Gay marriage in Argentina

the republicans in america will only compare them to communists and such, and dismiss this as immoral. They will throw in a Chavez and raise it with a Peron.

As much as I would like to think this will shame the republicans in america into realizing we are falling behind our south american neighbors, I doubt they will feel that way.

Globally it is great progress.

A lot of people really think their religious views are the greatest thing in the World and that everyone should be forced to follow them. It's quite egotistical.

Particularly dangerous is when people in a position of power are allowed to abuse it to enforce their religion on others.

The silly thing about it is that only Islam asserts that everyone should be required to follow it. Jesus said basically to invite everyone, but not to force anyone -- yet the most virulent theocrats in this country claim to be Christian.

They are not: they are Old Testament imperialists with a veneer of Jesus-talk.

Especially since American gays were so supportive vocally and with money and votes to elect a President who claimed to be our fierce advocate and campaigned on repealing DOMA and DADT.

We look very foolish today.



But still, yay for Argentina.

They want to live in a World where some people do not have equal rights.

They tend to conceive of themselves as the Holy People and everyone else as Hittites or Jebusites, whom they are supposed to "smite" and put under "God's rule". They claim to have love, but their image of how they are to behave is marching around Jericho and having the walls fall down -- neglecting the fact that most of the inhabitants of that city were "slain" in that event.

It is a matter for praise of the Catholics in Argentina that many of them at least heed the Pope's and Catechism's call for tolerance of gays instead of persecution. It's sad that the bishop's conference in the U.S. could not follow their example and issue a statement in support of marriage equality.


BTW, the Courage Campaign is going to be tracking NOM's tour for "traditional marriage" this summer. I asked them to please post the itinerary as they know it, so those of us who feel so inclined can go express ourselves at those events. My intent, if I can reach one, is to go with Greek New Testament in hand, see if I can get on stage, and tell them I have the most important statement by Jesus on the issue, then read it in Greek and translate: "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's". If they let me finish, I'll tell them that rendering to Caesar means yielding to the Constitution which according to St. Paul was given by God, and which says that all are created equal -- and thus they should remain silent on Caesar's marriage, and keep to themselves with God's, thus not casting pearls before swine.

It would be a miracle if any of them listen, but it's worth a try. If nothing else, it should make the evening news.

Paraguay to consider same sex marriage next. If they get it (and actually, when it begins in Nepal), that will be a sign that the US has REALLY fallen behind.

Well, if the US representatives are being pushed to pass a bill from their very own States and from other countries, they will eventually start considering a debate, at least.

I still don't understand why the so called most democratic country is so hypocritical. And I know this sounds harsh, but I really love the United States (I've studied there), and I don't understand why people from the Government are so desperate to take democracy to other countries in the opposite corner of the world and they don't pay attention to the lack of justice in the US. Gay people shouldn't be beging to be given basic rights in one of the most developed countries in the world.

I can blame them for failing to hold Obama's feet to the fire as early as when he didn't even ask his supporters at his rallies to support our position on Prop 8 in California. And our "fierce advocate's" reluctance to advocate for us hasn't changed while most gays still protect and defend Obama. Despite coming into office with the wind at his back and a supermajority Dem Congress, DADT and DOMA remain unrepealed and ENDA is still not law.

It's great that those countries started the discussion after the bill was passed in Argentina. These three are simmilar countries, with simmilar cultures. Well, I honestly didn't expect that from Colombia. Uruguay and Argentina are extremely simmilar, so it's no surprise.

I bet Chile and Brazil will follow soon.

Not possible with the current Congress, irrespective of anything Obama could do or not do.

Feel free to come back to reality when you realize that Obama was the only choice in the 2008 general election that would have led to increasing rights for gays and is doing so.

^^^A Civil Unions bill passed the Venezuelan Parliment last year in the first reading (along with a bill outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity). It will be voted on again sometime this year. Chavez has expressed support for both.
