade the cpu in a year or 2 since AMD are keeping everything compatible

Well I don't want to upgrade anything higher due to money, I found some nice memory that is around 50 bucks. 1GB of RAM.

I also found a video card that will be great for me and no need of a power supply.

A 300w PSU isn't great Brandon but if your budget doesn't allow you to upgrade then you'll have to make do. I'm not sure about your proposed memory configuration as some mobos won't let you add memory like that - some mobos insist that all your modules are identical so my next question is what is the make/model of your PC and if it's home built then what's the make/model of the mobo?

So yes on the PNY memory from Amazon? I don't want to buy memory and it fuck up my motherboard. :(
 
What is the bus speed? You may not get significant speed improvements just by putting in really fast ram. You may find these peeps helpful http://www.tigerdirect.com/
As far as a video card yours is 256. Mine is 32. Why would you need to change that out? Adding memory is likely the most cost effective way of improving performance. Noellie might correct me on this but going beyond 2 gigs of ram with a 32 bit OS is a waste of money

I upgraded from 1.5 gigs to 2 recently by pulling a pair of 256 modules and replacing with a 1 gig module. The speed difference was noticable. Ram specified for my 'puter is PC2700 and I installed 4200. When I booted, I checked *about this Mac* under memory and it showed 2 gig of 2700. Who knew? Anyway mine is 5 years old and has never missed a day of work.
 
I'm not wanting RAM to speed up my computer, I'm using it because I want to open more programs and games that will be exceeding over 512MB. I usually play games and I'm left with 98MB left on the RAM resources. So I wanted something that would run a game and still be able to have extra RAM left to run other applications.

Thank you for the suggestions though, it looks like I need to know the video card now.
 
I like the first link, but I'm scared about it not working on my Power Supply. I hate to upgrade my power supply meaning adding more money.

You prolly don't keed more ram. If your puter is swapping files to the HD then you have too many open apps.

Try to find out how many watts the new video card takes compared to the old one. These things tend to get more efficient as technology improves so there may be litle difference. If you dont exceed your power supply bymax 5% you should be ok with the power supply. They are cheap anyway. Just make sure the puter gets lots of air and the inside and fan blades are clean.

Believe me I needed the more RAM, I do think that I'm having problems with the new RAM that I just recently bought because I'm having CRC errors when unzipping ZIP and RAR files, so maybe it would be a good idea to buy another RAM stick of the same one, and pull out the PC2-4200 RAM sticks so they're not conflicting with each other. Someone said the reason of the CRC errors are because the FSB doesn't match with the memory. I used CPU-Z to show the memory. The 1st and 2nd Slot are the same memory while the 3rd slot is the new memory.

The memory works, but it just has some weird problems, not sure if it's conflicting with the older memory or do I need to buy the same memory.

But...if your PC is booting up okay and reporting the correct amount of RAM I can't see it causing problems with zip/rar files. I recently fixed a Dell PC and the owner had bought 512mb of RAM to add to his 256mb - he got two speeds and the PC wouldn't boot up so I removed his 256mb and it worked just fine.

If your RAM chips were conflicting you would get random errors all over the place and even blue screens but I'd like a second or third opinion on that.

I've often downloaded zip/rar files several times only to get CRC errors (with the same files over and over again) and it turned out that the original files on the server were corrupt.

Okay so I'll remove the 512MB memory sticks and see if that is causing the problem, I just got a few issues with Skype, plus my Internet stops after like I use it for 11 minutes. So it might be the RAM sticks conflicting with each other.

Configuration 1: If you take out your new RAM are you still getting CRC errors with those SAME zip/rar files?

Configuration 2: If you put in your new RAM ONLY do you still have CRC errors with those SAME zip/rar files?

If you get errors with both then it's probably not the RAM but it's not 100% as your mixed RAM may have caused the problems with the zip/rar files in the first place - so then you need to download other zip/rar files and see what happens with both configurations.

Remember that shutting down your PC while swapping the RAM may actually fix certain issues (especially internet ones).

I'm downloading a RAR file to see the CRC errors.

Weird thing is that when I had the new RAM stick only that my Internet went out like in a matter of 3 minutes. I have the old RAM sticks in now and it seems to be working fine. So I'm not sure, last night I had both the new and old sticks in there and the Internet worked fine.

Brandon, Make sure the memory is inserted securely. You may also have defective ram. Hope you got it from a reputable outfit. Does windoze have a memtest.app?
 
So if something is wrong with it, does that mean I have to buy a new memory stick? Also if the memory was defective wouldn't it not work?
