I've been on this blog and read comment boards for other gay-issues websites for a couple of years now. I live in the Deep South, and I am cognizant of the nature of conservative thought and the fallacy in their "Gospel-rooted" logic. But the blatant inconsistencies between Jesus' message and conservative politics are another issue entirely.

My question is this. Are some gays just as bad as the gay haters? Some people's posts on here astound me. If anybody says anything remotely positive about a conservative/Republican or posts a story about one trying to extend an olive branch some members totally demonize the politician usually without even bothering to read the article. I think there are a lot of younger and middle-aged conservatives/Republicans that are either "in favor of" or "not opposed to" gay marriage. But if we aren't willing to even listen to what they have to say could we miss our chance to reach out and show a straight person we're just a normal human being like they are?? We'll just be seen as some crazy, irrational, gay jackass.

Recently Chris Colfer (of Glee fame, need I even say) was interviewed by Piers Morgan. He said he has met several Republican politicians and he often knows that they voted against gay marriage, or DADT, etc. But they always want to take a picture with Chris and talk about what a great influence he is. Chris could tell them to shove their picture and fuck off, but he said he always takes a picture with them because maybe they'll take something from the experience. I took it as a "kill them with kindness" approach, as we would call it in the South.

I guess what I advocate is more of a non-violent, non-hate approach to equality. I believe we should clearly assert our goals and actively find ways to attain equal rights, but I don't believe we will do it by being haters like some Republicans are. When we put ourselves on their level, we become no better than the gay bashers we so vehemently dislike.

To some extent, like the Chris Colfer example, it tells me that a lot of Republican leaders could care less about who is gay or not BUT in order to appease their base and/or keep their position in the party, they have to do what their base expects. Also, Chris is a young actor and the last thing he wants is to come off as a douche, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I know all Republicans are not gay haters, I live in South Ga and I can count the number of times I been called gay/queer/etc to my face on one hand, except at PRIDE and a lot co-workers, who I consider friends and have known for over a decade, treat me no differently than any of their other friends. The gay issue, IMO, is all political, but there are times when a politician says gays mentally ill, sick or abnormal because we're gay, well you can just kiss the crack my ass because after that, I could give a fuck about anything else you have to say. This is one of those occasions where I throw the baby out with the bathwater. I hope I put enough southern sayings in there for you, lol.

Amen. Wow, Sweetwater, you are so, like, my new best friend! :)

That's what I've been saying around here too. Instead of building walls, we need to be tearing them down & building bridges.

What state, or part of the deep South are you from?

I chatted with a gay guy from Birmingham, Ala. about a year ago. He was extremely closeted, and really active with his Southern Baptist Church. I don't think he's going to come out for a while.

I got the sense that, even for a relatively big city in Alabama, it's extremely socially conservative & very religious over there. And that most gay people are closeted, even in a relatively big city like Birmingham.

As we get near a tipping point, this becomes even more important.

If nothing else, it will make independents sit up and take notice as they see that gays are being more Christian than the self-proclaimed advocates for Jesus. That always makes people re-evaluate (it sure did when I was in high school, helping fight the dress code, which the administration claimed was necessary because we kids didn't know how to dress appropriately for various occasions -- but at the school board meeting, all our student speakers were in good formal garb perfectly fine for a corporate business meeting, while the administration people showed up in casual clothes... we'd won the moment our first speaker stood up and peoples eyes went from one set of representatives to the other).

As with Ghandi's fight, this is to a large extent about civilization. The contention of one side is that if we are allowed to flourish, civilization is doomed. The best argument we can make against that is to be more civilized than they are -- admittedly not hard, if you look at the extreme examples, but what has to be aimed for is the overall impression. When people think of Republicans, a great many have the image of respectable business folks; when they think of gays, what image comes to mind? We need it to be at least as respectable as those businessmen -- and far, far, far more respectable than Bachman and others.

Another way to put it is that we have to look like the grownups, so that people see that if anyone is a threat to civilization, it's the reactionary theocrats, not those merely wanting what the Founding Fathers expounded.

Over the next year, we're going to see a flood of threads and posts trying to convince the homos that the Republicans and conservatives really do love them and that the liberals and Democrats have done nothing for them.

It was the same in 2007.

But at the same time, in the most cynical and breathtaking display of hypocrisy possible, the conservatives/Republicans candidates will openly and unflinchingly do whatever they can to block even the most basic civil rights advances for homos in order to play to the evangelical base.

Homos are used by everyone as a wedge issue in politics. Or as distraction from dealing with real issues of concern, like the destruction of the middle class, opportunistic militarism, etc. Have been for a few decades now.

Most people do take a pacifist approach to gaining equality.

Most moderate, mainstream religion republicans probably don't have a huge problem with DADT or DOMA repeal. They are not the people who come in for some lumps here. Far from it.

And if we were all saints, we'd all just turn the other cheek. Some days we all like to feel morally superior because we took the high road and have demonstrated by our example that we are fit to live among the hetero-sexuals.

Probably many of us who piss away our time here live as open and out members in our communities. There are likely just as many who live a closeted existence.

One of the reasons why many homos can be out and proud is because of the big, big noise made by the pioneers back in the 70's, who pushed back against structural inequality and risked arrest, ruin and having the shit beat out of them by bashers and the police.

So pardon me if I piss all over the representatives of any party or movement whose stated objective is to push homos back into hiding....quite literally fearful for their safety and lives.

Oh. And by the way, It is always amusing when fags who wrap themselves in the American flag start spouting about behaving politely and not making waves in order to effect change.

How was it again that the Americans forged their own nation?

You cannot negotiate with people that think you have no right to exist.

Go ask Israel how well thats doing for them.

The GOP is dedicated to destroying my marriage and my civil rights.

lets cut the crap.. the GOP has used kicking gays as a means to get people to the polls for their other BS agenda, and when they stop kicking us, we will stop fighting back.

I am all for dialogue and compromise, but you first have to start with agreeing that both sides have a valid place at the table.

The GOP does not think that the gay community does, and it is not interesting in any kindness we may extend to them.

Civility is a tool for those who's minds which can be directly or indirectly influenced. Force, on the other hand, is a tool which should never be withheld then the time is right.

I can live my life today as a young gay male who's out and proud only due to the blood, sweat, and tears of the previous generations. As the fight for full legal equality moves into its last decades we must never relent in this struggle, and if a few eggs still need cracking then so be it.

Exactly! I'm all for building the bridges, but the other side of the raging river will have to grab the rope.

I'm against gay bashing. However some gay men forget that they're men and when you remind them of this, it's called gay bashing.

You should have been here during the last presidential election. It was PMS-Central in here. Some gay men were enamored that a woman was this close to running the country. So in love were they with the idea, they overlooked Hillary's race and gender baiting. Obama was nothing but nice to Hillary and they still had a grudge with him.

Mystikwizard (spelling?), a sporadic poster in this forum, always talked about how pathetic the gay men (not all) here acted when it came to Hillary. I once called Hillary a bitch (which is a gender neutral term) and one older person started talking about Obama eating watermelon. That racist attitude was right beneath the surface for this Shrillary supporter.

bitch is not a gender neutral term...lmao!!!

Definition of BITCH

1
: the female of the dog or some other carnivorous mammals
2
a : a lewd or immoral woman
b : a malicious, spiteful, or overbearing woman —sometimes used as a generalized term of abuse

I don't know the history of which yo speak, LL, but that is something that you need to understand.

Is english your primary spoken language? this is a serious question, because often I get the impression you don;t really grasp what some of the words in the english language mean.

You've never called a man a bitch before? To people under 30, a bitch can be a man or woman. Trust me on that.

And you've never heard a female call a professor or another male a "dick"? I have and I've never taken offense. I've probably even agreed.

I'm sorry; I am not obliged to demonstrate even the slightest iota of civility or respect to someone or any group of someones that believes I am less than human. The fact that republican candidates who base much of their campaigns on fomenting tribal hostilities towards homosexuals because they know that kind of prejudicial pandering gets their base all fired up hang around and get all pally with prominent gay actors simply demonstrates their overwhelming hypocrisy. When the Republicans start reigning in their frothing at the bit, anti-intellectual, fundamentalist, biblically literal, evolution denying, homophobic, tribal, education hating lunatic fringe rather than promoting them as potential presidential candidates, then maybe there'll be a place for talk. As it is, the party has time and time again demonstrated it will happily take the votes and financial support of self loathing homosexuals whilst simultaneously hurling them under the bus (or, more accurately, sacrificing them on the altar) in order to appease the paranoid, semi-literate, inbred fucktards they currently seem intent on pandering to.

John Edwards is on CNN now. BP, do you believe for a second that there would be a problem if I called him a dick?

Of course not. And the word "dick", like the word "bitch", is just like calling someone an asshole. It's that simple. Except being called a bitch isn't just limited to females anymore. I've never heard a woman being a "dick." Have you?

As with Ghandi's fight, this is to a large extent about civilization.

Minor correction -- Mahatma Gandhi's name is spelled "G-A-N-D-H-I" by Indians. The way you spelled it was the old British spelling.

oh so its because I am an old fart now?

LMAO!!

A bitch is a female dog, and when you call a man that you are emasculating him. Thats the point of the insult.

I didn't call you an old fart.

So, you have heard of a man being called a bitch. Just a second ago... Nevermind.
