Same here. There are limits to party donations, lobby donations (including lobbying itself), and limits to campaign spending. Our ex-MP went to jail a few years ago because he overspent his personal $5,000 limit (by $21,000).
 
I wonder what John Roberts thinks about his "free speech" ruling now....

It's a symptom of something else that has happened in American society. There was something that has been termed "The Greatest Generation"- people who had an interest in public service and in social justice Christian teachings.

That's been replaced by "The Me Generation" and the prosperity gospel Christians. And it's not about Republican vs Democrats. Both parties are addicted to power and it takes money to hold on to power.

They politicians that we're electing aren't motivated by "public good". If they were in it for the public good, they wouldn't be doing things like passing legislation to allow mentally ill people to buy guns (HJ40-passed a year ago today on 15-Feb-2017) or passing legislation to partially repeal the Americans With Disabilities Act (HR620 passed the House today - 15-Feb-2018).

They're all in it for the money- it just so happens that the gun lobby gives more money to the Republican party. The politicians aren't pulling the strings... it's the people with the money who are pulling the strings.

But money doesn't equal votes. It takes ill-informed citizens to go to the voting booths to vote for these guys. We have no one to blame but ourselves- either because we vote for these guileless politicians or because we stay home and don't vote at all.

What he doesn't know is that Florida, like many States in the South, doesn't have a true "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" defense. If the defendant is deemed to understand the difference between right and wrong, he is considered eligible to stand for trial.

It doesn't matter how many voices gave him explicit instructions on how to carry out a military style ambush, he's headed for death row.

Here's one of those ironies- it wasn't John Roberts who was the deciding vote- it was Anthony Kennedy. The case was Citizens United vs FEC.

Citizens United initiated the case because they wanted to run an anti-Hillary Clinton documentary before the election in 2008.

The majority opinion was written by Anthony Kennedy (who was the deciding vote on Obergefell v. Hodges that gave gay people the right to marry).

The lawyer for Citizens United was Ted Olsen (who argued in favor of gay marriage in Hollingsworth v. Perry).

One of the things that Hillary Clinton was advocating in her 2016 campaign was an effort to overturn Citizens United and get to get corporate money out of politics. That didn't go so well.

An NPR story this morning quoted the killer's gun shop as having waited the "five-day waiting period" for his AR-15's purchase, so something does agree here. Either Florida does have a longer period, or perhaps a local ordnance, or maybe just this shop's policy.

Oh yeah...you are right. As time goes along... I automatically put Roberts face there as I dislike him alot...but Kennedy was the guy....

You would play a game whose pawns are the children. Why wouldn't American people even try something ? Try a ban on riffle guns for 5 years and see if the numbers go down. I don't and can't understand fathers and mothers who'd rather nothing changed and let children get killed.

Unfortunately I think more would be inclined to teach their child to use a gun.

You're assuming father and mother have a firm grip on reality especially cause and effect. They want something done, just not taking away their ability to spray bullets in rapid succession. Cuz that's a thing you might need. If there's ever a zombie apocalypse or your penis is really small.
 
I don't think the majority of Americans believe a ban on guns is the solution. I think we believe the restriction of automatic, semi-automatic, and militarized guns, along with high capacity magazines, is the place to start.

People who live in communities where hunting is a way of life do not see a shotgun or a rifle as a threat. They see guns used as rapid fire weapons as needless and pointless. It is only the paranoid militia types who champion their ownership, and they are indeed a minority only bolstered by the NRA's tactics.

And, we do believe there is a mental health crisis, even if all these are not mental health driven necessarily.

Finally, we want accountability for ineptness and indifference from folks like the FBI who ignored the reports on this very killer in the making. This sort of bumbling is all too common. Enough squawking about Homeland Security when these glaring failures stand out. Enough.

Yeah yeah yeah, as always, they are just a minority... so irrelevant that it gets MILLIONS of people all wrought-up against themselves.
 
It appears the FBI was warned early in January about the killer and they failed to do anything. WTF. Heads need to roll for this.
We need to get serious about doing something because in a weeks time this will be old news and just waiting for the next tragedy to strike. The first and easiest step is to ban military weapons from anyone who is not military. The second amendment can still be honored with stricter laws in place.
