I was told by a Jewish rabbi with a doctorate in ancient studies, specifically that time period, who said that story makes perfect sense in the culture of the time. His explanation was one of those things I understood while listening, but not later... and since it didn't make sense to me later, I've forgotten it.

I saw a picture of him once on a list of "Five Faces That an Cause Diarrhea". I must be partly immune; it only gives me indigestion. :p

I've been sitting here trying to think of anything from my four terms of astronomy in college that doesn't contradict a 6k-y.o. earth. I think MAYBE the existence of shooting stars of unknown origin might qualify.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Actually there's a very old rabbinic technique of making a point under which that would be a legitimate argument; the idea is to present something obviously wrong to common knowledge as a way of indicating that a bigger truth is being communicated.

But somehow I really doubt that anyone who would put up that sign would be aware of said old technique, and I'm positive no one driving by and reading that would -- except maybe a well-educated rabbi, but he would hardly be a receptive audience.

There really aren't many versions, unless you mean modern translations, and that's just because it's hard to translate all the little nuances.

But as for the last question, it never claims to be "the ultimate instruction book for morality", except in one place, and that's where Jesus follows the common pattern of the rabbis of the day and says that loving God and loving one's neighbor sums up all instruction and explanation/admonition (Law and Prophets).

There are people who use both hands?

Yes. Sometimes you just have too much length to use just one, or maybe you have hands full of penises

I often wonder how many people follow horoscopes without realizing they're indulging in an ancient religion.

So true. They probably don't. When I see horroscopes in quality newspapers (paper editions) I always wonder "who are these people who like quality investigative journalism... AND read horroscopes?"

It's like getting a degree in biology AND becoming a born-again christian.

As an atheist, I entirely agree with what this cartoon says. Probably not in the sense that you as a christian intended. But the fact of the matter is that IS and the KKK both stay closer to what their scripture prescribes than their moderate counterparts.

One of the best biology professors I ever had was a born-again Christian. (He also had a degree in Old Testament studies (history and cultures) and so understood that the Creation accounts were never meant to be taken literally.) The two are not incompatible!

A better comparison would be working for NASA and being a flat-earther.

Obviously home schooling

Unfortunately no. There's a Nazarene church here in town that runs a grade school and I find papers like that on the street from time to time.

I found one about Jesus turning water into wine. Their lesson was that Jesus cares for wedding guests. I wrote on it "Jesus loves good wine!" and put it back where I found it.
