Falwell: Dead [Updated title]

Re: Falwell found unresponsive in his office. Grave condition

Despite all his efforts to promote hatred and bring hardship to the GLBT community, we should acknowledge that Falwell was a sensationally shrewd businessman. After all, he found a way to sell his thoughtless ideology to “people of faith” for billions of dollars. His one-sided approach to social equality coupled with an outright denouncement of secularism in America also helped to lay a foundation for other entrepreneurial ministers to profit from the marriage of politics and religious fear mongering. Perhaps a more encompassing viewpoint would suggest that it is fair to assume you've created God in your own image, when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.

Now he knows the truth.

"Where do bad folks go when they die? they don't go to Heaven where the angels fly. They go to a lake of fire and fry..."

Re: Falwell found unresponsive in his office. Grave condition

I was surprised to hear of Falwell's death but I was surprised even more that I actually did feel a little sad at his passing. I am no fan of his and know fully well what he did to the gay community but I think we should try to remember that he was a person and he did have a family. I am also not a Christian but I believe that forgiveness and respect for the dead are something that we should strive for just the same. Let us not forget that Falwell really served as a mouthpiece for a significant portion of the American people in his ultra-social conservative views. The instinct to demonize him establish him as a kind of boogeyman might be comforting and even fun to do, but it obscures the fact that he represented the views of many more Americans then some of us would like to admit.

I am more interested in the effect of Falwell's death on the role of religious right in American politics. Given the fact that the three front-runners in the GOP presidential race don't measure up to christian conservatives in one way or another, I can't help but wonder if Falwell's death is symbolic of the death of the religious right, or perhaps more realistically, a dramatic reduction in their influence in the Republican party.

Re: Falwell found unresponsive in his office. Grave condition

I can understand the gays on this board showing some respect for a bigot that died. But where was the respect for the basketball team that Imus went after?

Wait wait, come to Imus' defense and offer your respect for a racist homophobe in Falwell. Anybody else you want to salute? Hitler? Mary Cheney?

Hope springs eternal, but so does evil. A perfect example is when we kill someone of note in the terrorist circle, another appears who is as bad or worse. I have no doubt that some other 'religiothug' (coined by GA) will fill the void left by Rev. Falwell's demise. The talons of the religious right are sunk deep into the GOP hide and nothing short of major surgery or 24/7 helicopter air-drop rides will dislodge them.

I have nothing nice to say, so I'm just going to just mention that I've updated the thread title and disappear. *wave*

Re: Fawell found unresonsive in his office. Grave condition

The evidence says otherwise. Oh, I don't doubt you believe your own press releases, though:

SO what your saying is Hillary is dead? Or you think it is a sad misfortune that Hillary can't get laid.......whats was the remark supposed to lead you to?

Oh more hate and disgruntled senior ramblings, I forgot

Re: Fawell found unresonsive in his office. Grave condition

I can't wait to hear what the Ten Corpses running for the Republican nomination have to say about Falwell's passing -- I suspect they'll trip over each other, singing his praises...[/QUOTE]

I hadn't thought of that -- not a bad stick to measure them by.

Re: Falwell found unresponsive in his office. Grave condition

A relieving end to a man who distorted the message of Jesus and shamed the name of Christianity by miring it into the corruption of politics.

My thoughts exactly! When I saw the news, relief was the thing I felt -- not happiness, not vindictiveness, just relief that he's gone, wherever he went.

Re: Falwell found unresponsive in his office. Grave condition

Tis funny - Wikipedia is already updated:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Falwell

Not surprising. There are teams who watch the news on certain topics, and when something happens affecting their topic, they get right on it.
I've seen updates on things before the first broadcast news about them had finished!

I just checked it out -- that's some darned thorough updating; the death is mentioned in appropriate places throughout the whole article.

Re: Falwell found unresponsive in his office. Grave condition

The record shows otherwise...

or perhaps this...

Man... how could you just completely forget what you write like that?

Defend a racist guy and then act like you never knew him... what a shame.

Thanks for finding the time to point that out Alfie. ..|

By the way, Mowrest where are you? Your profile says you're online but ya ain't postin'.

People are saying he died of a heart attack...... but don't you need a heart to have a coronary?:p

He and his other religious leaders "bilked" billions of dollars into tax exempt foundations and churches stealind funds from millions who could least afford it.

The praise him for his shrewed business sense and those of his followers on all levels - including our own government, while soldiers in Iraq were dying while these profiters did their deeds is a disgrace to those dead soldiers.

And while we are at it = i wonder who many of those military men who died were HOMOSEXUALS? I'll bet the wonderful profiteers you speak so highly of, in and out of the ministry weren't too concerned out where their souls ended up.

May his God forgive his soul.

The death of Falwell is the birth of more vicious bigots and harcore right.I won't be surprise that the community greatest enemy will be one of ours cloned in Falwell and Phelps character combined.
Just read some of the post, they don;t have to be Falwell or Phelps, they hate their kind ,they hate themselves, they will lie, distort and pretend to be one of us.It doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

"There is no greater evil than the darkness in your heart"- St Judas by Natalie Merchant

Falwell created the "moral majority," which of course was neither moral nor the majority. It was a lie.

Falwell was responsible, on the "religious" side anyway, for infusing the religious right into the Republican Party, which --along with neocons-- is a big part of what ruined the GOP.

That, and making a lot of money off people's fear and insecurity and pain, is his legacy.

Hopefully Phelps' group will show up at his funeral in a protest. They're just crazy enough to find some reason for his death. Something else to blame on us.
