Florida Gay Club PULSE has been attacked with injuries, and possible hostage situation.

The US has a tradition of free speech... and that tolerance includes ugly, hateful speech.

What we can do is vote these demagogues out of office. They get into office by appealing to the lowest common denominator- evangelical activists who vote in primaries. Or they depend on votes in states where party "straight ticket" is allowed- all a voter has to do is walk into the booth and check a single box to vote for everyone in that party.

The global trend has been that religious moderates aren't active in their religions. Liberals and reformists are increasingly agnostic or cynical about organized religions. This leaves conservatives and extremists which unfortunately also overlap with lower socioeconomic groups who also have higher birth rates.

He wasn't an observant Muslim- he was clean-shaven, he didn't cover his head, he was apparently sleeping with women outside of marriage and there's little evidence that he observed the five pillars of Islam.

What these guys always have in common is that they start with an agenda and they find religious justification that supports their existing beliefs. From the people who knew him, it sounds like this guy was mentally ill- to the point that his first wife left him to escape an abusive marriage and his coworkers quit to get away from him. Multiple people had reported him to police and the FBI because of fictitious claims that he made about being associated with terrorist organizations.

Mental hospitals are full of people who claim to be divinely inspired. That's probably where he belonged.

This bears repeating often.

It is the same thing that drives poorly educated, lower socio-economic status voters flocking to white supremacist movements...and now...to Donald Trump.

I still suspect that the Orlando shooter was also wrestling with his own homo proclivities as well.....but we'll never know.

"Mental hospitals are full of people who claim to be divinely inspired. That's probably where he belonged."

So it is fair that people can make fun of religious people who claimed "divinely inspired"

No, it isn't, and he wasn't making fun of religious people. He was simply saying that Mateen probably belonged in a mental hospital for treatment.

TV Evangelists all claim 'divine inspiration'. They 'talk to God'. We don't make fun of them. We make fun of their hypocrisy.

I note a lack of acrid condemnation by the "all religion is extremism and should be outlawed" crowd in the thread. Bryce posted a compassionate sticky on the front page of Hot Topics, yet hasn't received the due excoriation for openly offering "thoughts and prayers" to the victims and their families. Maybe those extreme anti-religionists don't really have the balls to slap just anyone for being compassionate AND religious.

There is no indication the assassin was from ISIS, none. He reached out in his flame out to claim association, but all evidence is to the contrary.

As for gun control, it is sorely needed, but waste no time in discussing a total ban, as that has as much chance of coming as the 1% paying fair taxes again. Only partial bans are possible, and they'll never pertain to actual hunting rifles and shotguns, never. We'd make good headway to get assault weapons banned and stiffen gun crime penalties in conjunction.

I have to concede that fundamentalist Christians are indeed mainstream, quickly outnumbering the older and more moderate Protestants, yet it is still true that none of them have gotten very close to being president as claimed in this thread.

From a political standpoint, and cultural, the news coverage today by those like NPR that celebrated the clubbing in defiance aspect, that quickly earned negative points from many listeners. Being fierce, being brave, being bold are all commendable, but in no mainstream mind is the day after a slaughter the time to go out partying as a stand. It simply made us look fruity or frivolous, to the degree that the party circuit is representative. I'm all for letting each to his own, but partying is partying, no matter how many black armbands you're wearing. I have nothing to party about when 103 of my sisters and brothers were shot, half of them murdered. Nothing.

Exactly.

It's a sad statement but often mania and schizophrenia do manifest as delusions of grandeur, auditory hallucinations, paranoia and hyper-religiosity. Only a truly demented person would believe that they were justified by their religious beliefs in using a military assault rifle to kill innocent people.

The evidence is mounting that the killer wasn't devout or observant. Quite the contrary- it seems he had issues and opportunistically was attracted to extremist religiosity to justify his delusions.

Re: Omar Mateen a Pulse regular

This is getting more and more spooky.

Re: Omar Mateen a Pulse regular

Oh man..his dad is definitely part of the problem..and so is his religion which his dad probably turned to shove down his throat if he found out his son was gay....not unlike some Christians who do the same damage to their kids. His dad was the one who probably mocked the guy kissing and tormented his son....

The last 36 hours have been tough. 49 of our brothers and sisters were executed in cold blood at a gay club in Orlando, Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. Many more have been horribly injured, some fighting for their lives.

So many beautiful lives destroyed. So many hopes and dreams that will never be realised. So much unbearable pain for those left behind. So many hearts broken.

I’m struggling to come to terms with what happened. My deep sadness is mixed with anger. Anger at the lawmakers who continue to make LGBT Americans second-class citizens. Anger at the hypocrisy of those same lawmakers as they fill Twitter with promises to "pray" for us. And anger at the NRA whose lobby work means that assault rifles like the one used by the attacker are so easily obtained.

In vigils across the country today, our wonderful, resilient, defiant community will come together in solidarity and love. We will cry. We will sing. We will stand with pride and dignity. Weareorlando.org has been set up as a central place to find out about vigils, organise your own event, or make a donation. Please go there and do what you can.

Here at All Out, we will continue to defy the haters with love, community, and acceptance of all. We will stand against demonizing an entire religion. We will investigate new campaigns with others to finally pass commonsense gun laws.

And – with you – we will work even harder to fight back against bigotry and violence. By doing so we will honor the memory of those we have lost. May they rest in peace.

With love and solidarity,
Matt Beard
Executive Director, All Out

There were a couple of people on here who suggested the same, before the shooter's identity was known.

Orlando gunman had used gay dating app and visited LGBT nightclub on other occasions, witnesses say

The gunman who attacked a Florida LGBT nightclub had attended the club before the attack and had used a gay dating and chat app, witnesses said.

Kevin West, a regular at Pulse nightclub, said Omar Mateen messaged him on and off for a year before the shooting using the gay chat and dating app Jack’d.

But they never met – until early Sunday morning.

West was dropping off a friend at the club when he noticed Mateen – whom he knew by sight but not by name – crossing the street wearing a dark cap and carrying a black cellphone about 1 a.m., an hour before the shooting.

“He walked directly past me. I said, ‘Hey,’ and he turned and said, ‘Hey,’” and nodded his head, West said. “I could tell by the eyes.”

At least four regular customers of Pulse, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender nightclub where the massacre took place, told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that they believed they had seen Mateen there before.

Re: Omar Mateen a Pulse regular

"they stopped speaking to Mateen after he threatened them with a knife, apparently after someone made a joke about religion"

Re: Omar Mateen a Pulse regular

So it appears he was likely Gay and had issues dealing with his orientation, which butted heads with his Father and Islam.

I think the father of the killer is a homophobe and there is more to this tragic story. The NY times and other media outlets like Gawker are running articles suggesting this guy might of been a closeted homosexual or bisexual. Yes Omar Mateen married twice but according to the articles I read he was seen on grindr and Adam4adam. Of course the father denies this I guess for him it is easier to accept his son being a killer but not possibly being gay or bisexual. That would be crazy if he was secretly gay or bisexual but struggling with his sexuality.

Chris Haynes said he will be interviewing one of the multiple people who said he had been to the club at least a dozen times. Of of the DQ even recognized him and one of the guys he interacted with on Jack'd also showed his correspondence with him to the police.

So Mateen went to PULSE often.
How come no one has hooked up with him? He wasn't a bad looking bloke LOL
