Does anybody else think that Prides make us look like zoo animals?

364 days a year we are mostly ignored and the one day we gather together, have a parade and some fair booths, it's made a public event where we can't walk around freely without ending up on pics and videos.

I've never been to PRIDE, but I'll be going for the first time in a couple weeks. Now seems like a good time to quote one of my favorite posts on this forum.

A Pride Parade should be the gay community's day to be ourselves out loud. I refuse to censor myself so the suburbanites can come down and have me entertain them. Pride is for US... not for us to put on a show for THEM.

When some group of uptight straight people is whining that I have to censor myself so they can still take their kids to come laugh at the funny queers, we have a problem.

Pride Day isn't a public relations day for the community and it shouldn't be a commercial for gay rights. We're not trying to make a political statement other than "You can beat me down and I'm still not ashamed to be me."

But I'll let Harvey have the last word..

People treat us like zoo animals at Pride... that's a different thing. And it's something I resent mightily. As Jasun says, we're not doing this for them, we're doing it for us... they can come watch, they can come support, but they don't get to dictate or get in the way.

I'm an attention-whore, especially when I'm in drag, so I'm always willing to stop and pose with some tourists along the way. But I sometimes wonder what the caption of the picture is going to be... is it "Here I am with these fabulous drag queens we met at Baghdad Cafe" or is it going to be "Look at the freaks, Ma!" I don't get to edit, since I agreed to the picture, but I still wonder.

But you know what I want America to see when they look at us? I want them to see that we're happy. We like being nekkid or dressed up as the whim takes us, we like being young and we like being old, we like being all kinds of races and socioeconomic statuses and all. We like being outside and in the open. We aren't hiding, we aren't ashamed, and we aren't afraid.
