Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Dude, post some god damn pics or shut the fuck up, no one is interested here in your crap. If you want to defend anything, go the Religion and Spirituality section. Each time I come here for new posts all I see is your comment on everything.

If you couldn't see the humor of that post, it's no wonder you have such a bitter attitude.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Kulindahr, I think you are credulous about some very silly ideas and it seems obvious to me that you do not train your well-developed everyday powers of observation on your own beliefs. That's my view of your ideas not of you. I'd not bother debating you if I thought I was only talking to myself. Your post here is hoping to catch us in an attack against believers themselves, hoping to find an ad hominem, so that there would be a reason not to contend with the arguments that atheists actually make about your beliefs.

For my own part I am always glad to enter the fray with theists on any question of philosophy. On days when you would celebrate a special occasion within your religion like Christmas or Easter, I might add what I learn from those occasions but I am generally disposed to see theists celebrate those days without comment. Unless of course the celebration (or at least the thread) is used by theists as an occasion to say ridiculous things about atheism. That's not the militant trashing of believers.

This thread is a celebration of a fallacy, the pillorying of straw men. Why, when on other subjects using a straw man argument is pounced on as invalid, does it get celebrated when the topic is religion?

Pictures here that totally misrepresent the truth and/or ridicule something that exists only in the minds of atheists are funny only to the irrational and ignorant. They're the flip side of fundies who insist that atheists all hate God and have no morality -- views I doubt anyone here would just let pass if they were posted as "funny anti-atheist pics". And they're also common fuel for atheists who get on the internet in Christian or other religious fora for no reason other than to attack believers.

I'm sure bankside and Kulindahr might have some opinion about this

If you do, can you put it on the religion forum, please?

Superb illustration of how atheists love the straw man argument!

So many atheists pride themselves on rationality -- but when it comes to attacking religion, they embrace straw men and admire themselves for it.

Superb.

In many cases (though the farips might not apply to your specific faith) they are exactly on point.

There are many christians, for example, for whom faith is a gullible, dishonest absence of reason.

Perhaps making generalizations is a two-way street.

Sadly, it's fairly common. I've never understood it, though; I can't conceive of believing anything without at least some evidence. But then I was brought up to proceed from the premise that if a lot of people believe something, it's suspect unless they can at least show that it's not unreasonable (kind of an extension of the "If everyone was jumping off a bridge, would you?" thing that parents use).

It's one of the reasons that a theologian I admire once conceded that he doubted more than one professing Christian in ten actually was a Christian, that the rest had only fooled themselves into thinking they were -- and that was regarding sound, orthodox congregations.

So I ought to remind myself that the public image of believers is not an attractive one. That ought to be easier from now on, since I've been nominated a moderator for a forum that consists a good four-fifths of young earth creationists arguing with evolutionists of all stripes. In fact that's one reason I laughed so hard at Hooded's line above -- it's so exactly like what one of them says any time she's in a corner. (OTOH, there are a pair there who make the most irrational statements here by atheists look erudite and reasoned.) I debate with myself which is better: that frank "I'll believe anything I can attribute to God", or the one who strives determinedly to respond to EVERYTHING with a list of Bible verses; the latter is at least trying to engage.

But there is no hidden liberal struggling to escape from within the killers of the Islamic State and Boko Haram, any more than there was in the torturers who served the Pol Pot regime. To be sure, these are extreme cases. But in the larger sweep of history, faith-based violence and persecution, secular and religious, are hardly uncommon – and they have been widely supported. It is peaceful coexistence and the practice of toleration that are exceptional.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Roughly speaking, an atheist is anyone who has no use for the concept of God – the idea of a divine mind, which has created humankind and embodies in a perfect form the values that human beings cherish and strive to realise. Many who are atheists in this sense (including myself) regard the evangelical atheism that has emerged over the past few decades with bemusement. Why make a fuss over an idea that has no sense for you?

For some, it's the gall in which those religious political elite are imposing their brand of religious extremism upon others. As most folks here are homosexual, or not 'straight', why should narrow christian or islamic or some religious extremist dogma be lorded over everyone? When you take your irrational belief system and bash everyone else with it, then there is going to be a reaction against it.
