I've been on this blog and read comment boards for other gay-issues websites for a couple of years now. I live in the Deep South, and I am cognizant of the nature of conservative thought and the fallacy in their "Gospel-rooted" logic. But the blatant inconsistencies between Jesus' message and conservative politics are another issue entirely.
My question is this. Are some gays just as bad as the gay haters? Some people's posts on here astound me. If anybody says anything remotely positive about a conservative/Republican or posts a story about one trying to extend an olive branch some members totally demonize the politician usually without even bothering to read the article. I think there are a lot of younger and middle-aged conservatives/Republicans that are either "in favor of" or "not opposed to" gay marriage. But if we aren't willing to even listen to what they have to say could we miss our chance to reach out and show a straight person we're just a normal human being like they are?? We'll just be seen as some crazy, irrational, gay jackass.
Recently Chris Colfer (of Glee fame, need I even say) was interviewed by Piers Morgan. He said he has met several Republican politicians and he often knows that they voted against gay marriage, or DADT, etc. But they always want to take a picture with Chris and talk about what a great influence he is. Chris could tell them to shove their picture and fuck off, but he said he always takes a picture with them because maybe they'll take something from the experience. I took it as a "kill them with kindness" approach, as we would call it in the South.
I guess what I advocate is more of a non-violent, non-hate approach to equality. I believe we should clearly assert our goals and actively find ways to attain equal rights, but I don't believe we will do it by being haters like some Republicans are. When we put ourselves on their level, we become no better than the gay bashers we so vehemently dislike.
