Dealing with homophobia in America

GhostMost buddy what dictionary are you using , the gobbedlly book of phrases ?Getting in someones face for calling you a faggot you call that immoral ?
Defending yourself from being gaybashed you call that immoral ?
Inciting violence yes i agree with you there i would call that immoral .
Insulting and profanities in this context mean the same thing buddy . #-o

I'm sorry I should have put a disclaimer on the bottom saying "it depends on what you think is immoral." In no way does that mean I'm saying being gay is immoral, that's just stupid to accuse me of. In my opinion being gaybashed, or from my experience, is just insults or dirty looks, I'm not going to get up in the person's face and say PUNCH ME ASSHOLE. And no shit they mean the same thing I didn't know what other reasons to give you since inciting violence is basically the gist of it. Getting in someone's face is basically inciting violence..

Ghostmost i am not really having a go at you buddy, maybe my job makes me more angry i have seen some really terrible examples of gay-bashing .
It just makes me so angry that in this century this still happens and the worst thing is the perpetrators dont see anything wrong with it .

I would appreciate some input about how other gay people deal with homophobia and gay bashing. One of the biggest things that freaks me out about being gay is having to face discrimination, hatred, and possibly even violence.

How do you deal with face-to-face gay-bashing & violence? Let's say that you are walking somewhere by yourself, and some men yell out "f*cking f@ggot!" What should you do then? What should you do if some guys start beating you, yelling out, "Die f@ggot," or "Burn in hell, you f@g!" ?

How do you cope with more subtle forms of homophobia at the workplace or in the local community? How open are you about your sexual orientation at work? Regardless of whether you are 'out' or not at work, how do you respond if you overhear your colleagues making "gay jokes" about you?

In your local community (especially if you're from a more traditional, suburban area), how do you deal with homophobia, gay-bashing, or perhaps vandalism committed by your neighbors?

I've found this only to be the case with gay men who are excessively flamboyant and feminine, and wear their homosexuality on their sleeve. They tend to have the most problems, it seems.

^ And what the fuck is the problem with that?

Gay guys should have every right to act as queeny or outrageous as they like in the same way that lesbians should be allowed to act as masculine as they want.

Any queer should be allowed to wear their homosexuality on their sleeve without the sniff of disapproval or threats from the homophobes. God knows that heterosexuals seem to be allowed to wear their heterosexuality on their sleeve or anywhere else for all that. You don't see them being punched or knifed by a bunch of fairies over it do you?

The way you act is no excuse for anyone to beat the shit out of you.

Agreed! It's the same nonsense that women have faced for years after being raped; "she was wearing a miniskirt", "she was out at 1 am at ________ bar", etc... As a justification of a woman being raped. It's ignorant in the extreme.

It doesn't make it right. People should be able to live life as they want without fear of reprisal. Violence because of who you like to sleep with is never acceptable.
