Gay marriage in Argentina

I was going to translate some, but my internet connection (I'm picking up someone else's wireless) is so stinking slow I've been waiting ten minutes and the site isn't even loaded yet!

Well, at least I have a connection.....

This is a promising sign:

"There was a question earlier yesterday as to whether quorum would be reached for a vote. Proponents of the marriage equality bill also promised they would not bring the bill up for debate unless they had secured enough votes for passage of the bill. Apparently they did secure the votes because this afternoon quorum was reached and the Senate has gone into marriage equality debate mode since then."

^^^I guess a lot of the supposed No votes wound up abstaining after all!

Either way great news!!!

Next up, Luxeomburg, where a same sex marriage law is expected to be introduced this month. Slovenia will also likely pass it by the end of the year.

Congratulations Argentina on becoming country number 10! :=D:

I must admit I am VERY glad to live in a country that has legalized gay marriage (and I have been legally married now for over a year), but deeply saddened by the fact that my birth country (the USA) is still fighting it so hard. Opponents don't seem to realize that legislation like this doesn't take any rights AWAY from anyone, so what's their problem if it doesn't affect them personally? Oh well - there are 10 countries that legalize it now, and none of those countries have gone completely to hell and - as a matter of fact - they are all some of the most well-developed and prosperous nations on earth... It's just a matter of time, hopefully!

So let's keep the ball rolling, Luxembourg and Slovenia! And our neighbors in Denmark just need to wake up a little bit... :D

"What a victory! We won by a pretty slim margin"

No as slim as I expected though. I thought it would be 33 to 32.

I was in such a foul mood today but this has lifted my spirits completely. That and I ate.

Congratulations Argentina! Justice is served.

It was really funny towards the end right before the vote, one of the female senators started throwing a huge fit and screaming about how much she didn't want this, and then...she started crying.

Yes she was crying because the government was no longer going to enforce her religious ideology.

too bad so sad

Reflecting on this, I got to thinking how weird it is that in a country which was founded with the concept of sovereign liberty for every individual as a foundation, we have had to fight over and over in our history for obvious individual rights -- yet a country that has a history of authoritarian regimes can advance liberty ahead of us.

Argentina, you shame us.

Indeed.

Especially since American gays were so supportive vocally and with money and votes to elect a President who claimed to be our fierce advocate and campaigned on repealing DOMA and DADT.

We look very foolish today.

But still, yay for Argentina.

Argentina! [construct raises an eyebrow and purses his lips.] We're being surpassed by ARGENTINA? Iceland, sure. Canada, not surprising. South Africa, they were on a role. Argentina! Okay, folks. We've got to get on the ball.

That's right. We supported the only choice that was actually going to make things better for gay people, unlike some others.

As mentioned earlier by Jockboy, hopefully this will push other South American nations to do the same. Apparently that may already be happening:

I also know that when the new President of Uruguay was elected he said he would legalize same sex marriage. As of yet, nothing has happened, but hopefully what's happened now will push them to do it.
