Re: any Cyndi lauper fans out here?

People seem to think of her as an '80 act but she has put out great work in the '90s and '00s as well. New album is 'Back To The Brink' and is a dance album.

POP star Cyndi Lauper is planning a chart comeback through dance music, but isn't worried how music listeners will view her change of genre.

Lauper, best known for '80s hits Girls Just Want to Have Fun, True Colours and Time After Time will release a dance album this year.

Bring You to the Brink was recorded in London, Paris and Sweden, and features collaborations with dance acts Basement Jaxx, Dragonette and the Scumfrog among others.

"I wanted a combination of a lot of different rhythms," Lauper explained.
"A lot of times in dance music they process the vocals so much you can't connect to it, there's no warmth, you lose the humanity.

"So I saw a medium I'd like to work in, but with a voice that's less processed, more human."

Lauper, 54, has sold 25 million-plus albums, while Time After Time has been covered by more than 100 acts from Miles Davis to Matchbox Twenty.

The singer is putting the finishing touches to her new album while on her first Australian tour in four years.

A long-time supporter of the gay and lesbian community, Lauper will also appear at the Mardi Gras in Sydney this weekend.

As for preparing to launch new material into a musical landscape that often pigeonholes her as a nostalgia act, the singer isn't concerned.

"It's like the Nike commercial, I'll just do it. That's my job," she said.

"I don't know how other people view my career, but I'm very proud of what I've done.

"I've always kept a level of integrity in my work."

CYNDIIIIIIIIII!

I loved her when i was really young and then got back into her a few years ago. I didn't realize that she's actually a powerhouse vocalist. She doesn't show it off much, but she's got a GREAT range, lots of different tones and she can sustain very difficult notes evenly and powerfully.
She was great in the Divas concert and sung with her close friend Patti Labelle (like the only person to share the stage with Ms Patti and hold her own).

Cyndi has always been gay friendly. She had a friend who died of AIDS way back when around when True Colours came out (it was dedicated to him at first). She's still very much a positive force for us.

She was on Canadian idol (they're doing celebrity weeks lately), and she got the contestants to do WAY better, and a much more dramatic improvement than any of the other artists could manage.

She has a newish CD called At Last, which is a cover CD and I found it sort of introverted in terms of how she sung. It was odd but definitely a good album.
And then there was an acoustic album a couple of years ago "The Body Acoustic" where she does new versions of a lot of her songs, many featuring other artists. I think my fave from it is All Through the Night feat Shaggy. (yeah, Cyndi Lauper & Shaggy!)

Long Live Cyndi!

Re: any Cyndi lauper fans out here?

I quite enjoy Cyndi.

Her music is very appeasing to the ears.

Funny story, whenever 'All Through The Night' plays on my computer or Radio and I'm with my boyfriend and the lyrics "Stray cat is calling..." I mkae this horrible meowing sound as if a cats in heat.

I did it once and my boyfriend started laughing, so I've done it ever since.
I like that song.

Sounds great. I really like her but sometimes feel that her material is a bit misguided. Love the artwork.

Re: Cyndi Lauper : "Bring ya to the brink"

As much as I love her as an artist and performer, I met her a few years ago and she was just rude. That left a bad taste in my mouth, and I don't know if I want to hear this. This may sound childish, but I have been a fan of Cyndi's since I was a kid and for her to be so bitchy to me, was not cool. Hell, for her to be bitchy with any of her fans isn't cool. I'm not saying she owes me anything, but she could have been a little nicer.

Hopefully She makes a Comback with this album....

Re: Cyndi Lauper : "Bring ya to the brink"

Actually, Same Ole Story is the first single and it was released on iTunes today.

Re: Cyndi Lauper : "Bring ya to the brink"

Quite possible Cyndi's best album ever

I just finished my third consecutive run through Cyndi's brand new album "Bring ya to the brink" and I firmly believe that this is her best album ever.

I can't remember when was the last time I liked an album by Cyndi this much (maybe since her "She's so unusual" days), but these 12 tracks plus the 2 bonus are absolutely the stuff of what dreams are made of.

This new Cyndi wants to reinvent herself and she achieves her goal with flying colours claiming her "Dancefloor Diva crown" the way Madonna has done it previously with "Confessions on the dancefloor" or Kylie Minogue with "X".

Lauper mixes together 80's new wave stylings with easy, effusive beats that are nothing if not indicative of the late 2000's to create a sound neither retro nor modern, that never fails to entertain.

From the funky, infectious opener "High and Mighty" with its temperamental synths to the sweeping gust of wind that is "Set Your Heart," the album is wall to wall uptempo energy.

Hooks run aplenty on "Echo," a bittersweet slice of eurodance, as well as lead single "Same Ol' Story," a fluffy production reminiscent of those legendary collaborations between Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder. Lauper declares on the sweaty, propulsive "Give It Up," ("I've got to get back to the floor!") and we know that she really means it.

"Lyfe", one of the highlights of the album, with its memorable chorus ("Lyfe/It can shake ya/It can break ya/It can bring ya to the brink") competes with "Raging Storm," a meditation on problems inherent in the values of today's cultural landscape, for the best album track award.

Third single "Into the Nightlife" is the most instantly addicting with its gyrating snyths, stomp-on-glass production values and cheeky, sexual lyrics, while "Rocking Chair" a collaboration with Basement Jaxx, provides a mighty hook and eye-popping lyrics. It's a joy to hear Lauper wrap her vocals around its juicy, uncontainable melody.

"Grab a hold" surprises with its obvious musical reference to Madonna's "Like a virgin". I can assure you that is hard to tell in the first 20 seconds the difference between the two of them.

"Lay Me Down" with its haunting, inescapable melody and evocative lyrics is another strong number, while "Rain on Me" strangely closes the disc on a weak note.

But if you can get your hands on the international edition, a couple of amazing bonus tracks like "Got Candy" and the extraordinary ballad "Can't Breath" (Who the Hell dediced to leave that gem out of the album????. It's Lauper's strongest ballad since "Time After Time"!!!) will make that extra money spent totally worthy.

I met her at a Borders in Ft Lauderdale about 4 years ago, and she performed an acoustic version of her songs along with her band. Afterwards she signed her CD, "Shine" which I think is a great CD. She was very nice and very friendly. I saw her the evening before where she opened for Cher's Farewell Tour. She was fantastic in concert. I'm suprised about your experience.

Re: Cyndi Lauper : "Bring ya to the brink"

I was surprised by the album. She's always sort of followed her own path, but this is one time - the first since 1984? - where her muse may coincide with popular taste. The songs are poppy and dance-y, but they somehow don't sound "retro" OR "bandwagonesque". Yeah, she may use a vocoder here or an 80s beat there, but somehow it all sounds...different. It's neat. I like it.

But it was weird hearing her swear. :)

She seemed very friendly and down to earth when I met her. It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience.

I'm gonna have to agree with you, SFLMAN.

Cyndi came to Argentina a few years ago, and right after a sold out show, she spent more than two hours taking pictures, signing cds, posters, shirts (and the rest of the usual merchandising) and she only left the place when the last fan got pleased and got the wrong impression.

She kept a big smile and the best mood all the time, so I only have good things to say about her.

On the other hand, she's only human. And maybe SilverDreams encountered Cyndi while she was having a bad day like the ones we usually have and got the wrong impression.
