Ellen Degeneres [merged]

Re: Ellen Degeneres is getting married

I really like those two together. I hope it lasts a while.

Re: Why Oh Why is Ellen...

She's been selling those pretty much since her talk so started five years ago. If I remember correctly, they started out as an on-air joke and people started asking to buy them.

Mario Lopez wears them:

Here's the entire scene:

I suspect, after that episode, sales shot way up.

Re: Why Oh Why is Ellen...

Because people will buy them?

Let's put it this way. If someone said "Hey, if you put your name on the waistband of some boxers, people will buy them!" wouldn't you be thinking "Hey, easy money!"

I don't blame her. She'd be an idiot to pass up a good business opportunity.

Re: Why Oh Why is Ellen...

I think she leaves a pair in the green room for all her guests, there are part of the welcome basket. I recall Josh Duhamel coming on showing the Ellen waistband saying he put them on the green room.
Two questions come to mind:
1. Are the any security camera in that green room, and were are the tapes?
2. What happened to the underwear he had on when he arrived,
and who has them now? ;)

Re: Why Oh Why is Ellen...

It wouldn't surprise me if more than a few lesbians wore them.

I thought the same thing but then decided not to say it. Non-PC? But I applaud you for suggesting it!

In admiration of Ellen

This is basically in regards to the McCain vs. Degeneres thread in the CE&P forum, but I really think it deserves to be discussed by more people than that.

Ellen is in a unique and very rare position. She's openly gay and yet in a position of influence and is very highly-regarded and admired by a wide array of people. She handles that position very well. Rosie O'Donnell, while I admire her, took a more aggressive approach by coming out not through the closet door, but by bursting the wall like the Kool-Aid man on the attack. When she came out, she had reached the level of admiration that Ellen is at now, but her militant stance alienated her fans and she was never able to claim the position she deserved at the time. Ellen on the other hand, played her cards carefully. She laid low for several years and even when she re-emerged, kept relatively quiet about her personal life. It's only been recently, after adequately gaining the trust of her fans, that she's begun expressing herself more freely. She openly talks about her relationship and her political views and her fans, instead of being alienated, are drawn in and listen to what she has to say. It's not just the LGBT community that watches her, either. She is watched and admired by people from all walks of life and political ideals. She has the power to make a difference.

In regards to John McCain's appearance, she was not afraid to mention "the elephant in the room." She stated her beliefs to the man who very well could be in a position to counter them come January. The audience cheered her when she spoke and sat slient when McCain did. McCain could only speak slightly above a whisper and was visibly uncomfortable. This man who could be our next President couldn't handle being interviewed by Ellen Degeneres. He knows Ellen already has and will continue to open a lot of minds that had previously been closed to a lot of the things she stands for. That really is a powerful place for her to be.

Re: In admiration of Ellen

The funny thing about all of this is that when anybody on the right is asked why gays shouldn't have the right to marry, not one person has ever given a good, valid reason. I think Ellen brought that out in McCain, especially when all he could say in no specific terms is "We respectfully disagree".

I think the tide is turning in favor of gay marriage, albeit slowly. I also think that Ellen should be commended and admired for standing up for the entire GLBT community, and herself as a person and gay citizen. She has a high enough level of visibility and respect that she may just be able to initiate changes that would otherwise take a great many years to occur.

](*,)](*,)

in my opinion, what you saw with McCain is what you are going to get if he becomes president. that being he was not even willing to stand and defend his own position on an issue that he knew he was going to be confronted with by appearing on the show.

his response was no response. it was avoidance. he did the same thing with the questions from the audience - he avoided giving direct answers to their questions.

what a pitiful mistake the American people will be making if they go and elect his as our next president. he represents the same tired lack of leadership we have had for the last eight years.:grrr::grrr:

Re: In admiration of Ellen

It's great what Ellen is doing. DoctorSun explained it very well (although it's kind of sad that Ellen had to have such a drawn out process; really, Rosie should've been accepted regardless of how she came out).

The sad thing is--why is the gay leaders in Hollywood only women? Where are the gay men in Hollywood standing up for their rights?

Re: In admiration of Ellen

I saw that as well. I thought it was very gracious of Ellen to apologize for running out of time rather than saying that McCaine ran away because he looked so bad, which I'm sure that is what actually happened.

Re: In admiration of Ellen

I dearly love Ellen.

I remember her interview with T.R. Knight from 'Grey's Anatomy' when he got outed without wanting to be...

She handled that moment with such grace and compassion it brought a tear to my eye.

I have to wonder what McCain hoped to achieve by going on her show, though. I assume to appeal to a wide range of voters, (as if to say, 'I was tortured in Vietnam, I'm strong enough to sit with a lesbian ')

In the end, I just found it a bit uncomfortable.

Re: In admiration of Ellen

I too am a fan of Ellen and respect her very much; BUT......

I canNOT help but feel some compassion for Senator McClain.

I mean to agree to go on a show where he knows what's going to be asked and for him to defend his POV; (which he canNOT) to any of us who are Gay and want our Civil Rights!

So, if anyone of the candidates want to be the next President of the U.S., NONE of them can afford to come out totally for us; or it's the Kiss of death for them....totally!

Do you all see my point here?

Look at Bill Clinton's FIRST election to the Presidency when he told us he would NEVER let us down..........BUT he DID! Because if he did NOT he would NEVER have been elected the first time and certainly NOT for the second term either.

I just don't see anyone taking up the national campaign for us that will make the difference; although Ellen certainly is a person of power, she canNOT be that political influence that will over-ride the majority of Americans who still canNOT allow GLBT's the Civil Rights the Constitution of the U.S. allows to us.....

The ONLY way we will ever get the ability to have ALL the states allowing marriage for same-sex couples is for the Congress to come out for us and I just don't see it happening in the next 50 years of so!!!!

However, look at the Civil Rights marches, etc that allowed Black Americans the ability to finally get what they deserved.....It took the "Blood" theory; that is, people had to DIE so that their civil rights were finally granted!

I think the ONLY way we will ever get the same will be to have peaceful marches to protest and be willing to go to jail and even to die for those rights; else we will NEVER get them!

Sad but true!(*8*)

Re: In admiration of Ellen

^ No, I think it's just a matter of time.

People in our generations are all uptight about GLBT issues. But young people today (born after 1990) are just so blase about the whole thing. When they become leaders, the whole GLBT rights thing will be a total non-issue.

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't stand up for our rights in the meantime. And we should interrogate and punish any politician who won't stand up for us.

Re: Ellen Degeneres is getting married

Thanks for the update Mattie! :)

Wow...when people are aloud to post annonymously, they really can show their true hateful colors. So many of the responses to the articles are so nasty. It just goes to show how much bigotry we still have out there. However, I do wonder how many ot those posts are posted by the same people. Some people have nothing better to do than spread their hate.
