Do You Feel Guilty Owning A Car?

errrr.....No.

I couldn't earn a living without one.

Not at all. I think it is a responsible car (VW Jetta) and I use public transit to get to work.

Nope... no sidewalks near here, limited public transport, and not enough shoulder on the road to ride a bike, too much rain to only rely on a motorcycle, and had to cart around my two kids on a cycle, too. I'm with Jasun on hating SUV's... if you need one, sure, but how many people need one of those huge monstrosities (sp?) like an Escalade/Excursion? especially in an urban environment... and don't even talk to me about hummers....

I find it hard to believe that people living in PA - a state in the most affluent, modern, dynamic country in the world - don't have a developed public transport system.

Perhaps www.bctma.com/ is a starting point? ..|

And now we have a thread on JUB "selling" cars!!!

Probably the same guys who get moralistically apoplectic about not using condoms

I've resurrected ;) this thread today as "The Sunday Times", here in the UK, carries a report in which the Bishop of London says that flying and using gas-guzzling cars is a sin.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/uk

Any further thoughts?

I reduce my guilt by getting a small, 4-cylinder station wagon rather than a gas guzzling SUV.

OK, so it's the Turbo model, but... :-)

I don't feel guilty owning a fuel efficient small car. I would feel guilty owning a gas hog SUV. It has already been said that no one needs to own a vehicle that large. There was a time when I was inbetween vehicles and I used the city bus to get back and forth to work. It was $25 for a 30 day pass. It was rather nice. But unfortunately the schedule of the bus seldom matched my own. Since I live in the Pacific Northwest walking or biking in the rain is not an option. I would love to bike all the time except that I am required to wear a tie at work and biking is not a business casual affair. I wish there were better ways for us to travel here in the US. There just aren't. Seattle and Tacoma need to get there act together though. Driving is a nightmare here. No one can come together and decide how rapid transit should be paid for. We are too busy building sports arenas. Good knows we couldn't survive as a country without f**king sports! But that's another thread.

I think I will take a limo to the airport, fly to London, take a Rolls Royce to the bishop's manse, BITCH SLAP THE BISHOP, return to the airport in the Rolls, fly home with a return trip to my house by limo. In fact, I'd take the scenic route to and from the airport.

Sin? Who cares what he thinks?

Nope, not a bit. If it makes you feel better, I share mine and don't use it that much.

I stopped driving after I moved from the country to the city. Now I mostly bike and use public transit for financial reasons and just as a personal preference. I don't think that people should feel guilty for needing a car; afterall, urban development has been centered around cars for decades.

Oh and BTW our bill for gas (Gas credit card) is over $1k a month.

Yet we keep buying bigger cars/suvs...

I would like Jubbers to read the responses to this thread. Most of the responses are pro car. But most of the respondees do not seem happy about using a car.

Is it not time to ditch the car and use more eco- friendly forms of transport, such as bikes, buses, local transit, etc?

I can take the bus to go to the mall and the grocery store, have to transfer and then have to be careful not to buy so much that I can't lug it home, total one way trip is an hour, or I can drive our ULEV less than ten minutes and be able to bring home a week's worth of stuff in one trip. Isn't MY time worth something as well?

No, not at all. Atlanta's mass transit sucks, and my time is too valuabe. My 3 year old car only has 13,000 miles, so I don't waste my driving needs.

Not at all. My car gets pretty good gas mileage and it's a necessity.

Let's see...

I could haul my chain saw, gas can, oil jug, giant thermos, etc. in a bicycle trailer, I suppose. At my current job, it would take ninety minutes to get to work that way, with a serious risk of being hit by a not-quite-awake tourist, and then ninety minutes to return. of course, I'd be so tired by the time I got on site that I'd have to rest half an hour before going at it.
Now, do I charge the customer for all that time? That's two+ hours out of my day!

It seems to me, having just read this thread straight through to the post I'm quoting, that you haven't been paying attention very well, greaves. A lot of us CAN'T get by without a car, or in my case, a truck. As was pointed out, you live in London. To compare, the services you enjoy within a half-hour's commute on one of your alternate forms of transportation are, for me, spread across an area larger than I can cross in my truck in two hours even if all the roads were empty.
As for work -- well, I suppose I could have things delivered, but then I have to depend on the schedules of delivery people, and when it costs as much again as the product is worth to have it delivered, that has to go to my customers ... and guess what? They'll choose someone who will pick things up cheaper!

So, do I feel guilty about my truck? Only when I think of the interest I'm paying the bank, and when I have to delay maintenance so its performance suffers.

If you're worried about pollution... do you feel guilty when you turn on a light?
