Fifty Shades of Grey [merged]

Re: 50 Shades of Grey. Who has read it? Details or it didnt happen ;-)

^ From what I gather, it's just some poorly-written smut novel for repressed women.

As for the video, I'm just a huge fan of Godfrey. When I first saw the video I was crying. It's far better than SNL's Charlton Heston reading Madonna's book.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey. Who has read it? Details or it didnt happen ;-)

The first one sucked so fucking bad I didn't bother with the other two (thank God). The author is so lazily uncreative she had to actually put the sex contracts into the book. She couldn't describe them - she actually had to show them.

So bad. Makes Twilight look like Ulysses.

Let us never have those two words in the same sentence ever again.

Well, it was originally posted online as Twilight fan-fiction, so it comes as no surprise to me that it is still absolute garbage after the rework.

Who wants to read about straight S&M? Sounds boring and gross. The Gilbert Gottfried clip was hilarious.

This is why its so upsetting that it takes something like this to make people read a book -_-

I don't think there has been this much buzz about books since the first few harry potters came out.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey. Who has read it? Details or it didnt happen ;-)

To the various accurate observations above I'll add:

The sex is, to quote my grandmother, repetitive.

The BDSM is misguided and won't be interesting to people who know what they're doing. There are technical and psychological deficiencies and it's portrayed as a sickness that Christian Grey must be cured of.

I read it (all three) because I write BDSM erotica (gay, usually) and had to see what the fuss was about. Fortunately, I didn't have to spend money on it.

There's an article (don't have the link now) that explains how the author is very skilled in targeting the audience and giving them what they want. The success is more about finding the right fit than writing a quality book. It's like junk food - the success is due to packaging, customer satisfaction, etc, not nutritional value and culinary artistry.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey. Who has read it? Details or it didnt happen ;-)

After hearing most of the comments why even bother with it

Re: 50 Shades of Grey. Who has read it? Details or it didnt happen ;-)

Read the first book just see what the hype was. Thought about reading the 2nd book to see if the story gets better, but from what other posters are saying above...I will pass. I can't believe that they are going to make a movie on this. They are going to have to completely change the plot, there is no way I can see a whole movie based on just this book. For those that have read the 2nd and 3rd book, can you give us a brief summary on what happened? Thanks.

And for those who are curious about reading the first book, I have to say NO. It is pretty much a straight erotica book about light BDSM. And that is it. No real story except about a main character trying to decide whether or not she wants to continue the relationship with BDSM.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey. Who has read it? Details or it didnt happen ;-)

There's a bit more plot in the next two. Some of the customer reviews on Amazon provide a summary. Try the "most helpful" review for each book - the reviews by "cupcake".

Re: Male Lead in Fifty Shades of Grey

it's Matt Bomer, apparently.

Re: Male Lead in Fifty Shades of Grey

I doubt it will be anyone with a big movie career because it sound way too trashy. People have wanted Ryan Gosling but I doubt he'd stoop to something like that. I can see it being someone like Alexander Skarsgard who is hot, perfect in True Blood but not a good enough actor to do lots of different roles.

50 Shades of Grey cast announced. Who is the cast?

http://entertainment.time.com/2013/09/03/b-list-stars-for-50-shades-of-grey-film/

The relatively low-profile actors Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam are set to star in the upcoming movie adaptation of the popular erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

The casting news, revealed in Monday Twitter posts by the author of the novel, are the first sneak peek into the coming series of films based on the international best-selling series by E.L. James. Both actors are relatively unknown. Johnson has previously had minor roles in The Social Network and 21 Jump Street. She also played the lead-role of Kate in the short-lived comedy series Ben and Kate. Hunnam currently stars as Jax Teller on the FX series Sons of Anarchy.

Industry insiders have speculated for months over who would secure two of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. Emma Watson, Shailene Woodley and Analeigh Tipton were all rumored for the lead female role of Anastasia, an innocent college student who enters into a lewd relationship with Grey. Robert Pattinson, Armie Hammer and True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard were rumored to be in contention for the roles of Grey.

Johnson and Hunnam will presumably sign on for films based on all three books.

Your choices? . . .

I thought Channing Tatum or Matt Bomer would be Christian. I havent read the book so I dont know about the female role

Re: 50 Shades of Grey cast announced. Who is the cast?

JUB may more recognize Charlie Hunnam as Nathan from the original "Queer as Folk" (Justin in the US adaptation)

I've never read the book and have no desire to ever see a movie, but he's a good looking guy and half decent actor.

with a low-brow project like 50 Shades, they were never going to get an A-list actor.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey cast announced. Who is the cast?

I would have some interests in this if they have cast Matt Bomer.

Apparently, that's what the fans wanted too.

But I know that the Studio will NEVER cast Bomer because he is gay.

It's a real downer.....

As a gay man myself....I have absolutely no intention or desire to see this film. How many countless heterosexual romance movies that Hollywood has been churning out for the past decades?

Oh great, another heterosexual love movie for all the straight people out there..... As if there wasn't already enough Twilight or another Nicholas Sparks movie.

If only " Fifty shades of Grey" is about two men.............sigh :(

Re: 50 Shades of Grey cast announced. Who is the cast?

Question: as a gay man who probably reads two books a week as well as innumerable magazines, is the book -- or the trilogy -- worth reading, for any reason other than curiosity? Or is it totally about horny straight women and their fantasies (in which case I would answer my own question with "no")? Honestly, my close women friends haven't read it. Maybe that is revealing in itself.

Yummy photo. I watched the British as well as the American series (shot in Toronto, btw, which was made to look like Pittsburgh, at "Woody's," a venerable bar in boystown). And I echo your sentiments, Darden.

no... it's really just an online Twilight fanfiction story that got picked up by a publisher and had the names Bella and Edward changed.
