Eurovision Song Contest 2009

The Uk has no chance of ever winning again. The voting panel is only half the vote. But even they will still be biased.

Its now completely dominated by Easteuros incestuous voting. Which means Russia will always be near the top while UK, France & Germany will always be near the bottom.

Its never had any relevance to the real music world but now its the kiss of death. Which is a shame because the UKs entrant, Jade, has got one helluva voice. Even though the song is very Musical theatre. Well, it is a Loyd Webber song so....
... So deep fried shit wrapped in delicate cellophane lace: too bad for the lace.

Do people actually still watch this crap?

I rather agree with this analysis (apart from the Cilla Black reference, as I've never seen that show - but given that she was a 60's UK pop icon, I can imagine...)

Mind you - the Eurovision borefest can occasionally surprise - like the time, fairly recently, that some Heavy Metal mob (from Finland?) won. Not that I like Heavy Metal - but at least it was a departure from the awful predictable chintzy 'formula' pop that usually wins.

Mind you - I don't think they'll ever surpass the time they (a few years ago now) voted an Israeli transexual as the winner. :=D:

Lordi = Pure Awesome.

I remember Terry Wogan going *oh god, what on earth are these guys*

then by the end he was loving it.

As long as Holland doesn't even make it through the preliminaries. De Toppers, seriously? They're like the lowest of the low. *vomits*

And yet one has to admire their position on gay rights:

Dutch threaten Eurosong boycott over gay rights

They probably won't make it to the finals, but the Dutch entry for the Eurovision Song Contest - The Toppers - are raising hell over Russia's gay rights record.

Her name is Dana International. She actually wrote the song for Israel's entry last year "The Fire In Your Eyes", which I thought was great. She is still very famous and very active musically in Israel and all over Europe...(Saw her in Ibiza last Summer...)

I will go fucking mad if we dont get in the top ten tommorow, most of the acts that got through are shit! The only ones that I like are Norway, Estonia and Ukraine.

And how did Ireland not get through really, they where really good. And dont even get me started with Greece, that was a load of bolax cant beleive that got through! Its not looking good for the UK! Got a bad feeling about this!

Well, who are the UK going to give top marks to? Now that Ireland are out.

I have not liked the majority of performers this year, as opposed to last year when I liked almost everyone. This year they all sound alike and all sing in English as though they think they are on American Idol. It is Eurovision, people! Where is your Eurocentricity? Where is your pride in your own roots, your own language? (God Bless You Nelly Ciobanu and Sandra Nurmsalu!) That is why the Eastern Europeans voted so heavily for one another last year. Everyone outside of their region sounded either like idiots or like they wished they were Americans. Who can blame them? Personally, I would have voted for Serbia last year myself, but Russia won (with a song in English for Heaven's sake!)

Ok just to let everyone know if you live in Europe outside the UK please vote for the UK. PLZZZZZZZZZZZ

Russia is officially backwards.

I had heard about the problems these people had had with Russian authorities, but given what I know about the "Georgian problem" and the "Putin problem", I think the real scandal should be about the source of inspiration to this Russia Inferno:

Riot police violently broke up several gay rights demonstrations in Moscow on Saturday, hauling away scores of protesters hours before the Russian capital hosted a major international pop music competition.

City officials had warned they would not tolerate marches or rallies supporting the rights of gays and lesbians. Activists had targeted Moscow, which was holding the finals of the Eurovision song contest on Saturday, to press their claims that Russia officially sanctions homophobia.

Police seized gay rights protesters as well as some members of religious and nationalist groups that staged counter-demonstrations. They also took away gay rights activists for simply talking to reporters, and ripped the bra and shirt off one female protester.

Moscow police spokesman Anatoly Listovetsky said 40 people were detained, although media reports said up to 80 had been seized.

Among those detained were British activist Peter Tatchell and American activist Andy Thayer of Chicago, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network.

Tatchell and most of the others were detained during a hastily organized protest near Moscow State University in southwest Moscow, where about 30 protesters shouted "Homophobia is a disgrace of this country!" and "We are demanding equal rights!"

"This shows the Russian people are not free!" Tatchell yelled as he was being dragged to a police car. He was released a short time later.

"The arrests were done in a very violent, aggressive manner," Tatchell told The Associated Press after his release. "We believe the reaction of the Moscow police was totally unjustified."

Tatchell said Russian gay rights leaders had appealed to Eurovision contestants to denounce the police crackdown from the stage at tonight's competition. The live contest, which pits singers from different nations against each other, has drawn up to 100 million television viewers previously and is Europe's most prestigious pop song competition.

"Today's arrests go against the principles of Eurovision, which are about peace, harmony, cooperation and unity between all the peoples in Europe," he said. "Gay people are part of Europe, they are part of Russia -- their rights and freedoms are as important as everyone else's."

Thayer was hustled off by police as he spoke with reporters. He said he had come to help "fight for the soul of Russian democracy."

"If ... the right to assemble is taken away from lesbian and gay people here in Russia, then other Russians have to fear for their own freedom," Thayer said seconds before police burst through a ring of journalists to take him away.

Gutted for Ireland. Catchy song and great performance I thought.
I don't like the way Russia, France, Germany, Britain and Spain automatically get to the final.

.
You mean paying most of the money that makes the show possible...

So the big countries buy their way into the final and the new countries block vote making sure they don't win.
I want to go back to the 90's eurovision when i could still believe it was a song contest.
No: the big countries put on a show and the lesser countries join and do as they please.
